Dodge Charger - History, Major Flaws, & Why It Got Cancelled (2006-2023)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Today we are looking at the iconic Dodge Charger! It was introduced in 2006, offering several trim levels from a 2.7L V6 to a powerful 6.1L Hemi V8. The Charger continued on for a second generation right up until 2023. This was a big sedan that was luxurious, powered by the Hemi V8 engine, and became beloved by many car enthusiasts around the world.
The LX/LD Charger’s legacy will live on for years and years to come. This was an immensely popular car, taking over social media and the aftermarket scene, and having fans across the world. It was also obtainable for most people, whether your budget was a used V6 or a new Hellcat. The sales figures also show this, as the Charger has sold over 1.5 million times in the US alone. Unfortunately, as they say, all good things come to an end, and this Charger as we know it will be replaced by turbo V6s and EVs going forward.
Watch along for a full history of the Charger from concept in 1999 to its cancellation in 2023!

Dodge was able to make a basic family sedan a dream car, and that is exactly what made the original muscle cars so beloved- they were attainable dream machines built using a common regular car but with hot V8s. The Charger was a great looking machine and I honestly think this car is what saved dodge from just being a Ram truck producer.

I had the 2006 SRT8 6.1L Hemi V8 425hp. I loved that car! I did have the front suspension problems mentioned in the video. I remember the recall regarding the fan blades coming loose and damaging other engine parts. This actually happened to me before that recall was issued. I had to get towed from my university to the mechanic that day. All that said; There was just something about this car. It was just special. People always stopped me in public places or talked to me at red-lights to admire and comment on the car. The profile on the car was so eye-catching. The high belt line, the Bembrow brakes, that Hemi V8. There was nothing else on the road that could match that car. The Charger was in a class of its own. The design, the power - just everything. I owned it for 12 years. I cried the day that I had to trade it in. I still miss it. My head still turns when I see the 2006- 2013 LX body Charger models on the road today. -End of an era indeed -😢

The '12 SRT-8 was an absolute beast at its debut, and this was definitely in my opinion one of the most iconic cars of the decade. It may be the most forgotten era of Chargers, but 2011-2014 could easily be its own generation from the restyling alone, as it just screams 2010s with the lightbar, muscular square body, and emerging technologies and was the start of the all-out crazy muscle phase of Dodge with the release of the 2015 generation, along with a very reminiscent capture of the classic first generation Charger, but then on in my opinion started to become really outplayed and overdone a few years after the Hellcat's release. The SRT-8 was the last of its name in 2012-2014 and seems to be largely forgotten, but if you had one of those back in the day you were balling. I was even on the fence of getting a '12 SRT-8 Super Bee but ended up leasing the '15 Scat Pack (no longer have it), but now looking back, I wish I had gotten the '12 Super Bee in retrospect for reminders of a better era. I was even looking hard for another Super Bee, but knowing that nowadays Chargers started to become very overdone and not nearly as remarkable as they used to be as far as most general builds go so unfortunately it would be a no go for me, though I am now looking for a Dodge Ram SRT-10. That is just my take on it.

2011-2014 Chargers also had electrical issues. The heated front seats in the 2013 Charger I had would randomly switch on when I would start the car, and could not be switched off unless I killed the motor. It got to where I'd start the car, quickly check the touch screen to see if the heated seats cuould be turned on and off, and then go from there. If I couldn't turn the seats off, I'd turn off the motor, wait a minute, turn the car on, and repeat the process. Most of the time, one "reset" was all that was required. Otherwise, the car was a joy to drive.

