You've probably noticed how completely different these two specials are. That's the beauty of this show, they really throw a lot of different genres in there. It might sound distracting, but actually it's the opposite. It keeps the show fresh, and also it does mean that when you get a personal dud, you know it's a one off and you'll soon get a personal favorite. I say personal, because one persons dud is often another's favorite.

The TARDIS: the in-universe explanation is that it's meant to have a device called a Chameleon Circuit that changes it's outside appearance to blend into wherever it lands. The first doctor landed it in the 1960s where it assumed the shell of a Police Box - a common sight on street corners in London before walkie talkies were invented. Then the circuit broke. The shell got stuck as a police box. The doctor has attempted to fix it twice but didn't like it being other things so he reverted it back again. Also, yes: it's sentient in a way. There is a consciousness inside it but it can't communicate directly, but it does often drop them where they need to be to help out in a life and death situation.

It's conscious, and doesn't really see the flow of time the same humans do. A fun point about that was how, paraphrasing, Tardis one time it was able to speak, mentioned how there is this very bittersweet sentence in English, "nice to meet you". Others thought Tardis meant "goodbye". I think about that bit more often than I perhaps should.

TARDIS - Time And Relative Dimension In Space I love almost everything about this episode. The best way to describe it is that it FEELS like Doctor Who, and that may sound obvious since it's the name of the show, but what I mean is, it's a fun sci fi adventure, relatively simple, yet weird (and disturbing) premise, but it takes that premise, be a little bit scary with frightening monsters, have great character work, and does everything it can to deliver just, be Doctor Who. One thing that I love, and won't go too much into detail for you personally, is the characterization of the 14th Doctor. There are actually quite a bit of subtle differences between David Tennant's portrayal of the 14th Doctor, compared to his portrayal of the 10th Doctor, it's familiar yet different, and as usual The Doctor & Donna bounce off perfectly. 10 & Donna was always one of my favorite Doctor and companion combos and 14 & Donna still proves it. Also if you're wondering, the flux was something that happened in the previous doctor's era. I am definitely excited for the final special to wrap this 60th anniversary up, and if the 15th Doctor's era is ANYTHING like this second special right here, then I have complete faith in the show. Also RIP Bernard Cribbins, the man who plays Wilf (Donna's grandpa), he died last year. This special was the last thing he filmed before death.

The Doctor and Donna's chemistry is what I think made it so easy to get immersed despite not having seen anything prior to this first and second special, so I can understand why they would be your favorite combos, and I'm sure I'll understand even more once I watch the revival. I was wondering about the flux, I'm also wondering why the doctor doesn't know where he's from but I'm sure I'll find out more about both, in time. Thanks for the info!

@@BrainOnBinge Yeah - all of that why the Doctor doesn't know where he's from really, and the Flux is a kinda controversial thing from the previous Doctor that just happened. (I guess, the Flux is less controversial, but that was basically the big destructive enemy from the previous whole season) But, you know, when the series started 60 years ago we didn't know anything about the Doctor then either, except that he was an alien time traveler - the Doctor's home planet (Gallifrey, since it came up in Wild Blue Yonder) wasn't named until 11 years in.

To add to what others have said about "the phone box" is because while they wanted to have it able to easily blend into the scenery no matter where they went in time and space, that was just not possible with the special effects in the 60's so they instead decided to have it be "broken" and stuck in the form of the 1940's police box it was disguised as in the pilot. 40 years later when the reboot started, even though they could have fixed it finally with modern special effects, they chose not to. Also, fun fact it was actually his half-human granddaughter Susan Foreman who told us the story and the name of "TARDIS" the first time, not him.

Damn, I wasn't expecting another video so soon, but I'm very happy with it! Just to answer some of your question that I think it's ok to talk about. The TARDIS is alive and has her own conscious and even talk to the Doctor at times. TARDIS means Time And Relative Dimension In Space and the reason of it being a police phone box thing is because the device that changes her shape it's broken AND the Doctor actually likes it that way. One thing that I also want to say is that after the holiday special, we are getting a new season 1. It's like "hey, that's Disney's Doctor Who now". The events of the other series are still somewhat important, but they will do it in a way to make it friendly for new viewers since we will get a new Doctor and a new companion, a lot of known things from old viewers will be explained for the new ones. You still should watch the 2005 series, 100%, just because it's amazing, but keep in mind that the new season will be made for new people to join the fandom. Also, you haven't seen Star Wars? It's great, you should watch it.

"Why a phone box?" When a TARDIS lands somewhere it scans its surroundings and camouflages itself by taking on an outer shape that would make the most sense in its surroundings. Could be a tree, a house, or even a massive spaceship if that would make sense. It also in general gently pushes at people's minds to sway them away from noticing its presence. The Doctor's TARDIS is a little broken. It camouflaged itself as a police box then got stuck like that.

