As a recovering addict of pain pills (and later much harder things) (but grateful to be 8 years clean n looking forward to 9, 10, 11 and 12+), i almost feel like with some of the things he says (for example; "i went to a...a...a dark place", "some things that happened that stops me from living the kinda life i wanna live" or "i was in a really, really bad place and i vowed to myself i wouldn't do that again") kinda leads me to have a gut feeling there's been a battle with addiction mixed into the journey too. I pray im wrong as ive genuinely loved n appreciated Andrew Luck n his career n all it entails, but it FEELS much like a "rock bottom" kinda moment where he realizes he needs to get away from what he's currently ensnared in to progress in life. But regardless, it's irrelevant, i wish him NOTHING but the absolute best in the days, weeks and years to come whether on the football field or not.

As a two time cancer survivor, who has had 13 surgeries, and chronic issues from all of that stuff, I can totally understand where Andrew Luck is coming from. I cannot relate from the perspective of a professional athlete and having to give up something that you have done your whole life and is your career, but just the pain and chronic issues that come from his injuries is totally relatable. Hopefully, after some time he heals up and gets to some level of normalcy in his physical being. I totally agree with you, it takes a great deal of courage to walk away, and I wish him well in his future life and endeavors.

Far too many sacks are on these QBs. To the average person, Winston was sacked 5 times the other day vs the Browns. Both Winston and Bruce Arians attributed Winston to 2-3 of them. Luck used take on avg, 2.77s to throw, comeback season he made a concerted effort to reduce at 2.44s. That's not to say his OL up until 2018 was perfect, far from it actually. And the only person that holds onto the ball longer than Watson, is MAYBE Tyrod Taylor. Point being, mobile guys are holding onto the ball longer, and it's wearing down their offensive linemen.

The same as David Carr at Houston. Carr was sacked 76 times in his rookie season, an NFL record for most times a quarterback had been sacked in a season. Carr lasted 9 years, mostly as a backup, but being sacked so much in his first 3 years at Houston did him in. Shoulder problems, ankle sprains very similar to Andrew Luck. Carr is considered an NFL bust because he was the #1 draft pick of an expansion team. Guys like him and Luck were out there working, mostly alone without blockers, trying to make it work. That doesn't mean they were busts. It means there wasn't enough talent around them to stand out. "Busts" are guys like Manziel, JaMarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf who squandered their opportunity.

Ball on a tee, perfect analogy dude. I have EDS and have gone through tons of PT for my joints and I can only imagine how difficult it would be for him to be trying to rehab his shoulder, all the while he’s dealing with injuries going on in his abdomen, which seems like it would definitely cause the rehab for the shoulder to slow down. Then he ended up getting a surgery, as you said is already risky, and then basically had to relearn how to throw and he pretty much did that and then seemed to get hurt again and now is in pain again. I totally get it and understand his decision. As you said, it also wouldn’t surprise if he just takes a few years off to get healthy and comes back a brand new Andrew Luck. He’s still just 30, he could definitely have a comeback tour lol the Eagles currently have Josh McCown as backup who’s 40 and came out of retirement also but not from injury.

As someone who has had to cut my playing carrer short, I'm empathize heavily with Luck. I suffered my 10th concussion right. Efore I started my first year of D1 Lacrosse and was advised by specialists to quit for the sake of my brain. Luck is not only feeling pain all day but he will also have doctors in his ear explaining what will happen to his body if he keeps going. Sometime you have to make hard decisions for yourself, even if it goes against what you love, so that you can enjoy more of life. Those that criticize Luck couldn't last a game in a small cleats.

Luck has been playing football for how many years? Most start out in Pop Warner football, so he had essentially been playing for almost 20 years. The older we get our bodies cannot absorb the "punishment" life dishes out, then add the physical violence of the NFL, add onto that the beating Luck's body took playing behind a bad offensive line and the daily pain of trying to perform at an elite level. Few that booed him could tolerate what he went through. His body, his life and his choice, wish him the best.

