A truck with a lot of horsepower helps, but most of it is simply a level road and the physics of inertia. Modern vehicles are pretty aerodynamic and have high gears, so it takes roughly the same engine power to accelerate up to 80mph from 60, as it did to get to 60 from 40.
I follow RV forums and am shocked at how casually most drivers say that go at least 70 pulling their trailers. Amazing how seldom accidents are ever discussed. That fifth wheel was swaying as he passed the truck...
I'm more amazed that the driver in the truck filming this with his dash cam on can drive that long in total silence, no radio or anything on. And not even murmuring to himself. I just bought a dash cam a few months ago and after the first week i turned the audio off on it because i realized i talk to myself almost constantly when i'm driving lol, and i don't think i've ever driven even 5 minutes without music on, i have to have music on in the background at all times.

It sort of looks like as the RV was passing the semi, the RV drifted slightly onto the left shoulder and then over-corrected which started the fishtailing to occur. This then worsened until the driver completely lost control.

Pinch and zoom video. At about 1:55 it starts. Looks pretty horrific. Yes it’s hard to see but you can see it.
At 110 KPH or 68 MPH speed most likely was not the major contributor to the crash. The speed didn't help any in that it reduced the amount of reaction time available to control the problem. Having towed many trailers, with pickup's, where the tail outweighed the dog by as much as 2 to 1 the setup and balance is the most important consideration. Gooseneck hitches are more stable than 5th wheel hitches as the 5th wheel hitch tends to be a foot or so higher than the attachment point which changes the center of gravity. Bumper pull or receiver hitches have a lower center of gravity than the bed hitches, the problem is that they are connected 4-5 feet behind the rear axle which affects the balance and sway more than a bed mounted hitch which tends to be dead on or 1-2 inches off of the center of the rear axle. Trailers should be loaded with 60% of the weight forward of the trailer axle(s) and 40% behind the rear axle(s). The tongue weight should be between 10-15% of the trailer gross weight. Example if the trailer weighs 1000 pounds gross then the tongue weight should be between 100 and 150 pounds at the hitch. Any more can effect the stability of the load and put too much weight on the rear axle. Any less will effect the stability of the load being towed leading to fishtailing or more appropriately, death wobble, leading to a jackknife of the trailer catching up with the tow vehicle. Trailers should have trailer tires which are designed differently than car or truck tires. Trailer tires are designed to roll straight ahead, they will turn but are not designed to. Car and truck tires are designed to be more responsive so that they turn better and can respond to avoiding objects quicker than having a tire that just wants to go straight ahead. The truck and trailer in question looked to be fairly level as the truck went by. That could have been one of two general things, ether the load was fairly balanced or the trailer was loaded heaver in the back than in the front which unloaded the rear axle of the pulling truck. After the truck passed you could see that there was a load attached to the back of the trailer. That is a bad place to add weight as it would tend to lift weight off of the front of the trailer reducing tongue weight at the hitch unless counter balanced by weight placed in the front. Most people can relate to the teeter totter example. In a perfect teeter totter both sides would be equally of of the ground when not in use. If you place a 100 pound kid on one side then that side goes down to the ground and the other side goes up in to the air. If you then put a 200 pound adult on the other end then that end would go down and the kid would rise into the air. If there were 2 kids that each weighed 100 pounds on each end then the teeter totter would balance out level. When loading out a trailer the more weight in the back makes the front end come up and the more weight in the front makes the back lighter. The weight in a trailer centers around the pivot point, in a single axle trailer that would be in the center of the wheel. In a multi axle trailer the pivot point is more or less between the two axles or three axles depending on how the axles are mounted and spaced apart. The loading problem occurs when weight is placed in the wrong place in relation to the pivot point of the axle(s). If you had a balanced trailer that had 500 pounds in the back and 500 pounds in the front that was balanced there would be no tongue weight on the hitch. If you added 100 pounds to the back of the trailer 5 feet behind the pivot point of the axle(s) that would provide 500 pounds of downward force to the rear of the trailer raising the front of the trailer off the ground. So you would not only have no tongue weight on the hitch the trailer the hitch would actually be trying to lift the rear of the tow vehicle off the ground. The tow vehicle showed no downward sag in the rear suspension leading to one of three conclusions. 1. There was not enough tongue weight because there was too much weight in the back of the trailer which causes the rear of the trailer to sway under the right conditions. 2. The trailer was more or less perfectly balanced which is the same problem as #1. 3. The tow vehicle had a HD suspension (so not enough weight on the tongue) or air bags which leveled out the truck with the tongue weight in the back. Most all pickups that tow heavy loads should have air bags to level out the truck so that when the trailer applies the proper tongue weight the rear of the truck does not sag down. In this case the tow vehicle found the speed that the trailer would sway at which should have never happened if the trailer was loaded correctly even if the truck was slightly overloaded. A properly loaded and balanced (60% weight forward not to exceed 15% tongue weight) with a truck that is setup correctly for the load should be stable at most any speed. Part of the problem is as the speed increases the reaction time decreases and most people towing trailers have no idea how to react when something bad happens. Getting off of the throttle as soon as the death wobble started, counter steering without over steering, and if they had the presence of mind to do 3 things at the same time using the trailer brake to apply some increasing braking to the trailer so that the tail pulled the dog straight.

