Does An eBike Make You Faster Than A Fitness Freak XC Rider?

Спорт

It seems a lot of people get triggered by EMTB and shout "eBikes are cheating!!! 😤" any time an E-Bike is near a regular mountain bike.. But is it really cheating, and how much of an advantage? And can we both have fun on a day out?
To tackle this subject, our XC whippet Rich Payne arranged a ride with Steve Jones from our sister channel @embn

I'd like to see them go on a longer distance adventure together so we can see how they both fair putting down more miles over a longer time - should really highlight how an ebike can help mere mortals go further and longer with their fitter, younger brethren, and everyone has a good time.

How about doing a 62 mile challenge for both where Steve could only utilize whatever battery power that the ebike have. Should Steve's ebike run out of power during the challenge, Steve would have to go analogue until the 62 mile mark. Then we could see whether Steve or Rich would have a shorter 62 mile time.

Being old (61) & heavy (250#+) I identify more with Steve here, but both are much fitter than I am. I have an emtb, an XC and a road bike... The emtb isn't cheating as you aren't racing anyone else or concealing it, you are just using a tool that enables you to get out there and do things you otherwise could not. Awesome, fun video guys, anything that shows how much pleasure can be had cycling and demonstrates how people of different ages and fitness can bridge the gap and go have fun together has to be a good thing!

a hardtail 26" wheel lightweight bike from 20 years ago would get up these gentle climbs easily, they were the real mountain bikes that could go anywhere. I know as i regularly rode up about 200m of near vertical climb with tree roots on it and steps in the wet. Simply cant do that on a modern bike as the wheels are bigger, so the centre of gravity is too high and you cant get the right position, not to mention bigger wheeled bikes are also heavier, and you dont have triple chainsets anymore. (but i do on my Intense Tracer 275 from 2016) Just bring back the 26ers and have done with it. I cant help thinking that the bike industry has just gone for constant new fads and destroyed what was pure and good about biking. No pain, no gain.

If you’re winded at the end of a trail you need to start pedaling. Stronger you are up ⬆️ the Stronger you are down ⬇️ I remember Mitch Paten at Pro Circuit mailed a pair of running shoes to one of his riders once because he was to winded and slow at the end of the race. E bikes just make you drink more beer and eat hamburgers 😂

More please. That was interesting. Steve is so funny. I'll probably never own an e bike myself. Still on the fence about them. I only got back into biking in 2020 but i have noticed the impact e bikes have had on the local trails. However that's not really the bikes fault, its the rider isn't it? if you are leaving ruts or spinning out , then you are tearing up the trail. Far too few people will fix any damage they do .

  • @gmbn

Thank you! eBikes aren't really the issue, only way they might be doing more damage is by doing more laps 🤘 You can spin out, roost, tear up the trail on a non eBike as well. But more traffic means more maintenance, if we all helped with maintenance the trails would be looking fresher than ever 💪

I think people need to embrace the fact that it is "cheating" and not be bothered by it. Just have fun and do not be bothered by other people's comments. At the end of the day, there is no getting around it is literally a pedal cycle with a motor on it.

Seems like all these e-bike videos are in defense of how fast e-bikes are compared to a regular bike. We get it they are faster and you can do it with less endurance. I’ve never bragged about my ability’s to anyone who is slower than me but it seems that a large number of e-bike folks all seem to only discuss how fast they are when they used to be the slowest. They seem to let the motor get to their head. Not all but most.

The only time the compared how 'fast' they were, was the cross-country lap at the end - and Steven even pointed out it was a given... The rest of the time they were showing how much easier it is to climb steep and technical terrain when you have the extra torque of the motor-assistance, which is the main point of an eMTB - to make the terrain which is difficult or impossible (or at least exhausting) to climb, more fun.

Just saying generally Ebikes are Good for unfit people who still want to ride bikes. But Emtbikes are a cheat on the natural law of bicycle riding especially if you are very fit, its an embarrasment if one is very fit but prefer to ride motorized pedal assisted Bicycles on a regular basis. Especially performance Mtbiking where it can use and reveal the human's full potential of physical fitness without any assist.
