Alison Jade I caught a gay friend of mine in high school speaking to himself when he thought no one was around. He was speaking in a normal voice!!! He usually spoke in a gay voice! I think a lot of guys force themselves into talking with a fem voice because that’s what they think they should sound like. After awhile, it starts to become their actual voice.

I’m gay and there is, without question, a “gay voice”. You can hear it in many languages. I don’t know why, but it exists. I’m not a particularly masculine or feminine gay man, just kinda average. I have an average voice, but I hear that “gay voice” come out here and there and it’s so awkward because I’m not choosing to sound a certain way. I can’t explain it and it’s honestly a phenomenon I’m quite interested in. But what’s weirder is “gay face”. A good amount of gay men have particular facial features my sister and I call gay face. It’s so odd and interesting.

There was also a friend whom I thought was only feminine due to lack of guy friends but was actually a gay. But gay friends are wonderful to be with.

It's an ACCENT, and just like any accent, if you are around enough people who speak in the same accent, you eventually will pick it up and speak that way yourself. If you take a New Yorker and move him down to Mississippi, over time (years), he WILL pick up on many of the speech patterns, accent, and mannerisms of the locals. He may never fully sound like a local, but if he stays there long enough and goes back to NY his friends will no doubt make fun of him saying he sounds "Southern". Same with anyone who relocates to another region - you really can't avoid it. So if someone is around a lot of should we say, "stereotypically gay sounding" men, that guy WILL, over time, pick up on the accent. I've actually seen this happen. I've known two men who came out late in life (mid-30s, at least) and finally accepted themselves as gay. They were "masculine" sounding at the time, but in both of these circumstances, they decided to submerge themselves in a very predominately gay area where people are known to be more of the rainbow flag waving variety. Ran into them years later and they were very, I guess you'd say, "gay sounding and acting" (in a stereotypical way) because they surrounded themselves with that segment of the population - like any accent and mannerisms, it became a part of them too over time. On the flip side, I've known several very masculine gay men who tended to have circle of friends who were also very masculine gay men, and those men never developed the "gay voice". Just to repeat - imo - it's an accent like any other. Be around it enough, then like anyone around any other accent enough, you pick it up.

I think the "gay accent" is basically either an effeminate voice or more typically an androgynous, which means having characteristics of both a man and a woman. The host of this program has more of an androgynous voice. If you close your eyes and really focus on his voice, you can definitely tell it's a man speaking. But along with those male qualities, there are also distinct feminine qualities in the voice as well. The sharpened "s" on extra is one point where an effeminate touch was added; the last word "gay" elongated into "gehhh" was another effeminate touch.

Part of the “gay voice” is the uptalk feature, where the inflection of a question is used at the end of declarative or imperative statements. It’s something that is otherwise used almost exclusively by women; this would help contribute to the gay voice’s “feminine” reputation

Maybe it's the intonation? I mean, men on average sound a lot more monotonic in their way of expressing things than women on average? Maybe you talk very non-monotonic? Or maybe it's more the tone of your voice a bit? I know people who sound quite gay-ish in their tone of voice, without it being high pitched. Similarly there are guys who have high pitched voices but do not sound feminine. All in all, I actually think the pitch of the voice (higher or lower) is not the only thing that makes a voice sound feminine or not...It seems to be something else in the sound of the voice that makes it sound masculine or feminine

It's not a pitch of voice like high or low it's pronouncing of words and specifically certain emphasis on syllables or consonants. When I was young teen/pre-teen was way more prevalent, id get made fun of putting extra flamboyant sounding emphasis after words lol "NO(uh) EWWW(uh)". People says gay men "lisp" but too me a lisp is where you have "TH" sound instead of "S" and I definitely don't do that...but it's a softer "s" . Not sure what brings it on I had no examples of it growing up or in school to pick it up from but yes I definitely have the common "accent".

Too many people are just too judgemental. I went years in the closet (and in denial) and literally, only a couple of people even guessed that I might have been gay. However, there are a lot of stereotypes that do fit some gay people, but they can also fit straight people. For me, those who guessed, probably assumed I was gay because I loved looking and smelling nice and would spend about as much time on my hair as the average woman. To top it off, I was single for a very long time (still am) and apparently oblivious to advances from the ladies. I only realized this when several of my female friends started pointing them out to me. Do I sound gay? No. I have a deep thunderous voice. Do I dress gay? Not that I'm aware of. I have no fashion-sense and just wear whatever I feel like wearing. Do I act gay? Maybe a little. I am a "little" more feminine than the average heterosexual guy, but there are a lot of straight men who are just as feminine. The only way to know for sure if someone is gay is to ASK them. Too bad so many straight guys get so bent out of shape when a gay man asks them if they're gay. Get over yourselves, it's not exactly easy to tell if someone is gay unless you ask. If you aren't, just say so and I'll move along.

