    Each one was a very deliberately jaundiced account of how each of these companions met their end. Of course, the toymaker avoided the mitigating circumstances and focused on the tragedy. Amy died of old age, but she died after having lived and married, and had a child and became an author. Clara died to protect somebody else and for all we know is still floating through space in her own TARDIS. Bill is living another existence as water. But I don't have an explanation that contradicts what happened to the flux. Regardless, this shows the inhumanity of the toy maker. He knows every single tail cuts the doctor to the core to make matters worse is the first time that Donna is learning of his history with these women.

    The entire point that the Toymaker was illustrating, is that every one of the companions died 'Because' of their association with The Doctor. With every person, The Doctor immediately tries to justify what happened to them, and how they are "ok", even though they are all dead. Which is why the Toymaker switches accents and yells "Well that's alright then". He is pointing out how The Doctor is shifting the blame off of himself.

    Another fun interpretation that people on r/gallifrey bring up is that the Toymaker is trash talking the Doctor here for LOSING his companions Because to the Toymaker, living or dying, traveling or ending, no matter what, is a constant flux (haha) between winning or losing. For him, these situations where the companions of the Doctor died is him losing a "game" since they died, regardless if they died happy or not. Either way, it's a fascinating angle to think about and shows us how to the Toymaker, it's really all about playing the game, and winning or losing

    Until the Doctor and notDonna talked the Flux, I just assumed that it was restored. Because Azure talked about rewinding time and watching the Flux over and over. I somehow headcannoned that they did rewind time but before the Flux could happen again, Time (the one who looked like 13th with a dark coat) killed her. Because otherwise, how could 13th just randomly go on new adventures without even talking about half of the universe just being destroyed? Surely she wouldn't. I get that RTD wants to be a goody-goody and acknowledge Chibnal's work but he this would have been so easy to retcon. And it should have been if he doesn't want 13th to look more a psychopath than she already did in some previous episodes.

    I love that ba-dah-dah-dah-dah... So, so menacing. "So that's alright then!" Murray Gold is such a damn genius. Also happy that he is referencing some Segun Akinola tracks when appropriate in the storyline, the Flux theme is sort of alluded to here, and the same happens in Wild Blue Yonder (in a FAR subtler way, but it was still really really cool).

    That was strong... Thats the tragedy of companions of the Moffat's era - they all died... Yeah, they kinda made the best of it (with Amy living a full life with Rory, having a family, or Clara traveling the stars, or Bill, changing her form of life and traveling with her partner), but still it doesn't mean that the Doctor could let it go without pain.

    While I'm not sure if it's really Amy or Bill's playing (the start sounds like the counter-melody of A Madman With A Box to me, really), it is heart-wrenching hearing such a warm and jovial theme like Clara's be driven down and unable to finish its happy dance. Good touch from Gold. I would say it seems Bill and Amy are more underscored by musical 'textures' related to them rather than their personal themes.

  • @OswinPond

    @OswinPond

    Amy's theme is really obvious at 0:11. It's the first notes of her theme played with similar choirs. Her adult theme tho, not her childhood theme (Amy has 2 themes) Bill I recognized it from the first note, it's straight up from series 10 type of orchestration, but I agree I don't recognize the leitmotif itself in the notes, just the S10 musical texture. Clara is the most obvious one.

    @@OswinPond Okay, the first three notes are definitely there, does the same sorta thing as Clara's theme where the last note lands 'incorrectly'. That's been pretty standard for the 60th specials scoring. Really, really subtle motifs or motifs landing differently. Wonder if that was a Gold decision or an RTD decision.

    I kinda see why Clara's was the only theme to come out properly in this. Bill's wasn't super iconic as it didn't play much and Amy's theme was always more of a choir so it's harder to notice the notes clearly. However, Clara's theme was always just a few notes of a very consistent rythmn and due to how much it got played with Clara, you recognise it way more.

Compared with Moffat straight up offing everyone from the Ponds (Amy, Rory & River), Clara (and her various other lives), Nardole, Bill and the inhabitants of Christmas Town on Trenzelore, he was pretty brutal with 11 and 12's companions.

    I kind of agree. I like subtly in the themes because I don’t need it to be blaring like “oh my god remember this music you loved?!?!” But I think Clara’s theme was subtle enough and short enough and using Amy’s them and Bills theme like that may have worked better. Over all I think the balance between old and new music worked pretty well in the specials but this is one area they could’ve done more with.
