Does a full size spare wheel fit in a Kia eNiro 2020?

Fitting a full size spare wheel into the well in the boot of my Kia eNiro did not go as well as I had hoped, there appeared to be plenty of room and why would Kia produce a space that can not be used?
If you watch the video you see the solution reached and might be interested in some of the things I purchased to allow me to change a spare wheel.
Many of the products I obtained at trade price or discounted through a buying group I belong to so I will quote retail prices to give you some idea of cost if you want to fit a "proper" spare wheel.
Steel Wheel from Oponeo.co.uk
Alcar KFZ Hybridrad 132200..............................................£78.00 inc V.A.T
Michelin Cross Climate 215/55 r17...................................£140.00 Fitted
Changing tyres to new steel centres..................................£15.00 each
The following items I obtained from a national Motor Factor, starting with Halfords
Halfords Extending Wheel Nut Wrench.......... 635236 ....£12.00
Halfords Wheel Chocks X2........................ .....657214.......£8.00
Alloy Wheel Nut Socket - Air Impact 21mm.. .697144....£11.99
Halfords Car Warning Triangle ........................124549....£12.99
Flashing warning lights various, less than ........................£5.00 each
Fluorescent/Reflective tabards various, less than ...........£4.00 each
Fluorescent/Reflective jacket various, mine cost me ....£26.00 each
A mechanics magnetic LED torch various, less than .......£10.00
Plus..
Boots Non-Latex Hygiene Gloves - 10 pack ......................£2.19
To remove the punctured wheel and replace with spare, whilst keeping ones hands clean, not shown in the video as I now store them in the car so I can give a demonstration of a particular situation/maneuver without have to completely clean the car again during this COVID-19 crisis, I chose non latex and non powdered gloves as if a pupil wanted to use them they can without fears of any allergic reaction to the gloves.
Luckily the original Tyre Pressure Sensing Valves did fit my steel centres as ATS could not tell me if they would fit until they actually saw what they were like.
Fitting an ordinary rubber valve to the spare does not 'confuse' the car as nowadays cars are normally only equipped with 4 wheels fitted to them and a bottle of gunk to temporarily fix a puncture for a maximum of 50 miles to get you to a garage, but after the tyre has been exposed to the liquid NO repairs to the tyre can be undertaken and it has to be scrapped even though it might have been perfectly serviceable if removed and taken to the tyre fitters.
It also has the advantage of allowing it to flex a bit to check on the trye pressure, something that would be impossible to do with the rigid steel valves fitted to the original centres and of course they are MUCH CHEAPER..
This video has allowed me to talk about wheel balancing and the problem one might encounter if you lose a balancing weight, namely shaking of the steering wheel in a very specific speed range of about 5 m.p.h. Easily ifxed by re-balancing the wheel a five minute job for a tyre fitter, or in the case of the Yeovil branch of ATS 15 seconds if the video is to be believed.. ;)
Although I did show quite a bit of things one should have in the boot in case of an emergency, I did not show all of the things I actually have but most are listed in the parts bits above..
Some off you might be asking yourselves WHAT COMPETITION did Martin Hepworth win, I am offering two small prizes to the first two who email me drive@petercary.com with the exact spot it starts and stops, this is obviously not open to Martin and others have received runner up prizes.
I do hope you are enjoying my videos, it has been a very steep learning curve in learning video editing which I knew nothing about when I posted my first video (and how it shows) to now when I am using lots of different techniques, but this is really challenging my laptop, so much so that I am having to limit the amount of effects I do per session, however I think I might have found a solution, so in August I have very impressive plans but questionable ability, so in the meantime I will be producing some shorter less demanding (pictorially) videos in a quicker time frame..
Please email me drive@petercary.com with what you would like to see and if I use your idea you will win a prize.

Peter, thank you so much for making such an informative video including the full parts list in the description, a truly excellent video!! My eNiro 4+ was delivered last Monday and I always want a spare wheel in my car so today I had 4x of the Michelin CrossClimate+ fitted (which I had on my Golf GTE and loved them!) and had one of the original Michelin Primacy 3 tyres put on the same Alcar 132200 wheel from Oponeo. When I got home I just removed the two side trays (only 6 screws) and slid the wheel in. Perfect. Took minutes so I’m happy removing 6 screws to get the wheel out in an emergency... Therefore I’ve got 3x best part brand new (120miles) Primacy 3 tyres 215 55 17 as supplied and if anyone else is interested in this project then contact me if you’d like to buy an original tyre off the eNiro for your spare. Thank you again Peter and if you’re ever near Milton Keynes I’d buy you a beer for that!!

