Dodoma City, Tanzania, 2019
With a population of 410 956 (2012 census) and located in central Tanzania, Dodoma city is the designated administrative capital of Tanzania. Hitherto the designation in October 1973, Dar es Salaam alias Haven of Peace was the capital. The designation has not, however, been legalized by an Act of Parliament.
In the first Master Plan for the city, prepared and completed in 1976, conception of the new capital city was based on the then pure socialist development model in Tanzania, locally known as "ujamaa", that gave priority to rural areas and perceived cities and other urban areas as parasitic. As such, the first Master Plan presented a simple urban form for the city, consisting of a simple non-segregated traffic circulation system, and low/medium rise urban solids.
However, in 2013, it was reported in various quarters that a new revised Master Plan had been prepared by some South Korean and local experts, that may have proposed sophisticated urban form for the city, that reflects Tanzania's recent dramatic shift from "ujamaa", hence recognition of cities as powerful engines for social and economic development. We haven't been able to get hold of the revised Master Plan!
So far, only the parliament (Bunge) and one ministry have moved permanently to Dodoma, from Dar es Salaam. Nevertheless, since coming to power in November 2015, President John Magufuli has vowed to move the whole government permanently to Dodoma by 2020. Ambitious and probably feasible declaration by the president, who is known locally as the Bulldozer, for his no nonsense approach to national socio-economic progress and development.
Notwithstanding, that may not be cheap in terms public expenditure. The government may have to part with tens of billions of dollars necessary for spatial transformation of Dodoma to standards similar or close to those of Dar es Salaam, central government staff are currently used to! Such transformation may also be vital, if foreign embassies and entrepreneurs currently based in Dar es Salaam are to willingly relocate to Dodoma.
To effect the above transformation, new roads and utility facilities and services, new modern housing, new modern office buildings including buildings for different ministries, world class schools and medical facilities, 4-5 star hotels, etc. will be needed. Even the spatial link between Dodoma city and Dar es Salaam as well as other major cities in Tanzania like Arusha, Mwanza, and Mbeya, may have to be upgraded to consist of let say high speed standard gauge railway lines, and motorways. If the government can carry out the improvements, then central government staff, foreign embassies, and entrepreneurs spoiled by the exotic luxurious Dar es Salaam, may move permanently and willingly to the new capital! We must agree that, the reason why they are not there now on first place, is the lack of such improvements!
As of the publishing date of this video (February 18, 2019), Dodoma city is still very far away from attaining the urban qualities characterizing Dar es Salaam. At the same time, the Bulldozer is still in Ikulu in the exotic Haven of Peace! Probably, a more realistic view could be maintaining Dar es Salaam as the administrative capital, i.e. seat of government, with Dodoma city as the seat of parliament.

A long way to go in becoming a city, Magufuli has alot to do.
Currently the town is on construction to become a new City as an headquarter of the country.. Recently the head of state his excellence President Magufuli unveiled the plan to make the town to become the city So when we say ... Dodoma as a City there is a lot on going projects... Including SGR from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma which will transform the town to be the big City as the Political government is relocated over there

Dar es salaam is modern, popular and business hub for East Africa. Also with large number of tourist attractions "Historical Museums, Famous Beaches, Zoo, Skyscrapers, Expensive Hotels". Infact, Dar es salaam beats Dodoma in everything "Economic sectors&offices, Infrastructure, expensive homes/mansions, and so on".

@Stephanie Ndonku I'm not so sure about it. I have been in Nairobi for two weeks but never explored the whole city. So I can't say it's above or below Dar es salaam.
Hay muchos paises que tiene dos capitales y una de ellas es casi siempre mas grande, poderosa y desarrollada. Algunos ejemplos son Benin, Bolivia donde la sede del gobierno esta en La Paz y la capital Constitucionales Sucre, Burundi, Costa de Marfil donde hay una capital oficial y otra de facto, Montenegro, Paises Bajos, Siri Lanka, Sudáfrica, etc.

@@philip5851 lakini kaka hiyo Dar es salaam umeanza kuifahamu toka lini?, Ni kitu cha ajabu kuifananisha Dar na Dom ukifahamu fika Dar ni mji wa muda mrefu ukitumiwa na serikali kama makao makuu pia kibiashara. Pamoja na hayo yote miaka ya 1987.Dar ulikuwa si mji mkubwa kivile. Namuunga mkono rais fulsa za jiji kuziipeleka Dodoma kwakuwa ni rahisi serikali kuhudumia Watu wananchi wake kutoka pande zote kuu nne. Kukikoni hapo awali mtu anatoka Kigoma anasafiri kwenda mpaka Dar wizarani,, ilikuwa mateso. Na mtu asikudanganye Dar ilianza ndogo pia mpaka sasa kuwa jiji kubwa. Hivyo kila jambo uthubutu unatakiwa. Jiji la Dodoma linatosha liko vizuri, liongezee miaka ishirini ijayo, Dar haitaligusa, litakuwa zaidi ya Dar.
