02:29 - Does anyone actually want electronic shifting? Seems like just another thing to go wrong when the power runs out?…
09:03 - What is the maximum height I can drop using a trail bike with 120mm suspension without breaking it?
10:46 - Any bikes better specced than the Decathlon Stylus AM 29” Under $4K?
12:17 - Bosch software prevents the owner from de-restriction? Does that include aftermarket dongles?

Limiter definitely needs to be upped. I would gladly sign a petition to raise it. 25kph is too low.

I do!! Im absolutely tired of faffing with cable adjustment, ghost shifting and all that mess. With AXS just install, no cables, adjust the B tension with the tool, and you are done. If something is off, you can microadjust on the trail easily

I have 2 mtn bikes, one AXS, one cable. The shifting performance is different but just that, different. Personally I like the AXS shifting much better, brush the button and you are done. I plan to convert my cable bike to AXS because I like the simplicity. No cable, no lubing, no internal cable routing hassle, no frayed wires and so on. Battery? I have been riding AXS for 2.5 years. I may have charged the battery 4 times. I ride 30-40 miles a week in the mountains with lots of shifting involved. The big drawback of AXS is $$. Initial purchase and rack it on a rock. The derailleur is tough. I hit a rock that sheared my derailleur locater pin. New pin and I was good to go. Tough.

💯 30 km limiter instead of 20km, please start the campaign. It’s so annoying when I hit the limiter. I can pedal faster than 20km on a push bike, so it should be equivalent. The experience when the motor cuts out at the limiter mid trail descent is dreadful.

30km/h limiter would certainly be great. You would no longer slow down cars while driving in 30 zones which they'd probably geeatly appreciate too, and what gives at those 5km/h. Instead of classifying them as S-Pedelec or motorbike due to speed, they should simply be classified by wattage and cadence and still not require a license.

In addition, a non-ebike drives on tarmac road easy above 30. So what’s the problem. On technical trails I personaly think 25 is enough.

Road Bikes and analogue Mountain bike often go over 25km but that is mainly achieved by fit regular cyclists and bikes are half the weight which we have to consider for other countryside users. Emtbs are fantastic at giving people to opportunity to ride that normal mtb doesn’t. However they also get people to speeds and places that their fitness/skill level doesn’t deserve for their own safety let alone others safety!

No question that electronic shifting cleans up those 'unsightly' cables, but does the appearance of sleekness outweigh what we are giving up? Mountain bikes are designed for outdoors use in rough terrain - a location that practically begs for easy-to-service parts when you have a malfunction. In contrast, electronics are on-or-off affair; when they fail, you first check the batteries then scratch your head! So e-shifting is more likely to leave you stuck up a creek without a paddle. Other more touchy issue is the 'right-to-repair' the things you buy. Cables are repairable outside or at home with fairly inexpensive tools. Electronic modules not so at all. Perhaps electronics are better suited to fussy roadies worried about the weight of their hair and micro-seconds of time more so than the rough 'n' tumble MTB community

I put a archer D1X electronic shifter on my Levo SL. I still have the NX eagle cassette and derailleur, but can easily change to a wide range X10 cassette without changing deraillers. It has also transformed the shifting from my least favorite feature on the bike (all my other bikes have shimano groupsets) to effortless and reliable shifting. I also purchased an extra battery set which I carry on my bike drink cage (made a storage tube out of PVC pipe hardware).

We definitely need a 32 Km/H limit. And as far as electronic shifting is concerned : I have DI2 on my road bikes and AXS on the MTB. Wouldn't change it back to traditional shifting even if they payed me for it. These systems hardly need any adjustment as to where the cable versions always tend to rattle after a couple of thousand km. I've had XT, XTR, Dura Ace, even Campa Super Record. Every single one of 'em started shifting crappy after some time. Never had those issues with the electronic shifters...just my 2 cents.

Needless to say at the finish the Levo won. Now the organisers of the race challenged the "Chipped" Levo and he was disqualified. Let's keep it fair. (His Levo cuts out at 45 Km/h!)

I've used the Sherlock and the Boomerang trackers. I can't recommend Boomerang because the integrated alarm is flaky and often sets off over and over again after you've disarmed it. The Sherlock has no alarm but the GPS tracking is fairly solid. I'm also very interested in the AirBolt but have not tried it yet. Invoxia looks good too. Wouldn't recommend Airtags or any Airtag-based system, it's essentially glorified Bluetooth and only works on iOS devices. Meanwhile, Android users still account for 70% of mobile users. GPS is satellite-based and will work literally anywhere in the world as long as the signal is not blocked.