I have now fitted my spare wheel, following your instructions Peter and I am very pleased with the result. As it is for emergency use only I bought a budget tyre, a Mazzini ECO670, and I managed to put it in position while leaving the front insert in place. It was difficult because the wheel&tyre is very heavy (about 22kg) and it was gripping the floor and sides. Next time I will put some plastic sheeting underneath to help it slide in. I found removing it rather easier. I realise a Crossclimate may be more difficult because the tolerances are so small. To stop the rocking you mentioned in the video I tilted the wheel forward and put a piece of 38mm thick wood (38mmx70mmx100mm) underneath the back. This also allows space for some tabards etc under the wheel which can be accessed from the rear corners. I used a short piece of 8mm rod, a small metal plate and a wing nut to clamp the wheel securely. I managed to fit all the tools you listed in the front insert (even the jack with the socket adaptor). This leaves a large extra storage volume inside the wheel. Once again thank you Peter for providing so much information to make the job possible for me.

Hi Fred, I’m very glad to hear you found my video useful and have used to provide yourself with the “comfort” of knowing you have a full size spare at hand if you ever need one. The massive number of views this video has had in a relatively short time, I believe shows that this is a concern shared by many owners, who would prefer to have this option, rather than what is the case at the moment, where it is not even offered as an option on the grounds of ‘efficiency’ I have done most of my miles now with four steels and a full size spare and when I charge to 100% the car tells me I have a range of 298 miles, which I am very happy with and exceeds the official range quoted in marketing materials, I know there are some who get even better figures but quite a lot of my driving is on dual carriageways travelling at 70 m.p.h, which brings the mileage down, rather than driving in town at less than 30 m.p.h all day long.

Hi Pete, Thanks for the very informative video and for listing all the items. I'm a London Private Hire driver, own a first edition (June 2019) Kia eNiro. In the past year I've had 4 slow punctures, not having a spare wheel is always on my mind specially if you have a puncture late at night. Had a look at the Oponeo website, that steel wheel did come up, will have to give them a call sometime soon. Keep up the good work, looking forward to the next video.

I have also gone the Peter Cary route (thanks Peter!). However, I’ve developed the arrangement to make it somewhat easier and better. Firstly I discovered you only need to remove the right side plastic moulding (3 screws not 12!) in order to slide the wheel with standard size tyre into the boot cavity. Then better still if you just cut away a small amount from the inner circle overhang on just the right side moulding, then no need to remove any screws at all. The wheel slides easily in and out without removing anything. I also found the original centre retaining knob can still be used to hold the wheel in place. It’s just long enough to get a few turns of the thread. I place a small strip of wood under the rear of the tyre to stop the rocking looseness. The Halfords orange 1.5 Ton jack and socket adapter and ratchet are wrapped in rags at the rear. The locking wheel nut thingy and wheel chocks are in the right side cubby hole. I tested the whole system by jacking up the car and fitting the spare wheel on my driveway. All good no issues. I got my wheel and tyre from Oponeo total cost £117. Cheapest correct spec tyre on their site. Interestingly, the tyre came from Madrid and the wheel from Poland! Both separately shipped via DPD but arrived the same day. A great solution all round I think. Still loads of room under the floor for more stuff. I already had the Halfords compressor so I’ve removed the Kia one and it’s associated gunk which I utterly refuse to ever use anyway. Some may think cutting the plastic on a brand new car is unacceptable. But what the heck, this spare wheel is a permanent solution and in my opinion enhances the cars value. I used a Dremel tool to cut the plastic but I’m sure you could use a hand pad saw, or jig saw or even an angle grinder. Great information! A time saver. .I'm in Canada 🍁and had 16" 215 60R snow tires from my Camry that I wanted to use on the Niro. The steel wheels don't fit because of the brake calipers (even Kia oem steel, 2 trips to tire dealers! ) and had to install 16" alloy wheels. I'll try the winter tire in the wheel well as it is the same diameter. Cheaper than buying a compact spare kit. I suppose your students must have bent a wheel in the past to go to all this effort.

