Can't really spot in gymnastics, you're likely to take a foot to the face. That's what the mats are for. I LOVED the uneven bars when I was in gymnastics!
I hurt myself pretty badly jumping off a cliff into water. I watched several people do it and figured I could too. My form was perfect... until I freaked out because it felt like I had been falling forever. Apparently my panic occurred right before I hit the water and I had leaned backwards, landing square on my back. Someone dove in after me because they realized I was probably in trouble and they were right. The impact completely stunned me. I couldn't move or breathe or anything. They pulled me to the surface and helped me to shore. I was bleeding from lacerations on my back from the sheer force of hitting the water from that height and the bruising was extensive. All I could think while laying on the shore trying to breathe was that I finally had an answer for my parents... if everyone else jumped off a cliff, I would too.

@@theknightradiant2 True. I think it was a good thing that I couldn't breathe for a minute after the impact because otherwise I probably would have gasped and inhaled a ton of water. *Basically I got the wind knocked out of me, a term for when the diaphragm is temporarily paralyzed restricting the ability to breathe (caused by heavy impact to the abdomen or back).

For the gymnast in the second video. You’re not allowed to have a coach spot at a competition, it’s a serious deduction. As well as most (99%) of coaches won’t allow a gymnast to compete a skill they cannot consistently do. That’s also why they have a safety mat ready to push in, to make it just a bit safer.
@OogaChaka
8 ай бұрын
Ok, so what we saw was actually the mat person doing a good job at anticipating the fall? Like, the mat started moving in place before I realized, watching, that something had gone wrong.
0:39 she had spotters if you look you can see that the larger landing mat got moved so that her whole body would land on it rather than only the lower part of the body. In bar gymnastics this is how spotting goes there is not usually a spotter right next to the bar because if they try to directly catch someone who has this much momentum the spotters would almost certainly get injured aswell then you have 2 injured people to deal with
@SandraNLN
Жыл бұрын
My thought exactly. If that mat hadn't been shoved under her, it would have been way worse especially for her neck. The spotter did their job, and I'm sure that gymnast was fine after that, maybe some soreness.

I would also like to add that it seems like they are in the middle of competition. Spotters are not allowed to push this round mat on bars during competitions. He did all he could which was pushing the larger landing mat under her.

That grandpa doing a flip off the swing was probably walking home, wanted to be a child again, and succeeded in the vibe check.
My mother and step-father thought I had a ganglion cyst for the longest time, they'd try to break it by my smashing books against my hand, and my step-father once actually tried to take a needle to me. Luckily my friend at the time's uncle, who is a doctor, took a look at it and realized pretty quick that it was a tumor and I got it surgically removed.

my friend when he was like 3 he got so many concussions which eventually led to a personality change. the video with the guy who hit himself with a bat reminded me of that.
The first one brought back traumatizing memories for me. Long story short, my neighbors got a zip line in their backyard and wanted me to go first as I was the oldest of their children and my siblings, and something happened where I gained a ton of speed really fast, and the devices that were supposed to slow and stop you didn’t work, and when I hit the end I flipped back onto my neck. I was lucky not to be paralyzed or worse. The weirdest thing was (besides my neck being sore) my toes really hurt after the initial pain wore off. Like REALLY hurt for like weeks, even though I landed elsewhere. The top suggestion was that my toes hit the tree that the zip line was hooked up to at the end. Suggestions on why my toes were the main source of pain would be appreciated!

Probably not correct but when I swing my arms around a lot my hands start to hurt a bit so maybe it was something to do with the momentum of the zipline?
I've torn my ACL about a month back and let me tell you one thing, "It's an injury you don't want if you like sports". With proper treatment, a torn ACL can heal in 4-5 months(that's an estimate btw) maybe more depending on how badly it was torn and how much you're treating it. My advice to prevent any ACL injury is to do warm-ups before playing certain sports. Without doing warm-ups, your body doesn't understand what to do in certain situations and that can lead to injuries like a torn ACL.