Dodge defenetly had some more time to keep alive the mighty Hemi powered vehicles. A nice transition would absolutely be a limited run of a hybrid version of the 5.7 and 6.4 Hemi vehicles that gained in horsepower and torque. 1 year of that special edition of Hemi assisted by an electrical motor for massive gains could shake the market enough to be able to introduce their new platform, engines, designs and more into this electrified era. Dodge has to start with their performance vehicles always to be able to keep up their MOPAR flag and community. This feels like a rush from Dodge instead of a transition and it makes clear that Stelantis doesn't care about the Mopar community at all. Actually, I rruly believe Dodge is about to meet its end, just like Chrysler that now sells only 3 vehicles, Dodge has only 4 (durango, charger, challenger and journey). I will most certainly miss the Dodge lineup, the hellcat powered lineup, the 392 family and even the RT family. If I had the money, I would get at least every single RT available to keep in my garage. I really hope Dodge can live up to their customers, their community and their legacy, but honestly, it seems impossible with stellantis owning them. Even a Viper comeback with a hybrid powertrain would be a nice transition using an iconic name and a custom plattform to do it. It would all fall in its place but not so abruptly. Clearly, we saw rhe goodbye from Dodge and their engineers as thwy started releasing the TRX, Trackhawk, Hellcat Demon, Hellcat Redeye, etc. They were clearly telling us "this is what we are, and we will deliver untill we cant nk more, this is our last breathe, so enjoy it while you can". RIP HEMI

This is probably only one of the chargers that I really like because of the wide mouth front end that was a classy front-end I wish they would have kept that front end on that car that was so beastly looking so aggressive looking they should have never gotten rid of that grill. But that is the girl I liked on this car yes this was an aggressive grill it was beastly looking it was animalistic it was just a tough-looking vehicle with that front end on it that front grill really set that car off they should have never gotten rid of it.

It never was a charger. It was a four door family mobile . a dodge buick. so pathetic that it even came about. i have a real old school 2 door charger. glad its gone. Also, mine is a real American charger. Not a canadian import designed in germany by daimler chrysler. you cant put your foot to the pedel in the moder automatic transmission like I can with the slapstick. I can put it into first and floor the pedel and slap the shifter up through the gears. Can't do that on a modern automatic. Modern transmissions are designed to take it like the old school mechanical linkage ones like I have in my car. I'd never do that in the magnum with the crappy 5 speed german designed transmission they put in the chargers you like Lastly, the old school motors didn't have the problem of the valve seat drops that are in the gen iii hemis and any .7 mopar motor. Then when they fixed that the 2009 hemis with vvt had lifter failures. That's what you call reliable and better made. Never heard of a valve seat drop in the old engines. There's a class action lawsuit albeit old against chrysler/dodge for the valve seat drops leaving new car owners with a fkd up engine or a lawn ornament if too expensive to repair. Valve seats dropping in the cylinder is not good. I'd be open to hear from anyone who can say the 400 aka 6.6 liter engines experienced catastrophic engine failure in low mileage engines like the modern garbage. Heat soak seems to cause the valve seat drops in the hemis with mds. And......no hemi tick that's found in the hemi motors today.. wtf? you call that reliable? my ass. I bought my 73 charger in 1979 when i was 18. I never opened the hood or did any maintenance when I got it. Wasn't into it then. I drove it like a teenager would never opening the hood. It took me everywhere I wanted to go and no problems. It had 72k on it when I bought it. It sure was a fun party mobiel for my college years and we all know how nice and big the back seats of the cars were back then. hint hint the girl's got rhythm she'd got the backseat rhythm ac/dc tune

The newer Chargers are faster and more practical than any of the old Chargers combined. I love the 68-70 Chargers as well but lets be real here, dissing the Charger because its a 4-door is beyond unfair to them, they match a muscle car in every sense of the word. Big, loud, and FAST.

mIne is powerful and fast. rebuilt the motor to 425 hp and converted it to fuel injection. have a garmin like pcm interface that i can make adjustment to the engine on the fly. it has a throttle body and all the sensors like a new car. Also powerful msd ignition. the 06 and newer are butt ass ugly over done crap. looks like a buick skylark on steroids. shitty motors . i have an 05 magnum r/t. yeah i know mopar made it in the seventies but for only two years and it was a dodge version of a Chrysler cordoba. . Also, no cheap crappy plastic in my 73 charger. It has the 727 slapstick transmission that was in the police vehicles and rock solid. GM and Ford wanted that transmission since thiers was crapola. So no....the 4 door ugly charger is no comparison