1:24 Even more and, he's got the "gay face expression" (head tilt) and the "nasal talk", particular to the "gay voice". The guy you are referring to also has the voice but it's less pronounced and, he's got the "India" way of speaking. That's another speech pattern. I'm also really curious as to why people from India all speak the same way. **I'm not judging anyone here, I'm just really curious about all the speech patterns. And language is just a way to communicate. One last thing, I speak French, "Quebec french" (It's very particular and difficult to imitate. Most actors who have coaches to learn the Quebec accent never come 10% close to being accurate altough them can "imitate" any imaginable accent and they are amazing at it) Anyway, my mother's first language is English and my father's first language is French. I'm bilingual but I went to french school. I heard a friend of mine talk in English in an interview (she's been living in an English province for 20 years now, she's originally from Quebec and didn't speak a word of English.) She has an accent in English. Although I only listened to English tv all my life, I only started speaking English in front of others, because I was shy, around 18 years old. Well, I also have an accent. The "Quebec speaking in English accent" that is very different from the "France speaking in English accent" And, when I heard my friend talk, although my accent is not as pronounced as hers, I could hear myself speaking English. Something for sure is that her English accent or mine are not comparable to someone who can speak the language but doesn't speak it/practice it everyday. Language and accents really fascinate me.

There is now a "gay voice." Where it comes from, I don't know. A quarter century ago, when I started going to gay bars, everyone sounded "normal." You'd have never been able to guess, based on their voices, that they were gay. Now pretty much all I see in bars are frail young men flitting to and fro, snapping their fingers, and saying in the highest, most nasal voice possible things like, "You go, girl (or bitch)." It seems to me to be an affectation popular in the subculture, not something intrinsic to being gay. Or maybe its the hormones in the chickens nowaday :). Who knows?

I think sometimes people imitate images of themselves in the media which are already an exaggerated stereotype to begin with it's true for a lot of minority groups. Growing up we didn't have gay/straight alliance club in high school and bullying was just a part of life. I think now people sometimes equate being free to express themselves with "giving shows" in public places regardless of the location with the comfort that they can call anyone who doesn't want to experience their public display homophobic. I think gay people should be able to hold hands and kiss in public etc. but not to be loud, flamboyant and obnoxious as if being gay gives them a free pass to disturb the peace.

LMFAO! Yea, in my case, I don't use all the feminine mannerisms and language but people are often still able to tell which leaves me frustrated because I like to be thought of as masculine. They say they are able to tell in my voice. I'm one of those people who think I sound straight and relatively masculine or gender neutral at least to myself, but everyone can always tell and they often tell me it's because of my voice. And people at fast food restaurants voice boxes and over the phone who don't know me often assume I am a girl before seeing. It's very frustrating. My ex-boyfriend used to tell me it's when I am talking to strangers and I'm uber friendly that it comes out. When I am not talking to strangers and being uber polite, he said he doesn't see it as much. I asked another friend of mine how she knew and she noted that I am super bubbly in conversation with her. I suppose it's a not a very masculine trait to be very bubbly polite in conversation. When listening to my voice as a kid, I will admit I thought I sounded masculine up until I listened to the way I pronounced my t's. My t was very sharp and embarrassing to listen to on camera. But I haven't heard myself in recently except for my Judge Judy animated cartoon as my KZread channel and I always think I sound masculine there.

I've read some about it, because I've wondered the same thing. Some people say its stereotypical but it's a pattern. Gay people have adapted higher pitches, feminine. I would say not all gay people have higher pitches but there was a study about 25 men speaking and 16 if then were gay based off their voice. People are still studying why gay men do this. Seems like it's just one sided, because gay females don't take on more Masculine tones

I couldn't talk in that high pitched voice if I tried. My natural speaking voice sounds like a straight person. Though Jim Nabors aka Gomer Pyle sounded gay, his singing voice sounded straight. I was always amazed at how he had a gay speaking voice, but a straight sounding singing voice.

It's always been a puzzlement to me - for years, I trained myself to talk in a certain manner and not to 'accent' my words the way a female would. I'm not saying that is what anyone else should do, but I'm sure there are actors out there who learned how to augment and modify their speaking voices through the years.

