just a small (purpose) test after I've machined polished my two cars. Decided to go with sponge, 2 bucket and grit guards (on purpose). 1.st snow foam. 2nd rinsed car with pressure washer. 3rd hand wash with sponge. 4th rinsed again. 5th dried with microfiber drying towel. Result the same as I would use washmitt, no scratches. Just saying its doable with sponge but with some knowledge and technique behind. Regards.

Great vid. Minus the T-cut and use of a pressure washer, this video is my exact car-cleaning regimen circa 1997! My parents thought I was mad for using anything more exotic than washing up liquid and a gritty old brush kept on the floor of the garage, until my nana suggested I give mum's old Fiat Uno a polish before she traded it in and I added £500 to the trade-in value with nothing more than an afternoon's elbow grease and a bottle of Autoglym SRP. I still love walking past a car and catching a whiff of SRP - my neighbours' kids are old enough to drive now and are shining up their old motors like I used to, and no-one has more pride in their car than a 17 year-old petrolhead!!! :-)

I deeply wish I had known more about detailing when I started in the 90s. Back then, you didn't have the benefit of the internet, and the multiplicity of information available now. I never scrubbed paintwork with a brush, Dad taught me better, but I didn't fully understand the polish and wax process, and how to avoid swirls. I learned way more about 11 years ago when I got back into detailing, and since then, I'm way better at it. But man, I wish I had treated my paint better, years ago.

We used chamois's instead of purpose bought towels because we couldn't afford the luxury of buying towels just to use on a car! Also, that got the wife involved with washing and drying them in a separate cycle. Yeah, they didn't work well but a real (not fake sheep skin) chamois when wet was a joy to feel -- so soft and delicate.

Seems like a couple of your complaints had less to do with the product and more to do with user error; such as wiping the over spray up with the chamois, which is not what it was made for. I haven't used a chamois in years but what I remember being good about them is that you can keep wringing them out and they keep absorbing but with a towel once it gets really wet, even wringing them out still causes a snail trail of water while you are trying to dry. You do admit that you applied the polish in direct sunlight, again the directions, so at least I will give you credit for owning up to it.

I was a teen back in the late 80s and in 90 I bought a brand new Mustang GT that was black and was OCD about it. Man did this bring back memories of my labor of love on that thing! The Turtle Wax protected it well, but it was a real PITA to remove, as microfiber towels weren't so common back then and using old t-shirts (which caked up quickly) to remove the wax wasn't uncommon. By far the WORST product available and commonly used then was Armour All. Me and everyone I knew use it religiously on the interior as well as all black trim and tires. What we didn't know was that the more you used it the more dependent on it your car became as it was a water based silicone product and dried out the plastics, vinyl and rubber.

why so harsh? For someone who is cleaning a car, on the budget, those products, imo, are brilliant and for someone like you who is using fairly expensive stuff they may be rubbish but for others they are ideal. I wouldn't see the point of someone spending a whole massive amount of money on products to clean their 1.2 corsa

  • @MysteryWolph

To be honest, the products just a step up from these make you feel much better about the money you spent, be it marginally more expensive. If you spend half the money on something that ineffective and have to go back and buy the other product to get the desired results, you haven't saved anything.

Even modern midrange products are not that much expensive to budget. Last a long shot, providing less effort with great results. So what if its Corsa 1.2 depends in which state exterior is. If okay then it would be sin to ruin it, just practice and some techniques and it will last long time. Other thing is if you bought used car, with trashed exterior then it is indeed waste of money.

Thats what ive been doing for years, it literally takes me about 10minutes to go round all my alloys with a sponge/soapy water, and they look clean every day then.

I found kiwi black instant shine shoe polish works a treat on my old 2004 Megane. You can apply several layers depending on how faded the plastic is then let it dull then buff off to a nice satin shine. I use the small bottle type with the foam applicator sponge fixed to the top. Will take several washes before you need to re-apply.

Slight changes to the line up was Mer Polish followed by a coat of Simoniz Wax and cleaning the windows with Windolene and old news papers (don’t ask) Didn’t have a pressure washer back then or even a hose because of the inside taps so had to resort to the use of a watering can after nipping to the local petrol station to use their Jet Wash for the Pre Rinse. Tar and Bug Remover was extra firm, squeaky passes with the sponge until it was either removed or I gave up. As always another great video 👍🏼

Ahh, the "good ol days" when you only had like 10 different products to choose from and you just didn't give a s#*t as long as the car was shiny enough to trade in. Now you're confronted with having to choose from 2300 products and not enough time to properly interweb and research them all :( I don't have time to detail my car, it'll be a few more years by the time I narrow down the "best" products I want to use on my "baby". What's that you say, they'll have 4800 products to choose from by then...ahh well I'll just trade this b*t@h in and start over. I jest, detailing is a fun hobby when you restrict yourself to a few products you like and work on technique and figure out a process that works for you...and stick to it. Otherwise you're just chasing you tail. Love the content of your videos and editing...always entertaining....I especially like this episode. P.S. ALOT of products are re-branded so "don't believe the hype" or the price.

Cars are still not beyond the wit of the average man. The experience and values of fancy car ownership touted by YT car vloggers is not the norm. Young men used to take some pride in lifting the bonnet and being able to do mechanical fundamentals at the roadside. They had to it was a necessary part of motoring and in many ways still is. Now if you have something exotic and money to burn then you are calling a taxi and going to the nearest 5* hotel while the AA cart the car off to the nearest dealership to be fixed. But for the average motorist this culture of tarting cars up rather than getting greasy is contributing to a generation of young men who can't change a wheel or have to get a "specialist" to install a battery.
