    Miriam Margolyes absolutely killed it as the voice of the Meep. Considering she's played both sweet and nasty characters, it's great to finally see her get to take on both roles at the same time! That said, it's a miracle she got through an entire show without swearing once... XD

    On the Tardis interior, Capaldi’s was carried over from Smith but with added decorations which made it feel more lived in. Hopefully when Ncuti starts it will get a bit more decorated.

    Ncuti definitely looks like a colourful and fashionable Doctor just going off of his attire. So I can imagine him grubbing buckets of paint and throwing it everywhere lol. But the new Tardis interior is like a mix of Doctor 1, Doctor 9, 10, 11, 12 and i guess a little bit of 13 if you squint. The main console is straight up a modern version of Doctor 1's Tardis. The multi floor is like Doctor 11 to 12 but with 11s curved staircase. The entrance pathway is very Doctor 9 and 10. Can't forget the circle things (call back to 50th anniversary which they don't know what the heck they are but love them anyway). And 13th i guess is the little quality of life functions of the console. Jodie wanted a family, what's better than a cup of tea, coffe or hot chocolate while hanging out with your friends and family?

    5:40 "These aliens are so British." I've noticed that as a tendency (I'm from Kentucky). What I figure is that aliens mostly sound British because they tend always to invade either England or South Wales, and they do it to blend in. The exception would be the Martians, who don't say anything, they just annihilate Woking straight away.

    I think the Tardis interior being so big and white makes it feels so empty and almost medical and not welcoming or homely enough, unlike Matt's large warm coloured console room. But I thought this episode was great and feel that Doctor Who is finally fun, enjoyable and relaxing to watch again, even if the metacrisis solution was a little rushed! Awesome reaction Luke, cant wait for Deepas reaction in 2025 lol!

    I'm on a smattering of sci-fi adjacent discords and pretty consistently the response from trans folks (especially in the UK) talking about it has been variations of "actual tears of joy that not only is *Doctor Who* doing trans rep, but doing it well", even if the ending twist was a bit clunky.

    I was with the episode 98% of the way, but i think them just “letting go” of the Doctor-Donna was a cop out. And the little jab about The Doctor not understanding cause he is male presenting feels so out of place when the whole episode is championing gender identity.

    I’ll admit I found the ‘male identifying’ line a bit unnecessary but I’ve taken Donna and Rose’s situation to be so:- The meta crisis has passed down; the energy has diluted down the genome and it’s no longer a danger to their immediate life. In those moments both Donna and Rose have seriously enhanced intelligence, and largely the knowledge of the first to tenth Doctors. We’ve seen The Doctor choose to voluntarily use regeneration energy for his own purposes so they can too. One time deal though. They know it’s largely a danger to them and so they just let it pass.

    As an old-school DW fan here in the States, I am still really out of it in terms of keeping up on non-tv storylines, nor do I know the actors in this who weren’t in the show already. So, I not only had no idea that The Meep was evil, but I didn’t catch on that Rose was trans until I started watching various reaction videos after I saw the special. I was just trying to keep up on the storyline while watching, so I didn’t really understand what the boys were shouting at her in the show, nor did I pick up on Sylvia’s concern over calling her pretty. Considering that one of my nieces is trans, you would think I would have been more aware of the dialogue, but, nope! Even with missing that huge part of the resolution of the metacrisis, I still really enjoyed the special! I am definitely looking forward to the next two.

    I agree with you about the TARDIS, though it seems we are in a small minority judging from other reactions. It just looks too empty and sterile and lacks hominess as you stated (here in the US we say homey, homely means ugly, so you could say it is that. LOL) I'm hoping Donna's "accident" leads to chance for a new design when it repairs itself... or at least when Ncuti takes over.

    Just letting you know, since you're in it, that the last 11 seconds of MoochTV's Star Beast compilation is pretty anti-trans. It's post-credits so most people missed it.

  • @Longshanks1690

    After so many months of hype, buildup and anticipation, this episode was very… ok! David and Catherine were seamless in returning to their roles, obviously, same with Jacqueline King as Sylvia and even Shaun's actor, for the little he was given. UNIT wheelchair lady was cool, albeit kinda OP Imao. I also like the new UNIT uniforms but I do miss the berets. The new TARDIS is also breathtaking, I just love it. But the writing for the general story was just very weak, and the sonic screwdriver has become insanely OP, you cannot just magic forcefields to get out of a fight. The meep was actually a neat twist villain but the bit wore off after the first scene and it quickly grew tiresome. The directing/action was... fine, but nothing to write home about. The resolution for the metacrisis was insanely contrived, and Rose was just unbearably cringe. Also, why was Sylvia the only person reacting normally to the prospect of Donna’s death? The Doctor just did not seem to care that he could be causing Donna to remember despite stressing the possibility earlier so what gives? Very strange decisions all around. It was decent and I liked it well enough overall but for the first 60th special, it could have been a helluva lot better and if RTD’s name wasn’t on it, I don’t think most people would be able tell it wasn’t a Chibnall era episode.

  • @majkus

    @majkus

    7 ай бұрын

    Yeah, the new sonic abilities are short-sighted. It's just one more thing that future writers will have to ignore or else explain why it cannot be used (it was already being overloaded with abilities like scanning and general computation). Like the original Star Trek transporter, which was cheap and convenient for getting a story launched quickly, but then forced episode after episode in which the communicators were stolen, or there was a magic force that prevented communication/transportation, etc. The screwdriver is at its best when it is used to get past (most) physical barriers, and the 'psychic paper' for getting past uncooperative social barriers. Beyond that, it is a perilous story device. From season one episode one, it was clear that RTD was much better at setting up perils and problems than he was at giving convincing resolutions, which were often too quick and convenient, like the metacrisis in this episode.

    Minor nitpick. It would’ve been better if Rose was the one who got meeps pronouns wrong to show we all slip up. A bit like how Bill who’s queer got caught out by assuming those Roman soldiers sexuality. The doctors been travelling centuries and met countless species, he’d have more of an idea on how different aliens identify. But little scenes like this are a great example of how dw approaches sensitive topics in a casual way.