The price for components are not going down. Regardless of manual or electric. These guys do not have perspective on what regular people actually ride. In my experience most are still on 26 inch. Only hardcore riders keep in touch with modern trends. I happen to be on trends but ride a hardtail. 4o years of riding serious quality bikes has made me a bit of a bike snob but I’m not the average at all. Most people are truly happy with entry level or even department store bikes. $1000 for a bike is way too much.

Slow day at school so here is comment #2. Speed restriction. I am in the US. Our 2 ebikes (me and wife) (Scott Genius and Norco Fluid) cut out at 20 mph. I do wish they would go to 25 but after that I am pretty much out of gears on both bikes with stock gearing anyway. Changing the restriction and gearing to enable faster power speeds would probably be the end of ebikes on many trails. If you really need more speed then switch to an electric motorcycle. Of course that would be the end of access to a lot of single track. Here in the US ebikes are still trail limited. The US Forest Service is still worried about regular mtn bikes, and ebikes are the devils tool. (USFS is owned by the horse riders.)

We'll end up with license plates, rego & insurance if you go 32kph+, too many people do the wrong thing. Also there's the 'Black Art' of riding around & above the motor when needed. How many WATTS does it take to go above an average motor??? Keep up the good work.

The limit is 32km/h in the US. MY Bosch powered bike has the 32 km limit. I always get passed on roads by non-motorized bicycles, even though I'm trying to keep up with them. I feel you need at least 35 or 40km/h to be able to keep up to the majority of them. The elite will still outrun you. On trails with pedestrians, use your head and slow down to a more reasonable pace.

You should bee able to brick an emtb just like you can brick a phone/stereo. At least an immobilizer with the option; on start/day/week/geotagged area etc. They could even have a soft immobilize (like valet mode) which restricts you to a low power mode, just encase you get caught out giving you 24hr before it full immobilizes.

IMO dérailleur manufacturers in the ebike space have the same future as buggy whip manufacturers did with the advent of the car. I forsee most if not all the premium brands coming with a motor/gearbox (pinion or otherwise as if they have not got one close to production all other motor manufacturers will be frantically doing R & D on one) within two years. If and when I replace my Rise it will be with a bike with a moror/gearbox for all the obvious reasons discussed here and elsewhere.

As I guess a bit of a 'bad boy' who plays fast and loose with the traffic laws from time to time (usually for a good reason, not just to be a yahoo), and an American rider in California, I find the EU speed regulations beyond humorous, frankly, on any number of levels. For starters, 20 MPH is not that fast on a bicycle. Unassisted roadies and trackies easily hit 30 on flats. 15 MPH is like a clown speed. Why even bother riding an e-bike? I bend the laws with the California 3-class system on 3 bikes: 1) I use a tuning chip on a gen2 Bosch CX-equipped bike (yes, there are functioning tuning chips, or 'derestricters' as you call them, for every generation of Bosch motor) to enable assistance over 20 MPH. It's technically not illegal until I gain assistance over 28 MPH, which is difficult to do anyway unless I am traveling downhill. It essentially turns my class 1 bike into a class 3. It does invalidate the warranty, but the bike is 6 years old, so it's out of warranty anyway. 2) I ride a class 3 (assistance up to 28 MPH) e-bike in Marin headlands. Oh my. 3) I have another bike, my 'bike-tractor', that is a dual-motor DIY bike I built from scratch with 1100W total motor power, so technically illegal unless I'm running one of two road-legal profiles (I can change it from class 1 to class 2 to 'unlimited'--full power--at the touch of a button). It's marginally over the 750W legal limit and tops out around 31-34 MPH; but it's built more for torque than for speed. There are basically two use cases we are talking about: practical biking, which is mostly on the road, things like getting groceries and running errands; and recreational biking, which can be on the road but for e-bikers is mostly off-road. On-road, 20 MPH is just too slow for me. It gets me wedged dangerously in between cars during rush hour traffic, because I don't quite have the speed to overtake, and it's just too slow to get my errands done in a timely fashion. I very rarely exceed 28 MPH on these occasions, and even then it's just by a few miles per hour--not exactly F1 territory. On the DIY bike, if I want to use a trail around people, I can just switch to a slower profile. On our old R&M bike with the Bosch gen 2, I can just turn off the tuning chip. The other option for both bikes, which is dead simple is: I just slow down. On trails, at least the kind that I ride out here in the hills of the San Francisco Bay Area and Marin Headlands, it's kind of a moot point. Most of the trails are on a grade. On climbs, I've never exceeded 15 MPH, let alone 20 or 28, so it isn't even an issue. Descents, assisted or not, are typically at 35+ MPH and all gravity-driven, so again, a completely moot point. The only time the class 3 factors in on my class 3 hardtail XC bike is on flats, which are few and far between. The trails are so remote with so few riders, I rarely pass someone in either direction, and if I do, it's either two bikes on a fire road, so there is plenty of space; or two bikes on singletrack, in which case one bike has to stop completely to let the other pass anyway. All it does is allow me to hit the few flats faster, as well as the on-road ride to and from the trails, which knocks an hour or two off of my round trip time. Those are an hour or two I get to spend on other things when I get home. It is to restricted biking as e-biking is to unassisted biking essentially. Obviously, if you are on a tight trail with lots of pedestrians/children/horses/unassisted riders or whatever, don't ride like a maniac. The way e-bikes are over-regulated is honestly quite Orwellian. Cars don't get restricted like that with a governor that forces drivers to obey the limit, why should bikes? We expect people to use common sense and be polite, and when that fails, they get cited. The treatment of e-bikers as this group of road-users that has to be obsessively nannied via legislation is frankly insulting and infantilizing. IMHO, there should be a 4th category in the California system that allows for faster than 28 MPH assistance for practical biking (but less power than a moped and requiring pedal assist as an option); and classes 1, 2, and 3 should be folded into a single class allowing up to 28 MPH of assistance, full trail access, and an optional throttle. So in the end there would be two classes. The level of nannying is absurd and has no real basis in road safety, it's just hysteria in response to a new technology. There is no evidence of increased accident rates due to the massive adoption of e-bikes; no evidence of increased trail erosion; and no evidence of a negative impact on wildlife or the environment. In fact horses, which are a frequent reason for e-bike bans in US parks, cause far more erosion given their massive weight and iron shoes; are easily capable of 30 MPH at a gallop; and cause as much GHG emission in their lifetime as an ICE car does. Fortunately in California we passed a bicycle omnibus bill this year, going into effect in 2024, that makes it illegal to ban e-bikes on public lands. At the very least hopefully the current California 3-class system will become the norm in the EU someday. The EU regulations are, again, ridiculous.

