What if... Matt Smith did Doctor Who Series 8? It's an intriguing question. Whilst there's no way of accurately predicting where Moffat would have gone with it, since so much would have changed, I want to ponder what episodes from the subsequent 12th Doctor era would be used for 11's swan song!

Capaldi was my favorite Doctor & Gomez was my favorite Master, & part of the reason why was I felt they had such strong chemistry as 2 old friends turned rivals who wanted to reconnect on par with that of Pertwee & Delgado. While Smith was a great Doctor, I doubt he would have had that same chemistry with Michelle Gomez's Missy Master. Furthermore, with the exception of Paul McGann not getting at least 1 Season as The Doctor, the biggest "what if" missed opportunity Doctor Who will ever have was Capaldi not getting a 4th season as The Doctor with Missy as his companion (alongside Bill & Nardole). I feel that would have been the ultimate TARDIS team as you would have the tragic hero (Capaldi knowing it's his final season), the romantic foil (Missy trying to be The Doctor's friend again), the exposition & audience POV character (Bill), & the likable comic relief (Nardole).

WAtched some Danny Pink episodes. Loved the 2nd Doctor feel it gave and the ROBIN HOOD Robots of Sherwood episode has the original DECAPITATION scene of the sheriff , but its a robot. It was cut back in the day cuz there were british soldiers decapited in some extremist muslim terrorist attsack sadly.

In hindsight, I do feel that 11 being the last incarnation of the Doctor’s first cycle retroactively benefits his “death” arc in S6 slightly. It could’ve been a lot more imo, but the idea that the Doctor was struggling with the idea of being without his usual ‘get out of death free’ card silently is a neat head-canon.

@@ogpandamoniumI honestly get the confusion, but the way that 12 was doing his last scene almost could be seen as him bargaining with the TARDIS to keep going. “Let’s get it right,” and then doing a whole criteria of who this next Doctor, 13, was going to be. 13s existence (and you can even see it with how Chibs and the BBC were handling the show) is almost entirely the Doctor trying to convince herself and the TARDIS that doing the same old same old adventures is the way to go. This then could lead to 14 being depression, which PERFECTLY fits with how his story ends: him resting and healing from EVERYTHING with the Nobles. Then perfectly leading to ACCEPTANCE being 15:” I’m fine because you fix yourself.” 15 is energetic and happy because 14 healed (but how that works with bigeneration is all up in the air🤷‍♂️)

He was and still is my absolute favourite, but I remember feeling an absolute high at the time feeling like his run was going super strong, and then we got the news dropped just one day outta the blue and I was like “Oh, this is gonna be it?!” I don’t think it’s necessarily true that Eleven didn’t work without the Ponds. I just feel like he needed a full and proper 12/13 epsiode series with Clara where she’s written more like she was in Series 8.

I really wish Matt Smith kept the original TARDIS from his run (from 5 - 7A) for the whole time instead of switching to the new one Capaldi used in 7B's "The Snowman." Matt wanted to do S8 but while it’s not been openly confirmed by the BBC because they never would admit it they pushed him out of the role, the same goes for Capaldi Borge actors loved Doctor Who and Matt wanted to do at least 1 more season possibly 2. Capaldi really saw himself as the Doctor still does today and wanted to play the role as long as possible he could easily gone on for 5 more years, but again the BBC pushed him out. It’s one of the reasons all this time later Matt now has begun to begrudge the BBC for what they’ve done to the show, how they pushed him out and how they’ve never asked him back not even for the 60’th. Which is why Matt has stated recently he doesn’t ever want to return unless it’s perhaps for something like to play the Master stealing one of the doctors faces which is a great idea and would actually be an excellent story. Capaldi on the other hand again is sorta doing a Tom Baker where he wanted to stay as long as possible until he was removed and then will never return as it makes it that much more special for the time he had.

In an ideal world, the Ponds would have left at the end of Series 6. They were dead weight after The Wedding of River Song and The Angels Take Manhattan was trash, especially compared to their perfectly satisfying sendoff in The God Complex. Their story should have ended with River telling them that the Doctor survived and Amy realising that she's his mother in law. Series 7 should have been focussed entirely on Smith and Clara.