My cars are working tools of my trade and I teach the more “challenging” pupils who don’t respond well to constantly being told off or having the steering wheel grabbed from their hands, which unfortunately, pupils have told me they have experienced this when learning with other instructors and my relaxed manner was the main reason they had come to me.. However I do my best to stop my pupils hitting the kerb, knowing they are not causing expensive repair bills to the alloys if they do keeps me less tense when teaching..

From the looks of it, the spare wheel well was perhaps designed for a space-saver spare. The are invariably more narrow, both the wheel and the tyre. Plus the tyre tends not to have a pronounced squared shoulder, where the sidewall meets the tread. They sometimes also have an overall diameter of 1”/25mm less than the recommended tyre size. Which can play hock with sensors but then they’re only meant to get you to the next garage. A few tens of miles at the most.

The fact that I have had over 300 views in just over 24 hours I think there is a demand for the security a full size offers, certainly the fastest take up of any of my videos. You must have started viewing almost as soon as it was published, many thanks for your comment. As a driving instructor it is very important to me that a full size spare can be carried in the car, as a “ space saver” is unacceptable on a test and I would not consider a car that I can not fit one, although I have had to raise the floor in the boot to fit a full size spare rather than the skinny space saver fitted and did think For a moment that I might have to concoct a similar solution for my Kia, but as I said in the description. Why would Kia produce a space that can not be used? I HATE the idea of a bottle of Gunk, as if the true could have been repaired using the liquid the tyre HAS to be scrapped, plus if one gets a gash to the tyre it won’t fill the hole so you are snookered. If you do use the Gunk you should limit you journey to no more than 50 miles, which working a rural patch as I do would probably be not enough especially on a Sunday, and one should not be putting an examiner at risk by sending them out on test with a temporary ‘fix’

If you got a puncture in the rain, first take a screwdriver to remove the sidepanels. Change the tire. Because the crossclimate tyre has a direction on it, you have to change two wheels when you’re unlucky. I think I would go for a space saving spare wheel. It will bring you home.

Looks like the floor of the boot is lower in the 2021 models, so a full size wheel won't fit. But you can always put in an alternate false floor seated tyre width above the base of the wheel well.

Hi MMac, It is a very tight fit and unfortunately you have to remove the panels to get the tyre out, but fortunately as you saw in the video it is a matter of just a few seconds when you have learnt to work as quickly as the ATS guys. 😄 In reality it can be done in around 3 minutes, but with my luck it will probably happen at night, in a downpour with a full boot. 😥 I might make a wooden frame, so I can access the wheel easier and build custom made storage areas for my bits and bobs, but don’t hold your breath to see a video of it for quite a while.

Thank you very much for this video and the wheel change one. Very practical advice. I'm planning a tour of the Scottish highlands next April and having a spare wheel on board will be more reassuring. Possible scenarios include getting a puncture outside mobile coverage, or too far from a tyre repairer, repairer does not have correct size of tyre etc. It provides more possibilities. I have two questions I would like your thoughts on please. 1. Oponeo also sell alloy wheels for much the same price. Is there an advantage or not? 2. Draper sell a jack VERY similar to the Halfords but with a rubber top to protect the car's paintwork. Do you think that would be suitable? Looking forward to your next video.

  • @petercaryspecialistadi1636

    @petercaryspecialistadi1636

Hi Fred, I think only you can answer your first question, personally I would go for the steel wheel as it would probably much cheaper and would be only used for a short while so you could have your punctured tyre fixed, another alloy might be lighter but I actually suspect not by a great deal and it would not match the original Kia wheels, of course you could get a new centre from Kia, but I have not risked having a heart attack by even asking what the price would be. Regarding the draper jack, again I would say it was a personal choice, having the ‘standard’ jack does not in my experience over the years actually damage the paintwork, it is used so very rarely.. Having a rubber top might not be so strong in my personal opinion and would be possibly prone to perishing over the years, even if stored in the dry and dark of the well of the car, I’m afraid I could not say which was best for you.