On science in Doctor Who, it's philosophically science fiction, in the sense that everything is assumed to have a scientific explanation - so magic doesn't exist. Arthur C Clarke wrote the introduction to the book The Science of Doctor Who and quoted his earlier maxim “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” as justification for Doctor Who being science fiction. For some, science fiction needs to devote time to making its science seem plausible and explaining it, and sometimes those people will decide it is important to categorise things like Doctor Who as "science fantasy" or "not real science fiction". Personally, I don't see the point as fiction based on plausible extrapolation (aka hard science fiction) is a niche area (mainly in print) and lots of things that are supposedly "proper science fiction" gloss over the issues with faster than light travel (or interstellar travel in general), artificial gravity and other things - or introduce pseudoscience like psychic powers. But it can be a clue to the storytelling - in Doctor Who the ideas serve the story and the characters. And that, combined with the format needing concise storytelling, means detailing and explaining the "science" is not a priority.

  • @BrainOnBinge

    @BrainOnBinge

Thank you for that info, I was wondering about this! I actually like that the science hasn't been overly explained, it leaves more room for me to invest myself in the characters, plot and storytelling vs "how it works"

TARDIS: Time And Relative Dimension(s?) In Space. That interior (and room beyond it) is technially another dimension to the outside. Back before they had police radios, London Metropolitan police had Police Boxes on their grid like streets. Phone behind the front notice. Folding desk & chair inside. Light on top to flash for incoming calls or stays on for the arrested to be transferred to a van. Tardis has a 'Chameleon' circuit. Lands on a 1963 street corner, turns into the box. Bang! Circuit blows. It also has a psychic transmitter. Tells people not to notice it & provides translation for character & viewers. "But you could whistle or snap your fingers" Tardis is sentient, partly biological, & is bonded with the Doctor. It's also a thrillseeker😂.

For the 50th anniversary (God, 10 years ago now), the BBC commissioned a special one off drama documentary (written by one of the NuWho writers), which was called, “An Adventure in Space and Time.” It showed how Doctor Who was created back in 1963. At that time, the head of the BBC Drama department, a Canadian called Sydney Newman, wanted a new family show that would teach youngsters about real up to date science fiction concepts as well as teaching them about real historic events, and Doctor Who was born! The show was called that because the audience never really learnt much about the Doctor or where he came from for the first six years, so early on you’d have one of the companions say something like, “He’s called the Doctor? But who is he? Doctor Who?” Note, the “Who” bit is not his surname, lol. This drama documentary will show you how the 1st Doctor and his grand daughter/other companions were cast, as well as how a BBC designer came up with the TARDIS interior. It also sheds light on how Verity Lambert, the first Doctor Who producer (and the first ever female BBC producer at that time), was treated by the then mostly male dominated workforce at the BBC, and how she strived to overcome prejudice in that position in that organisation! It also delved into the format of the show, where ‘The Doctor’ was a mysterious character who travelled through time and space with his grand daughter Susan, in a time machine that he could not control or steer, so he didn’t know where it was going to land or in what time period, whether that was on Earth or on an alien planet. If you can find this drama documentary in full on KZread or from the BBC, please watch it, as I think it will really interest you in how TV was made back then! Oh, one other thing, if you do watch it, make sure you see it after you’ve seen episode 6 of the 1st season of NuWho, so it won’t spoil the surprise for you! Other non spoiler info: In the first 6 years of the show, each season could comprise a number of 7, 8, 9 or 10 stories, lasting up to 40 episodes (or 40 weeks of each year.) From 1970 till 1985, these were cut down to a more manageable (on average) 6 stories, usually comprising 26 episodes (or 26 weeks of each year.) Each story was divided up into 25 minute episodes and stories could use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 or 12 episodes to complete that story, but each episode always ended on a cliffhanger to get the audience to tune back in the following week! Granted, some stories were way over length, episode wise, but it was usually considered by the many producers of classic Who that 4 episodes was the right number to tell a good story! When the show came back in 2005, it was decided to make most of the stories single 50 minute episodes, with the occasional 2 parter (two 50 minute episodes), should the story length warrant it.

The TARDIS is both sentient and alive. Also, the TARDIS is a phone box because it has a "chameleon circuit" which disguises the outside as a house or phone box or tree or rock to help it blend in with it's surroundings. The TARDIS landed in the 60s early on in the show and broke, getting stuck as a Police Box. It's later implied the Doctor didn't fix it because he liked the phone box exterior. The TARDIS can disguise itself as anything thanks to the chameleon circuit, but that broke before the 1st episode in London 1963. So it is stuck in the last form it took, a 1960s Police Call Box. Its very iconic as those boxes were phased out in the 1970s and for the last 50 years they have been missing from Briitsh streets and people's only experience of one is the TARDIS.

Police phone boxes were common when the show started. And while the TARDIS has the ability to change how it looks, the show runners didn't want to waste money on that, so it was written in the story that the Chameleon Circuit was broken. In other words: the TARDIS was stuck in the form of a police box. Now it is just so iconic, they no longer really want to change it. And yes, the TARDIS is sentient.