The problem with the Weeping Angels being 11's 'main villain' lies in the fact that the Weeping Angels aren't very strong as a recurring villain. Their original concept was so simple yet so powerful that it didn't leave much room for expansion. The lore that keeps getting piled on only detracts from them; it becomes messy, convoluted, and ultimately takes away from their mystique. It's like if the Midnight Entity was visually depicted and given a backstory - no thanks!!

And I found the way that companion switch was really interesting, even if the Clara was kinda boring for most of Series 7. But I have to agree with you that Series 7 might have played better if Amy and Rory weren't written out until the end. Those characters felt like essential foils to his incarnation of the Doctor & it was always going to be a tall order giving him a new sidekick that wouldn't live in their shadow. (Amy is so tied to 11 that even though she was dead, she appeared several times in Smith's last episode because it was just mandatory for closing his story arcs). Although it would have greatly helped if the Flatline version of Clara is the version we got from the start and stuck with in Series 7B

I disagree, I liked the 12th Doctor's chemistry with Clara much better and I don't think Missy and 11 would've worked as well being foils to one another. Capaldi and Coleman had much better tension and chemistry to their relationship. And Capaldi's straight man was the perfect counter to Missy's zany personality. Personally I like the send off that 11 got, he died saving an entire planet for almost a thousand years and that is the perfect send off for a Doctor. His sacrifice even moved the Time Lords to the point where they gave him more regeneration energy despite him being the one who locked them away. His last speech about needing to keep moving on, dropping the bowtie and the final Amy moment were great for me.

I'm loath to imagine any Capaldi episodes with Smith, since they were so strongly tied to his Doctor's arc all the way through - could you really have the 11th Doctor ruthlessly & methodically allowing people to be taken by the Mummy? Or would it have worked between Coleman & Smith to have Clara role-play as the Doctor? I also think that including Danny Pink for half a series would make him feel like even more of an afterthought than he already does in series 8, so I would be keen to drop him entirely from proceedings...

Great vid as always! As someone rewatching through the whole show right now, there’s this sense of series 7 as a bit of a loose thread for Eleven. Time of the Doctor tries to function as an appropriate ending, tying back to the cracks and all, but I think 11 has a fully formed, tight emotional arc as a character from The 11th Hour through to The Doctor, the Widow, and the Wardrobe, and series 7 feels consistently at odds with how complete that story was.

What would anniversary specials look like, would the show still be as popular would it have been cancelled because of this etc

Matt Smith DID express regrets of not going through with one more series, as he had an absolute blast during his time with Jenna Coleman. Perhaps he simply departed with Peter Davison’s in mind with doing 3 series being the ideal run before things got messy. As my favorite incarnation, one last series would’ve been chef’s kiss.

The thing is, Matt WAS meant to stay for Series 8 and the Time of the Doctor special that he regenerated in was meant to be a whole season long. Then Matt informed Moffat after the 50th that he wanted to go and Moffat had to shove it in to one hour long story. As for the Ponds, Karen and Arthur WANTED to go so wouldn’t have done the rest of series 7 anyway…

For my reorder; The Ponds last longer, possibly even setting the Angels take Manhattan as an episode or two before Day of the Doctor. As such, Clara appears as the impossible girl more often. IE, Eleven and the Ponds go to the house in Hide, and it's Clara who's either the psychic girl, or the 'ghost'. This both allows the Ponds to more naturally go "Actually, we want to spend more time just living our lives" like in Power of Three etc, builds up the Impossible Girl arc far more, and allows more Clara & Ponds dynamics. Then the Angels happen, and remove Amy and Rory, then the Snowmen, Bells of Saint John, and then change the Name of the Doctor into a 2 parter, with Journey to the centre of the TARDIS being modified to be part 1. Clara jumps in the time stream in Name of the Doctor, everything is all good on that end, then we have Day of the Doctor, as normal, which is now just the end of season 7. Season 8 would then basically follow your episode list, except it ends with Time of the Doctor, instead of the Face the Raven arc. I'd maybe replace or add a few episodes in Season 8 with Clara episodes in Season 7b that would've been cut to allow for more Ponds, stuff like Crimson Horror, Nightmare in Silver etc. Then with Season 8 ending with the Time of the Doctor special, we can start Capaldi's run as a mix of the strongest elements of the actual Seasons 8 and 9, resulting in Clara starting her Capaldi era with nothing but the Doctor, who now has to start his regeneration dealing with the Witch's Familiar episodes.