Great write-up. I’ve only pulled a trailer twice and researched what I needed to know beforehand, but your comment truly goes into so much more. I don’t know if I’ll ever use it, but it’s good to know and provides more info for what to look out for when I trailers on the road. Last week I uploaded a video of an SUV pulling a trailer overfilled with mattresses that looked super sketchy. Just with my extremely limited knowledge on the subject, it’s frightening to see so many drivers who haven’t got a clue how to safely pull a trailer. If you wouldn’t mind giving a short critique of that mattress trailer video, I’d really appreciate some insight about it. It’s titled “Towing Dangerously”.
@thinkfirst6431
15 күн бұрын
@@AFTER_MIDNITE There are some problems that I see but not what you might think. I counted about 27 mattresses although some may be box springs. If you assumed that all of them weighted 100 lbs each (not likely) then the load was about 2700 lbs. Dual axle trailer best guess is 3500 lb axles for a total of 7000 lbs gross load. With the trailer the load was well within the load capacity of the trailer. Loaded about 2/3 front 1/3 back the trailer was almost level with the back a little down from the front. Mostly due to the height of the ball. Short vid so not really a good indication of how stable the load was. The real problems I see are the way and the straps or whatever they are that is holding the load down. The front of that load is catching a lot of air. If one strap breaks especially the front one I wouldn't want to be behind him. The safety chains were very tight. they should have been crossed not likely there was enough extra chain to do that. He took a drop hitch and turned it around so it wouldn't drag on the ground. Back of the SUV doesn't look like it is overloaded with tongue weight. Might actually be a little light. As far down as the front jack was if the chains let go the jack would have acted more like a pivot than a skid rotating the front of the trailer around until it folded or broke off. That would have been interesting to see. Better straps, more of them, less drop in the hitch it might have been a good load or good enough anyway. Expensive load to haul with all of that wind resistance. He didn't seem to have any trouble braking at the turn.
I've watched many rv towing crashes. I have noticed a strong common denominator. If the towing vehicles are trucks, they're nearly always a Dodge. I don't think that's a coincidence but a testimony to Dodge Truck drivers believing they have "something better" than other truck owners. 😂
Pretty big trailer for a half ton. I recall years ago our f150 farm trucks, hauling stuff either in the box or towing a bumperpull, the front end got pretty light and would wander, give me the willies, and have to just poke along slow to keep it between the lines. Nowadays the trucks seem stiffer with a load on, but that was a pretty large trailer which would catch a good cross wind if it came up. I drive a 1 ton dually for a reason.

Am I reading the speed right? 110 KPH is actually around 68 MPH I tow a camping trailer as well, on a weight dist ball hitch, not a 5th wheel and honestly that isn't terribly fast. I have a 30' trailer and tow with an Escalade and I easily cruise at 60-65 MPH and I get passed by other RV's. Something must have happened for him to lose control. Blown tire, some mechanical failure like a broken spring on the trailer or some issue with the connection. Could also be a result of not loading the trailer evenly. Too much weight behind the trailer axles is most common reason for losing control.

They aren't headed anywhere, the way they drive...
From years of RV,ing towing Fifth wheel trailers, a light trailer like that one gets a good push from the "bow wave of air coming off the front of a semi. The problem is made worse by light truck tires on a single rear wheel axle that have lots of sidewall flex to soften the ride. When the rear of the trailer with longer overhang behind the axles comes through that "bow wave" it gets pushed sideways causing the rear of the truck to get deflected the opposite way when those light truck tires sidewall flex - then the over correcting steering corrections begin and get out of hand real quick. The facts are that trailer probably had ST tires that are speed rated to only 62mph. All in all they guy was blindly driving as though he was behind the wheel of his wife's CUV without a care in the world until it all went sideways. Truckers have enough to put up with already without having RV'ers shrapenalling all over the place beside or in front of them. Our final fiver as a 20,000 gvw unit towed by a custom built International toter carrying a Harley Ultra in a barn behind the cab for a combined weight of close to 40K and we still didn't drive like we stole the rig.

