Dodging Ferries from Mackinac Island to Mackinaw City
Our weeks of fantastic cruising weather are over today... It was great while it lasted, but with a Southerly and 5ft swell on Lake Michigan, we are going to hunker down in Mackinaw City until the weather shifts! Patience is the name of the game. We hope you enjoy our slow morning on Mackinac Island, heading to the rock beach, and then our short but washing-machine-like cruise to Mackinaw City!
Thanks for watching!
Cheers from the Loop,
Jennifer and Elliot

ABOUT US
Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
Thank you for following us along our journey!

I have enjoyed watching your adventures on the Great Loop. My wife and I are planning on tackling this in 2-3 years. We will also bring our dog. Did you run into any veterinary challenges on your trip? If you did, how did you handle? Thanks!

@@theviewsatlakehavasu1646 We planned a vet trip before we left with all the paperwork and medicine she needed for the year. Fortunately Ollie had no emergencies and it was enough!
Dogs and rocks, what’s with that? I was in Canada one time and this gorgeous large sailboat pulled in and docked near me. At the bow was a gorgeous, black Labrador retriever. The pooch dove off of the bowsprit into the water, and came up with a rock. Dogs and rocks.
Ferry’s are on a schedule, if they slowed down for everybody, many people would be left at the dock.I am a retired ferry captain, and in the open lake you have to keep up your speed to accommodate the many trips required to service everybody. Great video though.

Makes sense! Maybe it isn't the Captain's fault but if the schedules were made with an extra 2-5 minutes then the Ferries won't have to blast it within the confines of the harbor 😁
When we stayed in Mackinaw City we spent a day on the beach in town and the waves from the ferries provided a fun distraction for the kids.
Having sailed the Mackinaw area for many years, I know the situation you are describing. You get used to the ferries coming and going. It becomes routine after a while.
Ollie is so dang cuuute and such a great rock retriever. Really enjoyed the video and sorry for those ferries!

Great video. Also, thanks so much for sharing your expenses. My wife and I are considering the loop when I retire in a couple of years.

Awesome! Great to start planning and "dreaming" now!
I know what you mean about the wakes!! We went into the C&D canal from the Chesapeake Bay entrance, and the boaters there are so inconsiderate!! We have a Mainship 390 and those boaters are nasty!!

Oh geeze... sorry you had a rough experience there! Hope all is well!
I've known plenty of dogs that are obsessed with shoes, tennis balls, Frisbees and just general "Stuff." I can't think of a dog so fixated about ROCKS! Its so cute, just like Ollie.

I was going to make a similar comment, instead, I'll agree with you. Ollie is a first when it comes to rocks. GO OLLIE!
We loved Mackinaw Island! Great to see you guys again.

Great to see y'all too 😁😁😁
We watched this video using our Starlink in Canada! 🙌🏼 Last year we also experienced all the same issues y'all had with connectivity in Canada and remote spots. It is tough when your livelihood relies on service! But it has been a game changer in just our few weeks using it and so stoked y'all got it too!

Interesting enough, I'm sitting at slip 69 in Mackinaw City Municipal Marina as I watch this. I've thought for some time that the fragile loop crowd will get a rude awakening in this area with the ferry wakes. It does get to be annoying at the island with the ferry boats on plane well into the harbor. I've questioned the USCG about it in the past but they do little if anything to control the situation.

It just is what it is! Hope you're having good weather up there 😄
Has anyone informed you guys about rocks wearing out the enamel on dogs teeth? Love you guys, appreciate following you guys around. I will be looking up your European travels after you complete the big loop. Wishing you both the best 💓

New Zealander here, it's true I had a black lab, fantastic retriever but just had a thing for rocks and trout when I was fishing, he could freedive 3-4 ft no problem and retrieve the exact rock I had tossed, after a few yrs of this he started drooling badly and not wanting to eat so off to vet and he had worn the enamel off and worn som teeth down very badly and had to have them removed. Love you guys and your boatlife and look forward to your vids every week.

Yes! We have been monitoring her, and just had her yearly vet visit and got the all-clear. We won't be "rock-fetching" for the next few years though to give it a break!

Dogs that love rocks, I know form experience. 17 K in surgeries ( 3 in ten days) to remove rocks from the GI track and the dental issues later ... she is cute give her a hard ball.

Just went to the vet and she was given the all clear! Fortunately Ollie doesn't "eat" the rocks... It was not a problem for Ollie but that was for the Loop, no more rocks for a long time so we don't make the problem worse 💪
Being new to boating last year I hired a captain to bring me and the boat from Long Island to Delaware. Day 1 was 5-6 ft seas and winds at 25 knots in the Atlantic. Day 2 was calm with little wind. So Day 1 was like a roller coaster and very slow. I swore I would avoid anything like this in the future if I could. It was not pleasant in a 40 footer.

Wow that is quite the first day.... we all have those experiences one day and all we can do is learn how to not let that happen again! Fair winds and following seas!
Pretty sad the ferries dont have to follow the rules. We never boat on the weekends on our lake because the rude people are all out and they swamp you with their wakes and music and attitudes. I know the ferries bring a lot of money to the islands but that should be no excuse. Happy 4th of July weekend!

Happy 4th of July to you as well!
Smart move on your part staying put with weather warnings. I ignored them a few times and learned it the hard way not too. Nothing real bad happened, but sure made it a hellova miserable trip. Boating is all about having fun and exploring. But wondering if your gonna make it home and surviving is neither of those. In all your videos I've noticed that common sense prevailed. Sometimes things pop up and you have to deal with it. But you never have gone out looking for trouble.

no more rocks Ollie! we had a springer spaniel who ate then vomited them up- ugh not at all healthy for him and we want him to be comfortable as he ages teeth affect everything in their system - so take care of that precious boy. @@SchoandJo
We just returned from Mackinac Island having been there only once before in 1997- it was so lovely just as aI remembered. I thought your video was great and I love Ollie- this was a great find for me and I had no idea about all this..... kzread.info/dash/bejne/iH2L1c-pgZDJYKw.html

Cool, thanks for sharing!
The ferry boats are all in a race and do not follow basic mariners rules and courtesies.
Ollie is going to break a tooth and need a veterinarian at the most in opportune time. Protect your fid (fur-kid) better.