Some of this works surprisingly well. The strange Smith thematic hooks in Capaldi’s era like the diner or River’s last night also beam with a new intensity in this context, taking us, as you said, full circle. I think what most struck me is just how much more interesting it is for Smith to have one final season that kind of completes him and settles him as a character in his own right, without the Ponds. In general, I can’t help but feel the current three series standard for Doctors is rushed. Tennant kind of picked up straight from Eccleston with not too many changes (Rose being at the forefront), and had three packed series, and a year of specials, feeling like he got to really be developed. We haven’t had that since.

While I do love the idea of the thought experiment as it is, and even a lot of the connective tissue of the story following the plot threads of Day of the Doctor, I feel like there is an underappreciation of the aspect of the performers influence vs a pure writing standpoint. Specifically when it comes to adapting elements of both seires 8 & 9, there has been implied through at least more than a few sources that Capaldi had a big influence on the direction and characterization of 12 even beyond performing on set. While I have no doubt that Smith could pull off the scenes in a technical sense(hell all you have to do is look at his other work ie. HOTD): the performance you are imagining in your head is still heavily based on the personal characterization of another actor and what they thought the moment should feel like. For an example: there are many moments throughout the 11th Doctors run where his anger boils into rage that nearly can't be contained or played in a smug senes ie. Colonel Runaway and the defeat of the Silence. Now compare those scenes to a more cold fury or scolding nature that is often chosen by Capaldi in the episodes chosen ie. "Go to Hell" and "When I am angry with you" lines. Even compare their attempts at convincing people to turn away from their demons and think about Smith would have delivered the Zygon Inversion speech by comparison to the almost desperate plea from 12 that I, personally, cannot imagine coming from 11. I'm not saying that either actor can't pull off either emotion well or consistenly, but I feel like there is more of a trade off than is initially considered. One personally I wouldn't make--but hey I'm bias because 12 is my favorite Doctor so far. There would be a lot more lost than initially considered by switching places, imo. But hey, thats just like my opinion man.

I’ve felt this for quite some time. There are certainly plenty of episodes of Series 8 that feel like they were written for Smith. Into the Dalek with its ending speech screams Smith with the slightest changes for Capaldi with the only notes for changes being “he’s older and gruff.” Like they weren’t ready for Capaldi. It could have been a fantastic series with Smith in competition with Pink but having less of a visual age gap. But on the flip side, Series 9 wouldn’t have been as strong if it weren’t for Series 8’s failures with Capaldi. It’s not that he’s old and gruff, he’s rock n roll and a great soliloquist.

  • @doctorravenclaw2649

Interesting idea, although I think your Series 8 would feel a bit overstuffed. While I’m not a huge fan of Danny Pink, I don’t think his death and conversion would have had as much impact if it had been halfway through the series. I think if Missy did go to Gallifrey it would work better if we’d seen her a few more times before (or even if the appearances we did have were more spread out). I also don’t think Listen or Heaven Sent would work as well with 11. They suited 12 perfectly because of his more contemplative character, whereas 11 was a bit more erratic. You mentioned at the start that you would have liked Clara to start in Series 8. Were you creating your Series 8 assuming this? If so I don’t think the Zygon two parter would be a good companion introduction, particularly as it focuses around ‘people’ not being who they seem. I also don’t think she and the Doctor would have had enough time together for him to go to the extent he did to save her.

