Does an ITB AirBox Rob Power? + Big Power Gains ITBs & 3-inch Exhaust - Project BADASS2000 - EP15

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We dyno test our ITB Airbox to see if it robs power and make big power gains with a Berk Technology 3-inch exhaust and the ECU tuning skills of Sasha from OnPoint Dyno.

    Speed Academy im pretty sure you guys are big enough to work with a big brand so that they give you guys something that will put down the power you want, i mean, if they gave/sold you something that doesn't really make a difference, it would look bad on them, it would be mutually beneficial. But of course, that would only happen in a perfect world.

    We've actually asked BC racing for cams but they weren't that interested so for the moment we're going to enjoy the car as is. We've also got a lot of other projects on the go that we have sponsor obligations for which leaves us with very little time to tinker with the S2k. :|

    That’s why I roll my eyes when people say the S2000 is “maxed out” from the factory. I’ve seen an S2K go from 210 to 230hp on the dyno from a K&N filter wi th a modified stock air box and header. They made about 30hp around 6000rpm.

    I hope you guys remember, you guys had a filter on the 3" tube and a filter less funnel on the 3.5" tube that may have been a contributor to the extra 6whp at the peak. also, I have a feeling much of your gains by swapping exhaust systems had more to do with going catless.

    If you want top optimize N/A fully, you will have to look to examine at what RPM you want peak power/torque and tune for resonance pulses further in both the exhaust and intake. Think 787b inktake setup.

    hey guys! I'm glad you guys went 3 inch header back but there is a problem you might run into at the track. as you can tell, the berk exhaust is crazy loud. there will be a good chance that it will exceed certain tracks noise level restrictions. It's a common issue with the berk system. you may want to look into adding a vibrant 3 inch resonator. good luck with the build! we need MOAR s2000 videos!!!

    I am running stock airbox with the original choke (less then 2.25 inch) to muffle sound on my old 2.0 Saab turbo, its also around 215hp at the wheels. 3 Inch intake together with that plenum should be enough for well over 300hp. I know mine is turbo, but on the sucking side of the turbo, my car still needs to suck the same amount of air as yours, to make the same power.

    Just a heads up guys, even with the CEL fix on the exhaust the O2 sensors still burnout about every 2 years or so. OEM replacements are expensive, but you can get aftermarket versions for around a 1/3 of the price. Been watching this build for a while, and not to be detrimental to what you guys have done, but I think for the money you would've spent on the ITB setup, turbo/supercaharging would've been a much better bang for buck investment. I'm only running an AEM Intake, 5zigen headers and Skunk2 catless exhaust and i'm making 201whp, with no tune. The ITB's are definitely making more mid range, but bolt on supercharger kits (the Kraftwerk kit looks the business) are making and easy 350-400whp. Sorry if I'm being a bit of a Captain Hindsight, I still like the build, and appreciate the effort going into it.

    Yeah now that you mention it, those figures do sound familiar. Might be due to dynapak's reading differently than a normal dyno, I dunno. I might just be screwing up my power conversions, I'm in Australia and most dyno results are in kw's. Stock S2k's make around 135-140wkw (190ish whp), after the mods I mentioned I made 150wkw (201whp). Maybe I just got a dud S2k, It was low Km (60,000km, 37,000 miles) when I got it, but it is a realy early model, March 2000. Anywho, the point I was trying to make was they could've made a lot more power a lot easier.

  • @paulwade5853

    @paulwade5853

    7 жыл бұрын

    Agree with you totally on throttle response. When I first got my S2k I wanted to ITB's but after a little research I realized It's a little more involved and difficult to make big power. I think one of the faster one's with ITB's going around is the ASM s2k, dunno if it's still around, but it was making just under 300whp and they were struggling to get any more out of it.

    Did you say that carbon intake box was custom? You've already cut the underside hood structure to make room for this box, you could have an open top box that's made to seal to the hood and then cut the hood and install louvers/ scoop/ naca duct, etc to get back all the power lost with the box or closed hood. Make it the shape of a large factory style air filter and top the box with that and get filtered cool air from the hood. You're already taking it off the street so why not? Pretty easy stuff really

    Can someone explain why you wouldn’t go with a different intake that just breathes more over spending 3k+ to get get jenvey ITBs but then have boxes and intake piping made to have them not suck hot air in which at that point is doing the exact same thing as an upgraded intake manifold but cost less? Not trashing anything, I’ve just been wanting to put ITBs on my engine but trying to understand the cost to power ratio cause you can’t just slap on ITBs not unless you don’t care about actually utilizing them for their full potential. So I’m wanting to know if it’s actually worth going down that route or not

  • @ardyshane23

    Probably the case. I see anywhere from 10 to 30 whp increases just by removing cats all the time. Plus I'm no s2000 expert, but no itb's are cheap. For the same money they could have done ported head, cams, throttle body, and intake of any custom sort and probably made more power everywhere. Itb's are great to eek out that last bit of power on a fully built motor in my experience.

    I think it's just better to go with supercharger, unless it has different class restriction (i.e. carries a bigger point penalty than ITBs) in whatever organization you compete. It comes out cheaper, makes more power, less finnicky with altitude changes, and ton easier to tune.

    I feel as though with air rushing through the engine bay at speed, having the hood closed in a shop on the dyno isn't very realistic to the IATs you would see out on the track. BTW That induction noise is intoxicating, awesome car guys!

  • @speedacademy

    @speedacademy

    True, so you can imagine the losses with open ITBs at the track would be even greater!

    You guys should test the iat difference with and without the box on the track and how it compares to the numbers you see on the dyno. I feel as though the air flow would be a lot greater in the real world than on the dyno from what looks like a big 48" fan. I have a similar looking one for my dyno and it doesn't blow very fast, certainly not 50-120mph like the you would see flying around the track.

    No dyno has enough fan to simulate the airflow across the whole car at speed. Open hood is only to stop overheating. Fit a thermocouple in your engine bay and go test it ;)

  • @speedacademy

    Two very different paths. It's hard to say that ITB is better or worse since we haven't dialed in the setup but if we had to do it all over again we'd probably going supercharger for the ease of bolt-on horsepower.

    I want to do minor upgrades and your AP1 build from ass to badass is awesomesauce. Some great info here. I'm a firm believer of a (mostly) stock setup for street use. So I have a small question for my little 03 daily driver. I was excited that you posted the Tanabe T70040 Medalion Touring exhaust, civilized (No fart noises), priced right and it had slight power gain when paired with a replaced intake (I'm going with the K&N intake kit Kit 57-3514). What is the difference between the Tanabe T70040 vs Tanabe T80040 concept G? Did you make any comparisons? Also if you want to donate that old Tanabe, ill take it off your hands! LOL I am enjoying how far you are pushing the Ap1. Good job guys!

  • @speedacademy

    @speedacademy

    It's going to be noise, the G will be louder and the difference in power gains will be so slight that you should just go with whichever one you think will sound better.

    Muhammad you still get massive benefits from itb's boosted I don't know why people say this It still gives you better smoother flow and MUCH better throttle response The current one problem if they went boosted is the airbox design because it'll bias the rear