I would personally say it does, but more so for feminine guys and butch girls, though not all. I'm gay teen and after puberty I noticed I had it, it's so annoying I wish I knew how to get rid of it, and my walk I walk like a female supermodel I'm told, and I can't help it. I wish I could wear like a correction brace for it. I'm worried a group of homophobic guys will see me one day and beat me up. But anyway I see a lot of the butch lesbians in my school have a deeper manlier voice, and this one gay kid has the gay voice to the extreme, and I've met a few other gays that had it, but the masculine ones always sound like a normal straight guy. Idk if it's hormones or subconscious behavior. I read a youtube comment of a dentist who said that when she put her gay patient under morphine and they came back after the operation they sounded normal, but within 5-10 minutes of regaining consciousness, they began to slowly develope the "gay voice" again. She said she believed it was a subconscious behavior to show other gays "hey I'm gay wanna go out?" I think it makes sense since my younger brother is actually gay too, and after he came out to our oldest brother my oldest brother told me he started developing a gay voice. I always noticed it after he hit puberty though.

The "gay voice" is very clearly a matter of cognitive bias and subcultural conformity. What happens is that people will take on characteristics and forms of expression based on how they think (or want) others perceive them (sort of a manifestation of labeling theory). Sometimes it even starts as a joke then over time comes to dominate their personality. That's not to say that it's a choice, it's more just a matter of long-term conditioning. You can't really just change it on a whim. One of my biggest pet peeves is when gay guys who conform to these stereotyped behaviors accuse those who don't of being self-loathers. Sometimes it's about repression, but I think more often it just shows that someone is simply well-adjusted and socially versatile. While it's definitely a sweeping generalization, I tend to think of over-the-top gays as being sort of insipid - they're typically the "enclave" type that go to clubs all the time and only hang out with other gays like them or girls that encourage that behavior. There was a study a while back that concluded that gay stereotype behavior is more closely related to childhood gender non-conformity than it is to actual sexual orientation. While there is a correlation between the two, it is nowhere near absolute. The consequence is that a fairly robust number of gays exhibit very little or even no social clues that they are in fact gay. Over time, the percentage of gays like this is likely to grow as the radicalized behavior can easily be linked to their degree of marginalization by mainstream society.

Thing is it has a lot to do with the "lingo" often a lot of us in the LGBT community have certain words that are often associated with gay people like " GUUUUURRRRRREELLLLL" "OUUUUOOKAAAAAYYY" "YASSSSS" "HUNTY WERK FEIRCE" are a few and so with that being such common lingo said between gay men it's hard to not assume that someone who talks like that IS gay but idk that's just my opinion

Yes, to a certain extend imo to varying degrees depending on the individuals. Some guys seem completely unnaffected though.

This is a very important question, but asking a lot of uninformed people who never really thought about the issue is unhelpful.

I find the "gay voice" cute, and attractive. my friend has that voice but he isnt gay, I find any male voice that sounds a bit feminine attractive but I am not attracted to men at all.

Some gays have a "gay voice", but not all of them. I feel like the reason gay guys have a more feminine voice is because they hang around females more.

I mean I literally was stuck throughout my Primary years with mainly females and, as a Straight Male, I have not got that accent. Could be something to do with it though.

I think gay intonation exists..there's definitely a lot of curvature to their pitch, like they're gonna break out with a song and dance.. A lot if black women have the same thing. I dont know what causes both. I think it's because they are bothering very expressive.

There is definitely a gay voice. I grew up with several close gay friends and they would practice it. It’s a way of putting it out there without saying it.

Two guys said when asked by the guy with the mic whether he sounds gay, they each said, “No, you sound like a guy.” WTF? Are gay men not men to these dudes? Do they believe gay men are some other middle gender? Wow, I’m straight and never heard any of my other straight friends say that…

Yes. Leslie Jordan had it. Rock Hudson didn't. It's also accompanied by certain mannerisms (feminine walk, lots of hand gestures when they talk etc)

I have been accused of sounding gay for 60 years yet I don't hear it. I do not have a lisp. Yes, my voice is high pitched but not as high as mike tyson. I do not use gay catch phrases. I have asked many people what specifically make a man sound gay. No one can answer that satisfactorily for me. How can I change my voice if there is no actual definition or description? Believe me, I have spent decades trying.

Why can't a place like that exist around here? Finding gay men around here seems like trying to find that one shirt at a store you are willing to buy. You know it's probably there, but it takes so long that sometimes you just get tired of looking for it. Then bam, there it is, but too bad someone else is wearing it. :-(
