Dodge Challenger SXT AWD V6 Last American Muscle Car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This last great American muscle car is going out on top with what I think is the most useful muscle car, the Dodge Challenger SXT All-Wheel Drive with the Pentastar 3.6Liter V6 engine. I know, I know...muscle cars are supposed to have V8s but seriously, in the late 1960s and 1970s, most V8s used to put out less horsepower than modern V6 engines. Yes, the V8 burble as it idles and the solid rumble when you press the skinny pedal is additive but this 2022 Dodge Challenger with the V6 engine has plenty of get up and go for today's mostly-congested and poorly maintained American roads and highways. Having so much V8 power to stripe the rubber off the expensive tires just doesn't appeal to me since I work hard for a living and I'd rather see my money go further than leave my pocket faster. All around fuel economy and daily use of a Challenger with a V6 just makes financial sense but still gives you the same good looks and skinny-pedal thrills without all the fish tailing, tickets and higher insurance premiums.
For me, in the Midwest, the greatest selling point of the @Dodge Challenger SXT V6 is the all-wheel drive system. I mean, come on! What's not to like about that? I can tell you it works great after driving in icy conditions and wet slippery conditions for over a week in this 2022 Dodge Challenger SXT I rented from @EnterpriseRentACar . Kudos to Enterprise Rent A Car for offering such a cool car as a rental! i sure enjoyed it and it opened my eyes to the fun I've been missing I was a teenager driving my rusted-out 1971 Pontiac Firebird.

@@WorksIRL can two adults fit in the backseat comfortably?

  • @WorksIRL

    @WorksIRL

    Жыл бұрын

@@thegreat1548 “comfortably” is subjective based on persons size. Backseats are usable and more actual “seatable” space than Camaro and Mustang for sure. If front occupants move seats all the way back, seat backs will force rear occupants to spread knees to sides if they’re 5’10” or taller or press knees together and point to inside gap between front seats (almost side-saddle position). This is just my quick assessment based on getting in back seats to try them out. Comfortable seats though and has center arm rest. Heads are close to roof at back of head but not having to nod down. Again, subjective so I’d recommend you try yourself to be sure because some may think it’s unacceptable depending on their body dimensions and flexibility.

This brought so much joy to me, Im 17 right now and I've been wanting a challenger for a while now and my friend has a v8 but I just want something nice to take up in the mountains and as a daily as well. I have been looking at the v6 since its cheaper and I could get a newer model for the same price as a older RT but I keep hearing so much hate towards the V6. It just makes me happy that people still appreciate the V6 models and hopefully in a year or two when I'm 19 I can buy one :)

I'm delighted you enjoyed watching my video experiencing this great car! As I say in the video, if this V6 was under-powered, it would be a different story but this V6 actually is the perfectly-sized engine for this Challenger in my opinion. If you can get the all-wheel drive model, it would be even better for trips up into the mountains knowing you've got better traction if the weather turns on you. Good luck and given the V6 models are more affordable and likely will NOT be thrashed like the V8s, finding a great used V6 Challenger in a couple years sounds like a really smart move. Good luck and thanks for watching and leaving your nice comment! 💪

Hey, I really appreciate you watching and taking your valuable time to leave your nice remarks! I think it’s fair to say I’ve been fixated on Challengers ever since living with this rental that one week in February 🤣. I’m pretty much a zombie watching any and all videos I can find that bring me back to the fun I had with this sweet ride. I am very hopeful prices at dealers will chill out over the coming months and I’m sure going to try to snag me one of these if I can continue fixing and sell a Jeep Liberty I’ve featured a few times on my channel. This Challenger is my incentive to just get things wrapped up on the Liberty to get it sold to free up the tiny cash it’ll likely generate. I presume you’ve got an SXT yourself or aspire to getting one. I love hearing about experiences from owners and anyone with eyes for these cars. I can fully understand the love of the RT and Scatpack flavors but the AWD option with the SXT just seems like something we’ll look back at and marvel Dodge was so smart to offer. Thanks again for your kind feedback and I hope to share a few more clips with my short time with this car…I truly miss it and who says that about rentals…shows what a good car this is 😎.

Funny, we must be cut from similar cloth since I’m not a sunroof fan either! If you got Navigation, I think that Challengers is the best I’ve ever experienced. Shows on the screen but also on drivers dash information display with simple directions. I just think that SXT V6 is utterly perfection! Old-school styling, more than enough power to fit the appearance, seats made for adults, smooth ride but still sporty-tight, fantastic mileage for a substantial car and just the right amount of tech that’s not obnoxious. I'm from another generation but had a very similar experience learning to drive. I got my license in 2002 BUT my first car was a 1987 Pontiac Firebird RWD. I of course was the only kid in my high school with a RWD car let alone a "muscle car". That kind of car as a new driver will either make or break you. I get so many compliments now of how good of a driver I am, especially in snow and rain. I attribute it to learning in that car. I miss that Firebird SO much and have wanted a new muscle car for years now. I was never satisfied with the new Camaro. I might have to give the Challenger some consideration.