This was really fun to imagine, as much as I love Capaldi I think this vers of S8 would have been amazing. I think Clara and 11 had amazing chemistry and were fun together, but it didn't have the emotional depth or conflict that 11 and the ponds or 12 and Clara had. She almost felt like escapism for 11 in S7 after the ponds leave rather then a fully fleshed out companion, but in S8 with Capaldi, the relationship takes on new dimensions that would be really interesting to see with Smith instead as the way she clashes with 12 is so different to how she is with 11

This is something that I have wondered about for years and it is great to see a video made on it. I believe the idea of the Doctor struggling with the prospect of his death is so interesting and something that would have been awesome to explore. How would the Doctor feel about knowing that there isn't any regeneration this time to save him? Really excellent video as always! Despite having thought of this what if over the years I think what would worry me the most about it is that for me series 8 with Capaldi is my favorite of his run with a lot of those episodes being great. The arc he shares with Clara is fantastic and something that I at the time had never seen before, not in that context at least. I think as great as this idea sounds I would worry that if Capaldi did take over from Smith as happened in this scenario I think Capaldi would lose a lot of his great episodes. Which is something you did mention tbf. Nevertheless, I loved the hypothetical and loved the ideas! I would love to see a What If on David staying for series 5.

I'll make one change. Put 'Mummy on the Orient Express' before 'Dark Water'/'Death in Heaven', but instead of it being "one last trip" for Clara, it's instead one trip for Danny. The Doctor noticing his dislike for Danny is causing friction between him and Clara decides to be the bigger man and take the two on a getaway together (Eleven tried to be a wingman for Sophie and Craig, he tried to do it for alternate timeline Amy and Rory, he'd try to help Clara) - before Danny and Clara can clarify this is a date however, the Mummy strikes. Danny sees The Doctor sacrificing lives in order to understand The Mummy, this further cements his disdain for The Doctor. Danny is eventually the one to clock the Foretold is a soldier - considering none of the highly educated scholars or scientists noticed that, so it proves his worth to The Doctor. After the train is blown up, it's Danny who wakes up first, and The Doctor has the "Sometimes all we have are bad choices, but we still have to choose" conversation with him - the two former soldiers have now reached a mutual appreciation of one another You end the episode on a happy note, Clara and Danny are together, Danny has an open invitation to come aboard the TARDIS whenever he wants - we've got our new Rory character for the second half of the series. Until the beginning of next episode, when Danny is killed (I did say he was the new Rory) and Clara's world comes crashing down.

True, Clara got a freaking yo-yo treatment as far as her character arc is concerned. However, there was something about her that just spoke to me. I literally cried, I think, when I saw her die with the Raven episode unlike with all the other companion deaths like Bill and the Ponds and the Doctor-Donna getting erased from Donna's mind. It's been a while since I saw the Raven episode. admittedly, considering I always skip it after I saw it once, I'm not quite sure if I did cry while watching it.

It was my fave as a kid but feels underbaked when I look at it now. Smith staying for Series 8 could have fixed a lot of this. The Trenzalore ark really did need more time to breathe. Personally, I would have the Husbands of River Song as the 2013 christmas special and have Series 8 build up to the Time of the Doctor as the Series finale. Still, I love the video and the attempt to have Series 8 with Smith post TOTD. Looking forward to when you do this with Tennant in Series 5.