The problem is, and I've already seen this recently with kids now riding 28 mph on bike trails, not the road. If you hit someone walking at 28 mph that's a ambulance ride, possibly death. If you are on a public bike path, 15 mph is the reasonable limit. The US limit of 20 mph is quite generous. On the road, you need faster, but those should be categorized as mopeds, not ebikes and should be more clearly marked.

@@minnesotasteve but that should be a speed enforcement issue, not legislated into the product. You can drive 75 in a 25 residential zone in your car. It's illegal, and you'd rightly be considered a turd for doing it, but they don't restrict all cars to 25. As far as classifying them as mopeds, no, that classification already exists in the law and is distinct from classes 1, 2 and 3. A moped is throttle only, is not limited to 28 mph, not limited to 750W, often weighs in excess of 100 lbs. and requires licensing, plates, registration and insurance. I realize there are illegal mopeds out there people mistakenly call 'e-bikes' because they aren't familiar with the law, like Sur-rons, but those are ridiculous restrictions to impose on all road legal e-bikes because a few yahoos are d*cks and ride 28 mph on a mixed-use, paved urban trail. You cannot legislate all illegal behavior out of a product; that's what enforcement is for, and there should probably be more of it. Unfortunately, the police in the US mostly do not care one whit about e-bike/electric mobility enforcement, so you have 6kW one-wheels in the bike lane as well doing 50.

@@ryamldess It is an enforcement problem. If the vehicle is not easily identifiable for what it is, it's difficult to enforce a restriction on the trail. I'm afraid all the yahoos with their 50mph ebikes are going to end up banning all ebikes from trails.

@@minnesotasteve I already said it's an enforcement issue. But again those 50 mph bikes are not e-bikes: they are illegal mopeds, people need to stop calling them e-bikes. The illegal bikes are already banned because they are illegal. As far as people riding illegal mopeds illegally causing legal e-bikes to be banned, that is highly unlikely. For starters, most the number of people riding illegal electric mopeds nad motorcycles is a very small segment. Secondly and conversely, the legal e-bike market is huge and growing. Politicians know that more people want e-bikes, and that electrification is necessary component of adapting to climate change, and therefore a political necessity for them to support. Here in California, we had a bicycle omnibus bill pass this year that bans e-bike bans. Which brings us to the third point, which is that many small municpalities banned e-bikes long before a large number of people started riding them. In the long term, the tendency will be towards fewer bans, not more, regardless of the behavior of law-breakers taking advantage of the legality of e-bikes to ride illegal non-e-bikes where they shouldn't be.

Sorry, but if I would like to grab strangers bikes for fun, which have the scout installed, I'd just buy one of them to get the "special tool" and have the fun of my life. These bolts are holding no one back from stealing your EMTB, this is nonsense. And don't you think bike thiefs in 2023 are smart enough to spot airtags and such things? I think, if it's not installed as a part of the bike, and mandatory to run the bike, it's useless.