It is difficult to find, as it’s been removed by BBC, but if you can find it, I recommend watching the pilot episode of doctor who from 1963, called “an unearthly child”. It’s only about 20 minutes and gives you background on the doctor and the TARDIS (and what T.A.R.D.I.S stands for). you are definitely better off watching the 2005 restart but it’s still the same universe, character, and history as that 1963 show.

I hope you stick around and watch the series leading up to this :) There's a lot to learn which will definitely help with the events happening in these specials, but it does also help that the 60th anniversary does help touch on the subject for new people coming into the show, because now that it's on Disney+, we'll start getting viewers from that platform who, like you have never watched Doctor Who! Welcome to the fandom and if you react to the revival series as people are calling it, (2005-Present) I'll definitely look forward to them :) No pressure if you don't want to react, it's a lot haha

You've gotten A LOT of answers about the Doctor's longest running companion. Looking forward to seeing what you make of the third special - it's my favourite of the bunch and really, I think, shows off what Doctor Who does really, really well when it's at its best; a fantastic blend of humour, drama and horror.

I absolutely adored this one. I don't think Doctor Who should do this style of episode all the time, but when it strays into this sort of minimalist storytelling with a heavy focus on just actors performing it tends to be my favourite of the set of episodes it's in. That "Disney" look you mentioned - This might be due to Phil Sims being the production director on these episodes (and the upcoming season), who's previous credits include being an art director on MCU films such as Guardians on the Galaxy. Though a lot of sci-fi has had a sort of 'ipod' feel for a decade or so now. The future - as depicted on film and television - is currently consumer tech minimalism. And the end of this episode is the final scene Bernard Cribbins - who played Wilf on this show - ever filmed. He passed away around two months after shooting on the episode wrapped.

Yeah, see, the TARDIS has something called a chameleon circuit that would change the outside of the TARDIS to look like whatever it needed to look like to blend in with her surroundings. And then, he once (60 years ago) landed in 1960's London. The TARDIS changed itself into a police box, which used to be common back in those days in the UK, but then the circuit broke and it got stuck like that. And the Doctor can't exactly go home and get a new circuit, but at this point, they don't want to because they've grown to like the blue box look.

The continuity and story of NuWho is already a lot to catch up on without even considering the Classic series, so please pay no mind to the less patient minority of folks in the comments criticising you for not knowing certain words, or not wanting to go back to the 60s episodes first…! Personally, as someone who was a toddler when the revival started, NuWho is all I’ve known but it’s some of the best storytelling I’ve seen and home to a LOT of my favourite characters of all time. Obviously since it’s been running since ‘05, nearly twenty years in, it has a huge fandom of its own and I can’t wait to see you explore! The graphics don’t begin to touch what you see here for quite a bit sadly, but the budget has been infamously low since the show’s debut so it is considered part of the charm😁😁 Doctor Who’s practical FX, however, are continuously awesome!

The Doctor: (enthusiastically) "Every time the TARDIS materializes in a a new location, within the first nanosecond of landing, it analyses its surroundings, calculates a 12-dimensional data map of everything within a 1000-mile radius, and determines which outer shell would blend in best with the environment!" - pauses with mixed emotions - and then it disguises itself as a police telephone box from 1963 . . . It's probably a bit of a fault, actually." Back in the now Classic era, The Doctor did actually demonstrate the process of manually changing the exterior appearance and keyed in the whole process at the TARDIS console - which was to change the exterior shell into a pyramid - flipped the control to execute the change, and we all watched the screen on the console as the chameleon circuit 'considered' the alteration for a few seconds. Then the pyramid disappeared and was replaced by the London police box. However, one has to admit that when one is serious complications, being chased by something that is hideous . . . or at least unmanageably perilous - for instance, in the Stone Age - it's can be very useful to aim for something that is instantly recognizable and not have to play 'Hunt the right boulder'!

Time And Relative Dimensions In Space or, A TARDIS, and it looks like a 1960's police call box after a time on earth when it's "chameleon circuit" (which hides the craft in plain sight where or whenever they land) broke in the 1960's, so even though they travel in both time and space, they continued to look like the police box. The circuit has been repaired a few times now but both The Doctor and The TARDIS prefer the phone box look. So now no matter how odd it looks it mainly stays where it lands now based on it being too unwieldy and folks being to lazy to get a forklift. BTW a police call box was where you could call police from (most homes did not have phones in 60's UK) Police constables walked beats, no cars, so if they had to apprehend more than one suspect they could throw one in a nearby police box and lock it and continued the chase. they could also then call their station and have a wagon sent to retrieve the baddies. so kinda like mini police stations. and yes...The TARDIS is sentient. My Doctor is 4 My Master is Delgado, and my companion is Sarah Jane.