Really fascinating idea that would of been so good for 11's final outing. I thought a bit about the potential of Moffat staying on with Capaldi after and what that could look like. It may feel obvious saying starting with S10 and Pilot but that would then loose all the good moments of 'am I a good man' which was so integral to 12's arc. and while you've used a bunch of his best episodes here, I’ve reordered some the remaining episodes from S8/9 to maybe make a potential new first series. In reality I'm sure many of the episodes would be changed and re-written but the arc would stay the same. I also made 1 big change with Matt Smith Regenerating in the S9 opening 2 parter which also introduces a new companion. which might be a lot for one episode. but I think to get the 'Am I a Good Man' from 12 we need a companion who met him before he regenerated. as well as giving the Moments where Clara's reaction to regeneration in Deep Breath better snese. So… E1/2. After Husbands we start with a new story built for 11's departure and a new companion. this will mostly be focused on the companion and their reaction to meeting and maybe becoming attracted to 11. This is a 2 parter and will have Tardis time travel to get the companion used to the Tardis and moving through time. We maybe have Matt's speech from Time of the Doctor at the end of episode 2 or something like it, or maybe not and we are entirely focused on the companion which I think would be a good twist on a regeneration and honestly big speeches for regenerations don't work so well imo. Alternatively it could be like 5's regeneration where we have a big heroic moment, he saves the new companion then regenerates in front of her in the Tardis. E3. We then get thrown into Deep Breath with Capaldi and the new companion. this will mostly stay the same and we get to see more of their dynamics. (if the opener is good I think the Chemistry could be believed) E4. We then go into Into the Dalek for E4 which is pretty similar not much to say here. Don’t be lasagna. E5. I struggled with this spot. Ideally we would get a new rompy historical but going on what we’ve got left of S8/9 I’ve put Time heist. Just a fun, light adventure with maybe allusions to other off screen adventures showing the 2 are becoming close (Listen’s opening ‘I can’t do this’ kinda thing) E6/7. will be Under the Lake/Before the Flood. A solid story and with the companions built relationship I could see the cards not being out of place for the fun gag. I had wondered about Girl/Woman but the hybrid story didn’t go anywhere and isn’t needed in this series so it’s been cut. E8. is Sleep no more. Running a bit low on good episodes now so potentiality in a new S9 world it’d be a different adventure but I like what I’ve got in store for this story as it has a cliffhanger… I had considered Kill The Moon, and that could also work in an alternate take to the second half of the series. If we do Kill the Moon here the next episode should be a mummy like episode, however since that journey happened in your new S8 anyway I think let’s let that story be Clara’s. E9. will be In the Forest of the Night. Or a better episode than that but something light and similar. I’m tempted to give the new companion a teacher job again even after Clara, but they could also be a museum curator or something like that to explain why she might be around a group of school kids idk go wild with ideas. E10. Is Sleep no More Part 2. The episode felt so bizarre that giving it’s part 2 after an episode interlude feels right somehow. It also breaks up the heavy 2 parters in this series a bit. IDK what it’d be about. But a resolution with not much explanation or reference to the story in the middle of the 2. Just something different. E11/12. will be The Witches Familiar/ Magicians Apprentice. What better way to end the series than with an opener and Capaldi being forced to face Missy and Davros. We could get a big culmination of ‘Am I a good man’ which would have been littered across the series (although I’ve not mentioned it) crescendoing with giving the regeneration energy and fun ‘I am an Idiot with a box’ revelations and him not killing the child Davros. E13. Finally will be Last Christmas and potentially the exit for the new companion like it was supposed to be for Clara. Leaving space for Capaldi’s second season to be based at the Uni and S10 to start as it did, with him staying for S11 and doing 2 series of Bill and 12, with maybe Nardole or some other new 3rd companion. In this S10/11 Missy’s reveal in the vault would be a slower burn and potentially end S10 with that reveal and the Monks 3 parter and S11 ends with The Doctor Falls and fully focusing the good Missy journey. Anyway this is all my thoughts and just a bunch o’ fun. If Capaldi did have a S9 it would probably not use much of the leftover scraps and have a new story. But as long as the am ‘Am I a good man’ beats gets hit before the Uni I’m happy. TL;DR S9-E1/2: Modern Earth based New companion story with 11 regeneration (plus time traveling shenanigans) S9-E3: Deep Breath S9-E4: Into the Dalek S9-E5: Time Heist (Or New Rompy Historical) S9-E6/7: Under The Lake/before the Flood S9-E8: Sleep No More Part 1 (Or a Kill the Moon with Mummy-like episode for E9 And Forest/Sleep for E10) S9- E9: In The Forest of the Night S9-E10: Sleep No More Part 2 S9-E11/12: Magicians Apprentice/Whiches Familiar S9-E13 Last Christmas (Companion Departure) S10 - Mostly the same with 12, Bill (Nardole or new Nardole) but The vault/Missy reveal for the finale. S11 - More of 12, Bill, Nardole & Missy with 12 regenerating in the finale being now World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls. Let me know any thoughts others have! :)

I think Smith kept the boat afloat (and sailing smooth popularity wise) after what could have been a difficult transition from Tennant/RTD, which allowed for the risks and amazing storytelling once Capaldi came in. I don't know if it'd be too similar and too close to series 6 structurally, but I certainly think a series that saw Matt Smith called to Trenzelor by the Church of the Silence in its opener could be interesting. You'd see him spend the season running from them and his newfound mortality, Kavastra's pursuit of him would be recontextualised as preventing time from unravelling all along as she didn't believe he'd ever return. But then in the end he would only to discover it was a ploy of Missy wanting to prove to him that when his life was truly on the line he'd act in his own self interest rather than the universe's.