Not sure what capacity pickup that is, or how much weight is on the rear bumper of the trailer. But that looks like a short bed, and the 5th wheel hitch is probably mounted too far back or in the wrong position. Also, what kind of vacationing fool has to drive faster than long haul commercial truckers on the clock? Just leave 10 minutes earlier and take your time. Even if he is doing RV deliveries, he would have been further ahead slowing down.
Typical dodge owner, they think their truck is straight from the gods and nothing bad can happen to them.
So where is the actual footage of the crash?
I've never seen a 5th wheel fishtail before! Maybe got off into a soft shoulder and over corrected, maybe had to brake really hard with non-working/out of adjustment trailer brakes, or too much weight in the back/not enough weight on the hitch. The truck seems to be riding level, perhaps the truck itself was under-rated for the weight of the trailer, though it doesn't look like a very long 5er, it might have been over its weight rating due to overloading. Hard to tell what happened because it it so far away.

I’ve pulled fifth wheels and campers for over a decade, and it amazes me these idiots that drive like they are in a vehicle only. I never pull over 65, slow down, quit being in such a rush.
110 kph (about 70 mph) is not that fast for even a properly set up travel trailer, let alone a medium sized 5th Wheel being pulled by an extended length pickup truck. Speed wasn't the issue. Either the guy did something boneheaded or there was a huge gust of wind. When I played trumpet and was music director for several Circuses in the 1980's I pulled a 31 Foot Travel Trailer with a 1981 Ford Bronco all across the Western United States and Western Canada 35,000 miles each year, often at 75 mph without an incident. (The Bronco was built with a 460 and the driveline out of a One Ton Ford Pickup, so it had all the power it needed and then some).
That’s Trucking! A little wind or a blow out will rock your world
God bless
That's what happens when you disregard the speed limit
A rig like that has no future in passing anybody. I stay in the right lane and at a speed no more than the limit allows. Still get where I'm going a few minutes behind the ones who push their rigs at higher speeds. "Tail wagging the dog" is a scary situation; if you survive, you will never put yourself in that situation again !!!
I have a 1989 Ford Econoline C class motorhome. I never go above 55mph with that thing no matter the speed limit, because A it only has a 4 speed automatic trans, it is weighed down by the rv part, and it acts like a wind sail, therefore unlike the passenger van version where driving 65 or 100kmh it would be in 4th at around 11,000 rpm, but in this rv it is at 17,000 rpm due to the wind and weight at the same speed. Second you feel more of the effects of the wind in such a big vehicle that the faster you go the stronger the wind effect thus risking a roll over.

I'd seen 5th wheel drivers going at speed like bat out of hell more often than not. Always want to show off their truck's manhood. Even without load, I generally keep my truck under 65 mph. I also cannot understand how these people like to race up very steep hills.
Where is the accident? It didn’t show anything

I drive speed limit and I got there before him.
That is what you get for going too fast in a pickup and being overloaded on the trailer to ratio.
if he is passing tractor trailers on flat land, he's going too fast. we have towed travel trailers 1000's of kilometers, probably 100,000, never over 105kph
On the highway, I normally travel at 55mph when hauling my 25', 1972 Airstream, with my RAM 1500, and rarely do 60 mph if need be, but no faster.
It seems no matter what size vehicle you're driving if it's bigger than the one behind you and they can't see through you they'll do anything in their power to pass you even if it risks death just to overtake. And then to top it off,you end up while still on cruise control, catching up to the same asshole just had to pass you by doing 20 to 30 over the posted speed limit, but now he's going slower than your cruise has been set since before he passed you in the slow lane and you already know what's gonna happen if you leave the cruise on and try to just roll on by........so you just hope and pray that they don't take anyone else with them when they finally crash.🤷♂️
You'll have that on those 'Big Jobs'..
Glad no one got hurt or killed
Speed, no need to pass trucks they are getting the best fuel mileage they can, or are governed. If you follow them at a safe distance you will get to where you are going with the least trouble. I learned that on a bike.
I wanna know how you have 329 subscribers

Why I only have 329 subscribers? if that's what you mean I don't know I'm not uploading anymore videos maybe that's the main reason I'm not active anymore.
Wish I brought my binoculars
Dash cam from the moon.
Didn't get to see anything??? Why does the video cut out just when you get to the scene? Waste of four minutes.
Edit the first 1:30
If you zoom in on the footage, it all started when the driver changed lanes to pass the other tractor trailer. The (crappy) camper started to fishtail and it just kept getting worse until it spun and rolled. Very violent crash, must have been quite a shock.
