Does Attack on Titan Glorify or Condemn War? (Final Season Analysis)

Фильм және анимация

Attack on Titan Season 4, also known as The Final Season, is the show's most violent season yet, but does it glorify or condemn war? In this Attack on Titan analysis, I explore Shingeki no Kyojin's final season and how MAPPA sometimes has a disconnect between the moral stance of the show and epicness of the animation.

I am so impressed by the script of this video! Heroism and anguish are two themes that are common in war stories. A lot of war movies that glorify war also show the darkness of it, while stories that condemn war often show that members of the warring parties have depth and aren’t bad people. I think a war story that focuses on just one aspect while ignoring the other side of the equation is disingenuous/unrealistic. Regardless of your ideology, there are always nuances that need to be addressed. Which, based on your video, it seems Attack on Titan does a good job of this.

Thank you very much, Waifu Theory! Attack on Titan is definitely a nuanced show/manga. At the start, it seems like more of a generic action show than something complex, but it keeps getting better over time. The characters change from the "good guys and bad guys" to characters who all have really fleshed out motivations for why they partake in both the heroic and horrific acts they do.

It is heartbreaking. A lot of AOT is. You are correct about the animation is off the chart.

Yeah, the show just gets more and more emotional - and more intense in the animation department - over time.

Okay so I stopped watching AoT a long time ago but this was really interesting! Like to the point I may consider picking the anime up again.

I don't think you get it, buddy. Attack on Titan used to be a show against war and violence, with a realistic take, never did our loved (heroes) ever go to war and come back without paying a terrible price, in life and we felt it through the characters we know and love loosing limbs family members and dying themselves. after the formation of the squad/Eren activating the rumbling all writing quality in this show went south and not a single episode is worth watching. suddenly we get superhero movie quality writing where no named character ever dies no matter the risk. Mikasa, Jan, Connie even Gabby and Riner's mom all live with plot armor and glorified stupid action scenes where war is a nice trip with no load. you can make a character talk about betrayal and doing terrible things and guilt or state that 80% of the population is killed, but as long as all named characters are fine it means nothing. war after the squad is a fun activity with no bad consequences what so ever.