Hi, I didn’t try one of the original wheels in the space, but seeing I just moved the tyres onto different centres, I really can not envisage any reason why they would not as the ‘problem’ was the diameter of the tyre not the width of the tyre. But because I am a poor driving instructor, if I was going to fit a full size spare I would still go for the steel centre, as I’m not sure I could cope with the shock of being told the price of a new alloy!!😱😱 There is a definite positive to carrying a full size spare though.... You will have somewhere to put the flat tyre rather than loose on the floor of the boot.😉

I should make a video entitled “Things I forgot to include” it would be quite long already.🙂🙂 My personal experience of using the car before changing to steels was very little due to lockdown and I am still not using it too much now because of personal issues.. But when I picked the car up it showed 297 miles in the ‘tank’, I filled it right up a couple of days ago now and it showed 289, there are probably many legitimate reasons why this could be but even if it was purely down to the extra weight and unaerodynamic steel wheels I can live with that in exchange for knowing I have a full size spare on hand if I need one. For a ‘normal’ Kia owner I would suspect the additional weight would not even be noticed on their range.

Hi Chris, I don’t think so, I would say as I mused in the video it’s the outer circumference that’s the problem, a space saver would still be the same diameter, I still feel that Niro’s used to come with smaller diameter wheels and in so doing they fitted nicely into the space provided and the holding “bolt” would then reach to the retaining nut in the bottom of the floor.

Kia say no! Their argument is that there are no jacking points on the e-Niro - only 4 point lifting points - and if you try to use a scissor jack there is a risk of it slipping and damaging the battery beyond repair. However I think it is still worth carrying a spare so that the rescue services can change it immediately and you are not stuck waiting for tyre services to open.

The video should be published tomorrow or maybe Friday depending upon my editing skills and the laptop not complaining too much and crashing. But I would only tell people to attempt it if they were confident I was in a really safe place and knew what they were doing, but as Peter has said having a full size spare readily at hand will ensure you are speedily on your way if you have to wait for the Kia Assist RAC van to change it for you.

Clearly noticeable how you could only get spare wheel & tyre in after first removing the 3 surrounding pieces of trim. Presumably this means you would need to remove all this trim to get the spare out. So how much extra time would this add to your effort to replace a punctured tyre in the rain? Thought modern theory is that tyres are much less likely to puncture than in the past but have no idea why this should be true! Out of interest, I've also procured a full sized spare for my previous S-Max & current Outlander PHEV. Also thinking of getting an e-Niro...

I have been told you are 5 times more likely to have a puncture in the rain than the dry as the thorn/nail or what have you is lubricated as it penetrates the tyre, whilst in the dry, the thorn snaps before it goes in any depth and screw/nail is discarded by centrifugal forces. However I can not find any evidence for these theories but they do sound quite convincing to me..

Very useful although I think your choice of spare tyre, a cross climate, is a poor choice. It’s seems from the video that it is unidirectional which will mean you would only be able to fit it to one side legally. A cheap tyre for the spare is a better choice. You’d have the puncture repaired quickly and replace the original steel wheel.

Good video, Some questions, what is the weight difference between the steel and alloy wheels, Aluminium is lighter than steel, but aluminium wheels are thicker. And where is the pressure sensor on the wheel. I assume if you get a flat, you are going to try the repair kit first. Thanks in advance.

Hi William, I’m afraid I didn’t weigh the original alloy centre and tyre, so I can’t tell you.. However I did state I was having an ordinary valve fitted to the spare 6:16 into the video and this is because the car is only looking for 4 sensors, which are the expensive radio emitting valves fitted at the factory, if it finds 5 it can not workout why this is and could give erroneous pressure readings, so to prevent this I had a normal rubber valve fitted, saving approximately £80.00 foot the pressure sensing valve 10:37 in. I have removed the gunk from the car, as if the tyre does get a puncture using the liquid makes any possible repair impossible and writing the tyre off even if a cheap repair was feasible and of course if one get a slit/tear in the tyre you are snookered if you only have the “repair kit”, so I have no intention of ever using it.

Hi Alan, There definitely are jacking points on my 2020 eNiro but probably a relic of previous models of the Niro, as I have demonstrated it is quite possible to use them to Jack the car up using a scissor jack, however if anything went wrong I would expect I would be on my own, so not recommended by Kia as they could not face the possible injury claims being made against them, but if one is sure of your capabilities it could get you back on the road quickly if one did encounter a flat.

