    By any chance are you guys going to be doing a video showing how to rebuild the 42RE? I love the videos, they are super informative and actually show what your talking about. Thanks

    Just about done with me first rebuild. 42rh 1995 Dakota. Shop rebuild cost more money than truck is worth. Good time to learn. I've been following a 7 year old video that is definitely a great help, but your inspection video was far more in-depth. Wish I had found it a month ago. Definitely do the rebuild video to help future "home rebuilders". Played and paused videos multiple times thru the rebuild. Life saver.

    ive heard tranny shops mostly buy rebuilt trans from national companies now, and install it with a 3 year manufacturer warranty. this is why trans shops that rebuild them locally are closing shop. its cheaper to just buy a rebuilt engine from a national mega rebuilding operation, then to pay a rebuild tech . in my area of abt 125,000 people, theres only abt 3 shops that actually build them in house.

    The shop wanted $2400 in the truck and $1800 out of it. Just put it in 2 weeks ago. 500 miles so far and running great. It's definitely a sense of accomplishment. Just take your time and reference a manual and videos as you go.

    I'm so glad that you found the video worthwhile. Andy really does a great job highlighting important details. The OD spring compressor tool is a DIY build. It's a 4-inch outside diameter. Roughly 6.5 inches long. I got this particular piece of pipe from a well driller. If you hit up a well driller, in your area, you might be able to land some "scrap" pipe, for free. WARNING: Per the video, that OD spring generates a LOT of force. I treat it like a bomb that's waiting to go off. You really gotta be careful when working with it, and around it. Not being hyper careful with this spring could result in serious injury/death. If you don't have the tooling to safely get the OD section apart/together, you can always take this section of the trans to a transmission shop. I imagine they would be happy to help. As you saw in the video, it's something that can be done somewhat quickly. Thanks for dropping us a line. Wishing you all the best. -Robert

    Great job! I have a 99 ram 2500 Cummins. Good to know the issue with the overdrive housing. As of now it seems to be working fine. The only thing is the TCC has a tendency of going in/out around 45-60. I thought I had it fixed with a $30 wire off Ebay that connects to a wire on one of the three computers on the firewall. It is then grounded to a GOOD ground. I put it to the ground off the battery to the RH fender. I believe mine is a 47RE Thanks again! PS is it possible to put the TCC on a switch?

  • @SouthpawAutoworks

    @SouthpawAutoworks

    Жыл бұрын

    I understand/recall that you've run the redundant ground for the PCM...which is a good practice. Have you, by chance tried these other things: 1). Running a redundant ground from the battery ground to ground wire at TPS sensor? 2). Disconnecting alternator power wire (or fuse), and try driving it, and see if the problem goes away? 3). Check output speed sensor/wiring? It's the sensor located on the extension housing of the trans. Note: The sensors are magnetic, and collect debris. Derbris on the internal end of the sensor can cause TCC issues. To answer your question... We imagine that it's possible to bypass the PCM, and manually control the TCC operation. However, we have not done this sort of thing. Imagine that the PCM will throw a check engine light when the TCC lockup solenoid is no longer present (voltage).

    What you are describing sounds like a converter drain-back issue. When the engine is running, the pump sends fluid throughout the trans. The Torque Converter is continuously fed oil. Under normal circumstances, it's completely filled with oil. However, internal transmission leaks can allow some oil to drain out of the converter, when the engine is off. This can happen when the vehicle is parked overnight....or parked for days on end. It's not uncommon for these Dodge transmissions to experience converter drain-back. It can be caused by a number of things. Worn out Manual Valve/bore (mostly an issue that affects diesel applications), worn out bushings (pump & stator), etc. Goes way quicker in Neutral: This is because the oil has a more direct route to feed the torque converter with the shifter in Neutral, on this particular transmission. With the shifter in Neutral, the converter gets filled faster. If you're interested in supporting this channel, here are some options. Thank you for your consideration. 1). is a 42 rh the same as a 42 re? other than the TV cable for the hydraulic shift?

  • @SouthpawAutoworks

    @SouthpawAutoworks

    Жыл бұрын

    They're the same units, with some exceptions. The rotating assembly (shafts, drums, gears) are the same. However, the controls are different. The "H" in the RH stands for hydraulic. The "E" in RE stands for electronic. H: Uses a governor (hydraulic device mounted on output shaft)(it detects road speed)(sends oil pressure to valve-body). E: Uses a governor solenoid (mounted on VB)(sends oil pressure to VB....just the like old-school shaft-mounted governor). And there's more to this... OSS (Output Shaft Speed sensor) vs old-school speedo, transducer, temp sensor, etc. Both RH and RE units use a TV cable.
