Oh one day...[I'd like to meet an alien that was not immune to bullets] you could just FEEL her channeling that line. God i love Kate.
It's pretty incredible that I've already gotten so attached to Ruby and 15th after basically one season. Like, when she said "I love you" and left the Doctor, I just broke down in tears

Walkies? I would call it zoomies!
I teared up too when Ruby met her mom and left at the end, but when they showed photos of her mother, it was underwhelming. It didn't meet my expectations; I felt like, 'Oh, um, okay, that's her.'

Like most things, it’s no weirder than “Love & Monsters.”
Only wish he had said "Everybody lives!" When it was undone.
I'm a bit split on this finale. On the one hand, I did like that Ruby's parents were actually just normal humans, but on the the other hand, it seems like a bit of a cop out. I mean, I can buy the bit about Sutekh only believing her mum was important because Ruby and the Doctor believed as much... But, we were shown certain elements throughout the entire season that have to do with Ruby's very nature or origins (things like the snow, the carol song, the Doctor's memory of that night changing etc), which were meant to lead us to believe that she wasn't exactly a normal human. They were deliberate scriptwriting choices that made us think she was special.. And those things were never actually explained, which is a bit disappointing. We did get a few mentions of 73 Yards, more than I was expecting tbh, but they didn't exactly make this better, since again, it wasn't actually explained or important to the overall mystery. Like, it's cool that the TARDIS perception filter apparently works from that same distance, and nice touch that Ruby sort-of remembers what happened to her in the alternate timeline, but it wasn't actually important and didn't lead to anything in the end. I thought the Memory TARDIS being used and explained some more was very cool, and I also liked the idea of Sutekh latching onto the TARDIS all the way back in the 4th Doctor's era and being around for this entire time (though, it does raise a lot of questions about how he survived all this time and why he waited so long lol - like yeah, the Time War, and also 4.5 Billion years in the confession dial, 900 years on Trenzalore, decades on Earth and Darillium, and thousands of years of other adventures; including the TARDIS being destroyed a few times, going outside the universe etc). However, I do wish the solution in the end, was a bit better than just... Dragging Sutekh through the time vortex with a bit of rope. Like, yeah, I'm not really sure how or why that even worked lol. I don't have a problem with it being silly solution, as it is DW after all.. But I mean, in the internal logic of the show itself, what even made the Doctor realise that it would work? Or, if he knew all along that it could, why did he need to wait so long until so many planets were destroyed before trying it? It seemed like a bit of a last-minute solution.. Reminded me of the Last of the Time Lords ending, which I think we all know is considered RTD's worse finale for a reason. It just seems like whenever RTD gives us very high stakes, he forgets to think of a way out and consider an actual solution until the very last second, and then there's not enough screen time left to actually construct one that makes sense within the narrative, so he just finds the quickest easy fix he can and sticks with it. In this case, it was basically all just reset.. No one actually died while fighting the god of death. It makes the Toymaker and Maestro actually arguably scarier than Sutekh imo. Also, I liked the idea of an ending scene with the Doctor and Ruby, but honestly, the season wasn't long enough and didn't give us enough of them together, for me to buy that they have such a deep, unbreakable bond. It made their goodbye feel a bit overdramatic, but IDK.. maybe it's just me. I am happy that Ruby is coming back for S2, cause I do like Millie and her dynamic and chemistry with Ncuti, I just could have honestly done without the scene of them saying goodbye, or maybe replaced it with a more lighthearted one where they just decide that Ruby should have a break and stay with her family for a while. Basically, I loved the apocalyptic vibe of the episode, seeing the universe destroyed again was very reminiscent of Flux, but in a very cool way.. I liked a lot of the character moments we got (especially the sequence with Mel, the Doctor's reaction to the death wave and his scene with the random kind lady), the acting and emotional stakes.. But the story itself in terms of the mystery and overall structure, was a bit of a let down sadly.

Gosh yes, exactly. One of my biggest pet peeves in narrative are red herrings/cop outs like this. You build up and imply stuff, your audience gets excited... only to receive a slap in the face. Every theorycrafting or whatever, just... gone. A flatness is all that's left. Basically when it feels like an author disrespects their own story it upsets me. Should I just no expect anything or get excited about whatever mysteries Dr. Who brings to the table now??? It leaves that sort of impression. But I do feel this season, this Doc, the greatest strength are the emotional moments and beats. It's really done those well (though it could stand to space it out more and not oversaturate the mood of the plot). And I really love Ruby character and her and the Doc, the dynamic is great! Though I do ALSO agree the depth of their care for one another doesn't feel quite earned because I feel like we didn't get enough time with them as well. But yeah not a hater of the season, have actually mostly enjoyed it! But it for sure has some real rough spots

@@benjamindavis4974 I mean, it's possible.. But given RTD's comments regarding Ray's linage in Star Wars, I kinda doubt it. I think he really did just want to tell a story about the significance we give to these mysteries, while also touching on the importance of memory, how thoughts can become reality, and how normal, everyday people can be just as important (these are all themes that he's touched on before in RTD1 as well). Which, I get and it is a nice message, I just wish he would have found a way to tell it without leaving so many plot holes and unanswered questions behind lol.