That's so great to hear your story and I'd have to bet you're a rare driver in your age group for having that experience in those early young driver years! I fully concur that having learned that ability to tame your old Firebird's beastly rear-wheel drive characteristics in your early driver years will always stick with you 💪. I must say this Challenger is as close to that "old muscle car" feeling and I'm sad to see it going away. It's funny, this V6 had as much if not more power than my '71 Firebird with the V8...that V6 is no slouch! I truly can't imagine the V8 and I'd have to guess the "regular" R/T version with the 5.7L V8 would be more than enough but honestly, I liked this V6 as it was more than plenty for normal driving usage and still more than most cars on the road nowadays. Thanks for watching and sharing your young driving experience with your "classic" RWD and I hope you get a chance to drive one of these Challengers and I think you'll truly see what I mean about it being the last of a breed. I completely understand that "call" 💪I personally think I'd go with the 5.7L since at least it can take the 87 octane fuel whereas the 6.4L and Hellcats need the more expensive fuel. Besides, the classic 5.7L V8 with a stick-shift would be my choice...BUT...I will say the V6 still worked perfectly well in this stylish car and seeing the HUGE range on a full tank sure makes this Challenger a "touring" type car begging for a nice, long road trip without any guilt that its mileage is even better than most smaller SUVs...It's a mental game and the sound of that V8 is really the only difference but the range and efficiency of the V6 has it's own draw...Good luck and please stop back and let us know what you go with when you finally pull the trigger! I’m afraid the V6 does have VVT but I can attest that later-model 3.6L is solid as I had it in my 2015 Jeep and I think it’s a great power plant. Great mileage for the power and peppiness and easiest oil changes ever…canister oil filter top-accessible right in the middle…makes oil changes easy though Jeep didn’t need ramps sitting so high and Challenger would need ramps to get underneath to drain oil. I like this V6 Challenger and if I could swing buying one, I would. Thanks for watching and coming along!! 👍😎

I’ve seen a number of comments along the lines that it takes intelligence and thought to appreciate the V6 given the high-octane fervor for the V8s. I 💯 get the lure of the V8s and that sound but these V6s are such a great match for daily usage balancing more than enough power to outperform most vehicles around us at any given moment on American roadways while providing better than Subaru Forster fuel economy and range all with flat-out killer, timeless muscular styling. I’m a real fan of their value in purchase and maintenance, too! Thanks for watching and sharing your Ford V6 Mustang insights, too! 💪😎.

Hey my name is Thomas and I just recently purchased the same car you were driving. I had regrets about it at first because it was a V-6 but after watching this video I feel I made a better decision of getting it. Also wanted to let you know that it doesn’t have all wheel drive, but it still drives pretty good in the rain cause it rains pretty heavy where I live.

Oh, congrats on owning what is the very last, American muscle car, Thomas...great to meet you!! I'm super jealous and think you're smart for buying the V6, RWD Challenger. I think you made a great purchase decision getting the V6! I know the bias on the street has attitude for the V8s but they're not taking into account the V6 you've got is no sloth and it is perfectly tuned for your Challenger! That Pentastar is tuned so nicely pumping out 303-305hp on that platform. Sure, the V8s will cook-off the rear tires spinning them while the car stands still. To me, that just wastes hard-earned money. When fuel prices go back up, you can still drive your's without feeling any worse than the person driving a nondescript, plane-o-mobile import while you've got real style and comfort with the same fuel range and mileage. Then, when you're parked next to any of the all-look-alike transportation pods, I guarantee everyone's looking at your Challenger's muscular stance, stout rear haunches and mean front-end personality and 98% of people have no clue of V6 vs V8s under the hood. You're changing 6 spark plugs once every 100k miles while the V8 folks are changing 16 spark plugs every 30k miles! You're hammering away briskly from every stoplight and stop sign drinking 20-gallons of cheaper 87 octane fuel once every 350-450 miles while the V8 folks are guzzling $1.00 more-per-gallon 91-93 octane every 225-275 miles and that's only IF they're not hammering away from every traffic light and stop sign. You're also paying less insurance but have exactly the same looks they do! Your car is already more powerful and has better acceleration than 98% of the cars around you at any given time on American streets and highways. Your car is a touch above the AWD V6s since you don't have that added drivetrain load, rotational drag and gear surface friction from the AWD's BorgWarner front transfer case. Not to mention, the AWD system adds that much more mechanicals to maintain and one more component to potentially go bad and require expensive repair. If I were you, I'd proudly open my windows, turn up the awesome radio, don my sunglasses and enjoy driving what I think is one of the last great American muscle cars...Enjoy it!! Thanks for watching and I hope you'll stick around to keep us posted and share how much you're loving your Challenger!