I feel like having both the gallifrey and missy arc in the same season would make it feel too overcrowded and disjointed with little room to breathe. Also i’m not sure if the payoff with Clara and Danny would work the same as their relationship would possibly feel extremely rushed and underdeveloped especially regarding Clara’s betrayal i don’t see it hitting the same. I like the idea of Hell Bent with Missy and Danny but i’m not sure it works with a Cyber-army attacking the citadel? all feels a bit fanwanky to me the part about Clara and Danny flying off is really great tho i think it’s makes much more sense than Clara and Ashildr (Me?) travelling the universe for an undisclosed amount of time. Maybe instead of a Cyber-army Missy simply brings back Danny moments before his death with the intention to kill him just to fuck with Clara and The Doctor. great video overall tho definitely enjoyed the speculation over what might’ve happened if Smith stayed considering how close he came to doing series 8.

I've always felt that 2013 should've been a year of specials. Like 2009 and 2022. I know there are a lot of other factors behind the scenes the influences these kind of things, but if I think it would've been cool if: 2012 was series 7, 12 episodes, all building up to Trenzalore and rounding out the silence arc. Then have three 2013 specials, the name of the doctor, the day of the doctor, and the time of the doctor, as they were, but with hopefully more room to breath as a more complete series 7 allows more aspects to be fleshed out and some of the more minor plot points to be answered.

Series 6 is my all time fave series so to see a return to the darker 11 would be great in my opinion. I loved all of 11s run tbh even series 7 .But so happy we got capaldi.

If you cram the best episodes of any two seasons together you are going to end up with a strong season, so this feels like cheating. Moffat leaving at this point would mean no World Enough and Time, which is unacceptable.

So if this happened, and then everything got shunted back a year, we would have had power of the doctor as our 60th anniversary special, which I think would have worked but I still think that RTD would have wanted to be a part of it and we may have had a multi doctor story with 13 and 10 which would have been very interesting to see.. something cool to think about

The 9th doctor was the one who needed more seasons. Eccleston was fantastic, but had a criminally short run.

These kinds of what ifs are always limited by the fact that there's not all that much point in making brief plot grabs for 13 all new episodes so you're left with existing episodes (or episodes that were proposed but weren't produced), and for me it's so hard to see many of these episodes with anyone other than Capaldi in them as the Doctor. That said, I think your thought process in how the season should progress and what the denouement should be is really solid. It's always interesting to think about Doctor Who might've changed in these alternative scenarios and I think the changes you've proposed would've made for a really engaging series, but would've taken a lot of rewriting from the original stories to get them to better fit the Matt Smith Doctor and the arc you were going for.

I think series 7 suffered from a lot of the same baggage that series 20 did back in the classic era Both of them had an anniversary year to contend with and could get bogged down with shoed in references (Great Intelligence, Impossible girl resolution in s7 & the call back every ep schtick in s20) as well as changing casts with Clara and Turlough. They have a few duds and get crap for it even now - but I have a lot of love for both! I wasn’t overly enamoured with s7 in 2013 but looking back 7b has some great eps (I personally love Akhaten, Hide and Crimson Horror) and s20 has some of my all time faves (Arc of Infinity, Mawdryn Undead, Enlightenment) - and both anniversary specials turned out pretty damn good! Idk - maybe I’m just proof that even the middest things will have someone out there to love them 😅

I think the problem with the second half of S7 and the majority of S8 is Clara herself. She seems to have been hastily shoved into the series as a plot device, and when that purpose had been fulfilled, they simply didn't know what to do with her anymore. S8 spent most of its run trying to figure out who Clara actually is, adding traits to her personality that sometimes went against the ones she displayed during S7. This is not to say that Jenna Coleman's performance was poor in any way; I think she did a splendid job with what she had. Yet you can only do so much when the writing is subpar.

I've mentioned this before but my issue with matt Smith's series is that his era went in the opposite direction compared to 10 and 12,series 2 and series 8 were a bit slow to get things going but by the time we got to their final season everything felt like it was in full swing and this was doctor who at it's very best,in contrast like you said Matt Smiths first series was one of the strongest starts we ever got but the rest of his seasons failed to keep up
