    my favourite part is when the little girl returned the red part of the tool that was used for shooting because she understood that it was simply for self-defense. I don't know why- it just kind of always bugged me when characters got mad at other characters for using violence when there was no other way out of the situation

    I feel the same frustration when someone gets mad at them and the person tells the worst possible short story of what happened ever as the explanation when if they would’ve explained in more depth, the other person would totally understand. Like just explain what happened better! Lol

    there might be a discusion on the idea that "violence is never an option", in the sense that it is better after all to rather die than to hurt somone else, even if that hurt is caused in self defence. for a lot of people i imagine (i might be wrong though), there is never "no other way out of the situation"? ...i don't really know

  • @rileybrinson1970
    @rileybrinson19705 жыл бұрын

    At first I wasn’t sure about the music video. I, like many others had alway thought about this like a insecure person in a relationship, but the more I pay attention to the lyrics the more they make sense. And for me I feel like the question this video was asking was, “would my past self really approve of my current self?” “Do I deserve to have the approval of my younger self? I think it’s about the future and the past, while the younger version wants to see what she’s grown into and what she’s become in the future the older one reflects on the past and her past self remembering when she was so innocent and “caring” after she kills the two men the younger on is scared of her action and is afraid that she would become just like her older self, but then at the end it’s her realizing that she’s not scared of what she’ll become in the future and that she is ok with growing up. This could be dodie trying to deal with her depression and derealization and always looking back in the past when she was also younger or innocent, and she feels as if she’s turned into someone her younger self would disapprove of. in the end it shows them both being ok with there current selfs and there past/future self. Just like dodie has come to understand that although they are both different her past and current self are different people and she has changed but that change is expected and good.

    3:42 Dodie: "Could you love this" Scene: Little Girl is stunned by her future self's actions 3:46 Dodie: "Will this one be right?" Scene: Little Girl becomes afraid of her future self, scared when seeing that she'll kill 2 men in the future, and backs away. 3:52 Dodie: "Well if I'm being honest" Scene: The Little Girl is acting on fear and her instincts. She runs away showing that she is rejecting her future self after seeing her murder 2 men, answering the previous 2 questions. ~That scene was so perfectly connected to the song i just had to recognize it~ Feel free to add any connecting bits to the list if you notice more!

    0:21 When the whole beginning is telling that the girl knew she would be learning to love herself soon. 1:00 “I’m left a stuttering [teen]”, can’t say these are the real lyrics, but it sounds like it. Seeing her future self brought her so much joy and excitement. 2:00 With her cool laser beams and her arms knotted! “Limbs all knotted, it don’t feel right” I love your comment!

    That hug b r o k e me... I feel like most people know the technique of picturing yourself as child-you, as an empathy and self-forgiveness strategy, but I think the other way around can be even more effective -- maybe child-you would still be proud of where you've gotten to, would still see you as worthy of affection, of love, of success, despite all the things you see as failures. Your current image of yourself has been shaped by years of negative self-talk and unhealthy thought patterns and habits. If you go far enough back, there's probably a version of your brain that can still see all the good bits of you.

    My interpretation: the video changes the song so that it’s now a conversation with her self. “Could you love this?” She’s asking her younger self would you have like this person I have become? Because I don’t. We try so hard to be the standardized “perfect” person. Putting our “best parts” out on display. Yet we loose who we really are. We forget the dreams we had as children we loose the passion. She’s pleading to her self. Desperately hoping her younger self thinks that she’s doing fine. That the past her likes what she’s become. And though it’s a bumpy ride, monsters are still out to get you, and you made mistakes, some more devastating than others, her younger self UNDERSTANDS. She puts back on the watch, signifying that she think future her is exactly what she want to be. Could you love this? This mess that I am right now? Where I’ve killed, crashed; I’m scarred, scared broken. I’m trying to pick myself up and I’m almost there. Could you love this? Is this version of me right now? Yes.

[Verse 1] I was told this is when I would start loving myself Flirting's delicious, proved to be beneficial for mental health All of my best bits pulled forward, collected, displayed But sadly I just think that I was disgusting today [Pre-Chorus] You blew me up like a big balloon far too soon I'm left a stuttering teen How did I get here? It's all so quick, and I feel sick Red pushing down on the green [Chorus] Could you love this? Will this one be right? Well, if I'm being honest I'm hoping it might Could you love this? Did you plan to fall? Well, if I'm being honest Oh, I bet it's not that at all [Verse 2] Hope has a cost Keeping all fingers crossed and held tight But I look idiotic with my limbs all knotted It don't feel right Truly you've shaken me, and I think you like how I plead But I have a hunch that that's all you wanted from me [Pre-Chorus] You blew me up like a big balloon far too soon Holding my breath makes me choke How did I get here? It's all so quick, and I feel sick I’m used to being a joke [Chorus] Could you love this? Will this one be right? Well, if I'm being honest I'm hoping it might Could you love this? Makes you question how wise and jaded you can be as time passes. Will your younger self be your friend or be scared of you if he/she met you back then? Also, It makes you wonder about the distance between the personalities we had in the past and the ones we have now; contemplate if they're still compatible, if not the same.

    woahhhhhhh I never would of thought of the song from this POV. I always thought of it as an insecure person not knowing if the person their in a relationship with actually enjoys whats happening between them. (which is, y'know, mood) But to think of it as a "Do you actually like these gadgets and spacy things? Im not just a weirdo to you? Could you love this?" and from more of a sisterly POV is so cute im going to cry. Dodie ur music and ideas are beautiful ;_;

    This is such a great representation of the song. Her child self is right to be hopeful and believe the best in people. But also, her older self is right to protect herself from harm. And that's the main tension in the song - trust or protection? Also I love the references to red and green throughout.

    I got the feels when older self got a hug from younger self and they both visited her childhood room. Which reminded me of dodie's struggles with DDD. Sammy was right, lasers and self reflection. The edits are timed beautifully. Dom and Tim make a cameo which that segment made me reminded of dom's Content short. Which dodie made a song off that. This is turning into a loop. Holy shnikes! What I love about Dodie music videos is that it's usually never Dodie just lip syncing her songs. It's like a movie. It tells a story different from what would be expected. The music can be a separate story from the video, but they both fit very well with each other at the same time. Songs all mean something different to us, and the music videos help introduce a new interpretation to what we already think.

    I recently had to cut off my mom because any time we'd talk she would just make me feel bad and I couldn't get through to her how she hurt me. The best part of this video for me is when the younger self realizes that the older self was only fighting back in self-defense. When you are raised in a toxic environment you are brainwashed to think that any sort of boundary is evil and an act of violence but the little girl realized it was necessary to be able to assert yourself or you will get hurt. You might be sent back to the words of the people that hurt you in childhood and think that they are right, but those are just moments and it is not the truth.

    This is just how I saw it but I felt like she went back to her past (like a big metaphor for thinking of past events so quite literally living in the past), she looked back on it and remembered it being great and wanted to get back to that. She started to realise that it wasn't good and got caught up in the problems of the past (the abusive mum) and couldn't get out of being stuck in the past and realised she had her own problems inn the present day ( the guys who shot at her). She lost it slightly and felt as though she'd let her past self down, the one who never wanted to treat anyone the way her mum had treated her. Then she realised she was doing the opposite, she was sticking up for herself the way she'd never been able to do as a kid. Idk it's just a theory but I absolutely LOVE it thank you Dodie for absolutely blessing us, really needed this right now xoxo