Hi Keir, It’s legal to use tyres of differing sizes in ‘Exceptional circumstances’.. www.theaa.com/cars/news/ask-edmund/different-sized-spare But I certainly would not e allowed to send a car out on test with a car that would fail an MOT.. PLUS... I would not personally even consider it on a ‘normal’ car due to adverse handling but with the extra weight of a an e-Niro things would be even more “interesting”...

Hi Micah, Not that easy to accurately measure the diameter of the tyre or the hole in the boot. As you will have seen the lip of spacer bits of plastic actually go over the edge of the tyre, so even if you could you probably have said there wasn’t enough room.

Why not have a space saver instead

  • @petercaryspecialistadi1636

Stephen, A driving examiner will refuse to go out in a car with a space saver fitted and I have managed to save ‘the day’ on a couple of occasions when I had a puncture just before a test, a pupil is usually stressed out enough before but to lose their test AND fee (which obviously I would refund to them) they would need extra lessons whilst waiting for their new test again I would be obliged to give them free. True it does not happen often but could be very expensive for me and ruin my reputation. Space savers are meant to be a temporary fix, with a limited tread and small surface area in contact with the road, they handle poorly and are restricted to 50 m.p.h, so need to be replaced with a proper tyre as soon as possible. Something I would not want my pupils to have to deal with. www.theaa.com/driving-advice/safety/non-standard-spare-wheels

Kia state that a space saver must not be used on the eNiro. I assume it is because of the extra weight of the 64kWh battery.

Absolutely no way I would do this, alloys are superior in so many ways. I have not had a puncture in the last 40 years, it is very rare, unless you abuse your tyres. Just get decent breakdown recovery and you are OK, you will need a new tyre regardless, the temporary fix kit destroys the tyre. No-one in their right mind would attempt a wheel change on a motorway or a main road, just call out the rescue guys for that very rare breakdown.

John, if I was not a driving instructor I don't think I would bother to change to steel wheels, but unfortunately learners do misjudge corners and pulling up along kerbs. But as you say if you have to use the bottle of gunk then your tyre has to be scraped. I probably have a puncture on average every three years, but I do a lot of miles along country lanes where the hedges are often trimmed and massive thorns are left in the road/gutter and occasionally pick up the odd nail in trading estates and new builds, if I was to keep to established housing estates and normal town centers I doubt that I would have many punctures. In the 27 years as an ADI I have had two punctures immediately before a test one was actually noticed, in fact heard as we got out of the car, I sent the pupil into the waiting room to await the examiner and had changed the wheel before they came out to conduct the test, the examiner was fantastic and suggested I sat in the back with the wheel whilst he took my pupil past the tyre repair shop, I got out and had the puncture fixed and rolled it back to the Test centre to see my pupil receive their pass certificate. I did warn the viewers not to attempt to change a wheel anywhere that was not safe as some viewers may not appreciate the dangers. Thank you for viewing and your response. Peter

I've had 3 punctures this year only one of which was down to driver error. I walk a lot around my local area in Edinburgh and pick up nails and screws by the road side almost every day any one of which could cause a puncture. Admittedly those are the first punctures I've had for a few years but it doesn't take much and I'd much rather have a spare than a bottle of gunk. The third puncture was probably too big a hole to repair with the gunk so I'd have had to use the AA or garage for that without a spare. Calling out a breakdown service too often will increase your annual cost and you might have a while to wait for them to turn up. Obviously this was an unlucky run of events but it shows what can happen.

I'm glad you've had such excellent luck these past 40 years John, we haven't all been so lucky, nor do we all have the ability to "just call out the rescue guys". Much of my driving is out of cell service, and more than an hour from the nearest tow truck. That leaves one dependent on a good samaritan to drive on and make a call when they get in range, and then you're sitting there wondering if they really got through. Very little of my driving is done on a motorway. With a spare I can be on my way in 20 mins, the last time I was in a vehicle that had a blow out on the highway (and no spare for some ridiculous reason) we were nearly 4 hrs delayed, and it would have been much longer if it had happened 2 hrs later, after the tire shops were closed, or 50 kms earlier, when we were on a logging road! I consider a spare cheap insurance, and think it should be illegal to sell a car without one.