I've torn both my acls on separate occasions. The good news: you can get all the way back with a good reconstruction surgery and PT. The bad news? It's a full year revovery for sports usually, and it may be 2 until it feels 100%.
@ShesAaRebel
Жыл бұрын
I have a friend who is a sports therapist, and she told me that how she treats ACL injuries, is to build up the quad muscles. If those are strong enough, you don't need to worry about your ACL being in the same condition is was before your injury. It's how she gets them back to being able to at least continue to train in their sport, so they can return to competition faster. Physical therapists goal is to make sure the person is no longer in pain. Spots therapists goal is to get the person back to competitive level health. It's really interesting to learn how they can take it a step further.
@karlaparac7370
Жыл бұрын
Exactly that. Totally agree with you. I’m studying to become a PT and we even learned that for optimal recovery and being full on ready to go back to all activities it can even take up to a year to recover from a torn ACL.
I've done the pop-its under the toilet seat gag. I did it late one night, knowing my husband would be up before me to use the bathroom. Didn't count on my 7 year old getting up to use the bathroom at 3 am. She was so scared she broke the toilet, and came to us apologizing and repeating "I just don't know how this happened!"
1:10 We have some of those poppers left over from a 4th of July celebration. Last month I accidentally dropped one on the floor and stepped on it, setting it off. I was barefoot. I heard the pop but barely felt a thing, and the sole of my foot was 100% undamaged.
When I was in highschool I had a football hit me in the temple without bouncing first! So I can attest to how much pain that guy would be in! Plus I ended up with a concussion so that was fun!

as a gymnast, i can say the fall at 0:35 hurts pretty bad and i've know people that have gotten whiplash from it. it's very likely to fall like that especially when first learning a jaeger (the skill she was doing). she did have a "spotter" there, but if she was in a routine (which it looked like she might have been), it's a big deduction to have a coach touch you at all in a routine. letting her fall was probably the safest and smartest option, less deduction and lower risk of breaking bones. the coach probably would have gotten hurt if he were to try and catch her, and it could have led to her getting a worse injury for the gymnast. also, gymnasts are trained on how to fall out of more dangerous and difficult skills, and she's probably fallen like that at least a dozen times.

Fortunately I got it removed a few years back and God it was so nice not worrying about the pain.
6:08 I did one of those. It tripped me, and I landed directly on my right knee on the corner of the padding to the side of the trampoline. Apparently there is metal underneath the padding because it was paaiiinful. I didn't get a bruise, but it hurt when I pressed on my knee for the next couple months. That was in March. 6:38 at least in softball they tell us to never duck or move if the ball is coming for us. That’s because if you get hit you get to walk to the base, and if you’re too hurt to play they can throw in a runner to take your place.
The kid with the bat killed me. 😂
5:27 The guy "trying to stay out of the shot" was a reflection of the one taking the video we're watching, lol.
When it comes to medical videos.., Doctor Mike is simply the best. 🙏 🙏 🙏

Flipped my quad a number of years ago and tore basically all of the CL's in ny knee. Only ligament that wasnt a grade 3 tear was my lcl. Broke my tibial plateau, fractured my patella, damaged my medial miniscus, subluxed my hip which caused a 5mm tear in my labrum. Had surgery to replace my ACL, but because I was 100% NWB for almost 4 months right after the accident to prevent displacement of the fractured tibial plateau the accute pain of the hip injury became asymptomatic resulting in heterotopic ossification of the femoral head and acetabulum. The excess bone was like a cheese grater and eventually caused additional damage to the labrum requiring hip surgery to shave off 3mm of bone from the femoral head and 4.5mm from the acetabulum and replacement of the damaged portion of the labrum. Oh and I had a football sized hematoma on my other thigh due to the impact of the left knee driving into my thigh when I hit the ground. Thank god I had on all my riding gear and helmet because there was a deep quarter sized gouge in my helmet right by where my temple was. I possibly could have died. Don't know if it's PTSD or denial because I still don't see it as that bad of an accident, even though it was a traumatic injury and accident.
1:55 that’s a worlds first done by Ryan Williams!!! That dude is insane!!!!!!!
I feel like we haven’t gotten a reaction vid in a while, always fun to see a lighter side to our Doc!

lol i love dr. mike but i can't take him seriously with his glasses so close to his face the hair- YOU'RE THE BEST! LY DR. MIKE
0:43 Dear Dr. Mike, As this may look really cool and hard to attempt/do, I have done this before and because of the fact that you momentum is all on whatever the object you are holding onto, which means whatever movement that vehicle does, that handle bar does, which would make your body do the cool movements that this guy did.
WOW I have never gagged or had an extreme visceral reaction at a video like the one I did when I saw the guy rolling over the ganglion cyst. I've came across the most horrific videos on the internet (straight up gore) and never felt how I felt seeing that cyst being rolled over. Holy cow.
As a person who already has audible, it’s great you should get it
I love listening to Dr.Mike so much that I even listen to his sponsors 😭❤
Dr. Mike!! I was at the HOSA ILC conference in Tennessee and I heard you speak, it was so inspirational so thank you!!! I hope to go into the medical field some day just like you!
The fourth clip is so funny I like how that guy just screams 😂
Thats Rwilly from nitro circus doing those flips. He's a Legend
The reaction at 2:59 😂😂😂😭😂
