Regarding change of name for my wife. The surname on her birth certificate will be different to her surname now as we are married and she changed her surname legally when married to me. We have marriage certificate. Isn’t marriage certificate apostilled showing marriage enough? What is this document you say you need to prove she is the same person! Never heard of this.

But what if you haven't lived in your country of birth/citizenship for many years? Do you still need to get the criminal record from there?

You can get the criminal record from the new country you are living in or if you were just travelling, your home country is fine.