Actually 2023 is the last year for the Charger and challengers. I got a 2023 Challenger GT. Was going to get the RT with the V8 bur I got the hemi orange package and it's only available on the GT RWD and SRT I think. Anyhow if you buy a tazer you can put the RT IN ECO mode and save gas. You can also force the AWD into RWD only. You should check out a tazer for your v6. Made by Z automotive. They add so many features. Also make it extremely easy to do burnouts even with a v6. You can activate line lock which locks your fronts brakes allowing you to do stand still burnouts because your front solenoids are locked and your back wheels spin freely. Maybe try youtube for v6 tazer burnout or something. You'll want it lol.

I traded my 19 SXT plus for a 23 SXT plus, I live in Wisconsin. I used to be a Jeep guy too, but I would definitely pick the Challenger over the Jeep on a snowy road! 60,000 miles total in these cars so far, many more to drive

Congratulations! Good call to reset that winning SXT choice to get the last one and gain a few more years. Honestly, I know SXTs take some heat from the V8-fans but man, the SXT with the AWD system sure seems like the "Holly Grail" of muscle cars to us Midwesterners who normally would have to put away such a car for almost half the year. Enjoy your sweet ride and thanks for stopping by...hope you'll stick around. 👍

🤣…Please forgive me, as my daughter says, I tend to slip into “old-man speak” without realizing it 👴🏻🤣. Without looking up the user manual, here’s what I deduced regarding the AWD system from living with it during my business travels…AWD mode is turned on automatically when you turn on the wipers for more than a certain number of minutes, outside temperature is 37-degrees or less (might be 40-degrees but temps never got above 37 on my trip so not 100% certain on exact temp), you engage “manual-mode” on the automatic transmission shifter, or when the computer senses significant wheel spinning which would defeat burn-outs. Now I know the V8 crew will make fun of the V6 but I will tell you this thing “connects” and lays down all the traction the tires have just short of them slipping in my opinion. It gets out of its own way that’s for sure. I think turning off the ESC or whatever they call electronic stability control may also turn off AWD but I didn’t do it since it was a rental and I once had an “strike” upon returning a rental years ago because they were able to detect is done so (different car make/model). I need to find spec’s on this AWD system but I think it’s likely from Daimler Mercedes days owning Chrysler and they used to have BorgWarner VDC traction units on the big Mercedes at the time so again, I’m sure it’s a good system because it was handling some pretty white-knuckle icy roads I hit headed home but didn’t dare record as I was tired and didn’t want to end up in the ditch. Thanks for watching, my friend!

Justed rented one. Drove from Vegas to San Diego. Rare thunderstorms. Hydroplaning was a problem crossing the mountains. Rear wheel drive typical. Really good MPG. Way better than expected. 60 to 75 mph pickup as good as a V6 gets. The only disappointment is it sounds like a V6. Nothing like a V8.

I'm curious if your rental had the all-wheel-drive system since not all SXT V6 models have that driveline feature...it makes a huge difference and comes on automatically when the wipers are turned on. I found it really helped control the usual rear-wheel-only squirminess in in-climate weather. I'm presuming you were on I-15 the "Grapevine" (??)...if so, yes, that's a dangerous 40-mile stretch through the mountains in any car let alone thunderstorm conditions with all the rain currently hitting Southern CA. I drove that in a V6 Chevy Camaro when I was 17 way back in 1984 while working at the Olympics that Summer and it had horrible headlights and that V6 sucked!! 🤣Car looked sweet and fast but it struggled to maintain speed up those mountain grades from LA to Vegas and back to LA...I even drove it up to Lake Tahoe and that Camaro V6 just didn't have the guts it needed for any inclines. All the more reason why I loved that Challenger SXT V6 as it was truly just what the doctor ordered for style, power and economy! Glad you liked it, too...well, except for the hydroplaning 🫤! Thanks for watching and sharing your opinion!...Oh, I completely agree on the engine sound, too...just can't beat a V8 for that!! 💪

I own a 2019 Challenger GT. It's a nice car but the V-6 Pentastar engine should have gotten a 25hp boost by 2023. At 305hp it lacks torque. The SXT and GT's are not muscle cars in this day and age.

  • @WorksIRL

I think the term "muscle car" is definitely one that needs to be qualified by "compared to what and when" given some mini-vans and cross-overs likely have more horsepower and torque as the vast majority of "muscle cars" from the "REAL era"🤣. I suspect the "future muscle cars" will be I6 or V6s with turbos as the "King of the Hill" engines. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience and thoughts with your '19 GT which I think is a cool looking, nicely performing car that looks better than the average blando-cars currently on the road no matter what!