Two scenarios: a) Sutekh was cloned (so one copy is still clinging to 14's Tardis); b) Sutekh attached himself to 15's Tardis, knowing that 14 was retiring and would, at most, be revisiting places he's already been to, whereas 15 would be out and about, therefore offering Sutekh more opportunities to plant acolytes

When I tell you this episode broke me, I mean it *broke* me. On a pure story basis it wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever seen, though I did think it was quite good (because the whole point was driving home that these stories have significance because we give them significance - it was beautiful). But between my love for Ncuti’s doctor and Ruby, and some personal real life stuff, this episode did absolutely destroy me 😭🥹

Think about this, we either love this story or don’t. So it can be the greatest story ever told, that somehow in the future becomes a legend, just like Ruby’s mom, or if you hate it then it becomes silence like death. Only we give it significance or death. The same is for Ruby’s mom. Sutekhwas looking for family and wanted Ruby’s mom to be one of his pantheon that he could destroy on top of destroying the world. At least that is my thoughts.
They leave. Because they should or because they find someone else. And some of them, some of them... forget me. I suppose in the end, they break my heart.

I think they made the right decision in having Ruby's mum just a normal person rather than a god, or the impossible girl like Clara. At least as well we got some answers to the buildup, even if not totally liked. I do think though that the series suffered from being only 8 episodes, it seems far too early for us to see Goodbye to Ruby, even if we do see her next season. To me I enjoyed the episode more 2nd time out compared to the first time.

18:04 I think you must be onto something I didn’t get it at first but now I do ,no wonder he’s the timeless child he’s been the child of life all along long before he was dropped from the wormhole and now he’s the god of life this must be the true power of the timeless child because the god of life means the doctor having the power of regeneration ,having endless lives. I liked this much more on a second viewing. Kind of ruined the first one hoping constsntly for Susan and Mrs Flood reveals as opposed to what was actually happening on screen. My fave Mel appearence by far. Loved them beating a god with a whistle and a bungee rope. So brilliantly Dr Who in its silliness. And the reunion was so raw and Mrs Flood ending it like that...nice.
I really think it was stupid to offer Susan Triad a job. What they should have offered her is a contract. She owns a tech company, after all, and is a computer genius herself; she's already supplied them with technology (we know that from The Giggle); so why not use that resource? Obviously in a restricted way, but it's not fundamentally different from companies in the real world doing classified work for defense ministries etc.

most criticisms i've seen of this ending make little sense, the entire season has been about perception and the whole memory = time thing, and Sutekh achieved godhood the same way Rose Tyler did, which connects with that. With all of that in mind, it makes perfect sense that an ordinary woman being perceived as important is enough to make her invisible to him AND enough to make the memory of that day create both snowfall and music. It’s not a sudden twist, it’s been built up from the start pretty clearly. And yeah, RTD said we'd get definitive proof 15's TARDIS was the original, and here it is. Yeah Sutekh would have seen himself during events like Day of the Doctor, but there's no reason to think a copy of the TARDIS like the one 14 got would get an extra death god too
I've watched Dr Who for 50 years (The Time Warrior, 1974, was my first) and I love it all for the ride. Some make the mistake of worrying about what they would have liked to have happen instead, or plot devices they didn't care for. That's missing the point. Enjoy the ride, good and bad for what it is or don't and get a life elsewhere. For me, season, well, I think of it as season 40 because it directly references season 13 (1975-76) so how could it not be, has been a super season. Emotion, drama and a pile of nonsense. What's not to like.

Well I'm back with my theories. We know Ruby's story is not done. Though I do think RTD dropped the ball in communicating that leaving people frustrated. MY takeaways... Ruby herself has a perception filter as hinted in dialogue. Why did the Doctor not want Ruby to talk to her mother (out of character). Is she really Ruby's mother or is a plot a foot. Is Ruby's father related ot Mad Jack (Ap Gwilliam (of William) Her father's name is William. With the reveal that 73 yards is the range of a perception filter when it becomes more apparent that old Ruby (Jack's Herald) wasn't telling people terrible things, she was showing them terrible things, they all look directly at Ruby before they freak out. Does standing at the very edge of the perception filter cause it's effect to sort of glitch and you see what's really real? Finding Ruby's mother was far too easy, and none of Maestro or Sutekh's dialogue work if she is just some random teen mom. For a few scenes I was almost convinced UNIT set up a fake mom just to make Ruby stop looking for now
This episode
I don’t think that’s truly the end of Sutekh, but I don’t want them bringing him back for a very long time. What makes villains like that special is that they rarely strike, but when they do, the stakes are super high. So maybe they’ll bring him back in another 40 years.

This. I actually bothered to watch Pyramids of Mars as I was expecting this huge showdown where they’d need everything they can get to help trap him again. But he was defeated quickly in one episode… I really wish the battle was split into several parts, I think it could have helped a lot. We didn’t even get much of the villain at all last episode before this.
22:04 I think "underwhelmed" is a good way to describe my feelings on the episode at the moment. Well, maybe more negative than that. It's not a terrible episode, really, but Sutekh was defeated fairly quickly and pretty much everything about Ruby's mom was nonsensical. She's so important that Sutekh was obsessed with her identity. But she's also just a random person. Her identity was hidden from the Doctor in 2004, from UNIT in 2024, and from Sutekh. But then they find her just-like-that in this episode. She gave Ruby her name by pointing at the signpost, but no one saw her do that (except the Doctor, who did not name her). The social workers made their own decision to name the baby after the road. They're shown the snow ability several times including in this two-parter. But if Ruby and her mom are both normal humans then where does that come from?