My mind has suffered injury as well. Most people just don't understand what real pain really is. Because if they did they would not make the idiotic comments as if they knew. I tire these long years of explaining things to people who never these issues. So, to them, they don't exist. That is a major issue in today's society of "if it doesn't affect me I just think you're a "snowflake" ". The snowflake is always the one who utilizes such notions. Good luck to all who battle these issues. Additionally, all companies use you till your scrap, throw you out and replace you after they contributed to your health issues with no consequence.

Wow, what a smart guy to get out at a young age (for other careers) and have the chance to have a life. What is shocking is that more NFL players don't bail while they still have a chance to have a relatively injury-free post NFL life. The hidden time bomb that tics down to near certainty for virtually all NFL players the longer they play: CTE.

I am happy that Andrew Luck focused on his long term health as opposed to risking further injuries that will impact his life later on. I hope he has the strength to pick up his kids. After all when dealing with life, the little things matter.

Irsay could sell the team to someone who actually cares about football and maybe Luck wouldnt have been hurt so bad. Maybe they would have focused on protecting him. Then again Luck was a beast and didnt care to run and not slide out of a tackle. None the less as a 30 year colts fan I think Irsay needs to pass the torch or get off the drugs. Great video man. Healthcare worker to Dr. Much respect and I think this is the most informative video I've seen.

The problem is that most of blue collar workers will never make enough to simply “step away” as you put it for our general health when the food on the table and roof over our heads is only as good as the next paycheck. Good for Luck though, and wow you’re on it today.

Well in that situation, they might be older(let's say 40) so they already have some life savings. And then instead of retiring fully, they could work and arguably more boring, but simpler and less demanding job to get them all the way to retirement.

Fair point, but when have millions cared about a single blue collar worker. Wow, you can lift stuff cool, give this man a contract. Also blue collar workers pick they're job. Maybe they can't get the best career out there, but switch jobs if your general health is at risk. "Step away" at the local Popeyes. Also tents are cheap if you need a roof over your head.

I tore my rotator cuff after being hit by a car on my bike. It has been 15 months with pain and that is awful and it wears on you. After 9 months I got surgery and it is everyday pain and therapy, luckily in California I can avoid opioids for effectively physical and mental relief with cannabis. It is so different especially because you can't do normal things anymore, like pour milk in your cereal or pick up your nephew so easily and play. I understand where he is at and why he would go that way. I would too if I had his resources and responsibilities.

if you check his stats, 2014 was an awesome year, 4700+ yds., 40 TDS, with an average team in the AFC. The next year-- the injuries start. Such a shame, cuz he was a real stud QB, strong arm, very smart, strong in the pocket. Hate to see it end like this-- but he and his family can have some R & R now. Colts fans are hurt, but im a Skins fan, A.Luck was drafted 1, and RG3 2nd that year. I would have loved 5-7 years of peak RG3!!!

I went under the knife in 2007 to repair a type 3 separated shoulder after falling off my mountain bike. I had one injury, not including my MS diagnosis, and I can't imagine going through injury, pain & rehab multiple times. So I completely understand Andrew Luck having enough of it. I'm sure he has a nice little nest egg set aside. I have a feeling that Andy is a smart guy (Stanford Grad) and will not end up among 70% of NFL players who go broke after leaving the game. What is another $100mil worth if you can't move without pain?

  • @TheTimLara

Good for him. Athletes pushing through pain to the point of destroying their bodies so they can't enjoy life after sports makes no sense. I'd liken it to successful workaholics in business who feel like they need to keep earning more and more even through they are financially secure. If you can retire young, do it! You only get one life.

Kotos to Andrew Luck for knowing when to call it quits. I only played Basketball and ran Track and I am having an issue with my knees. I am far from 29; but injuries and life as an athlete is more harder the older that you get. So I can emphasize with him. But I find it ironic that the Colts gave up on Peyton Manning and chose Andrew Luck because of an injury. (It's true different individuals have different levels of pain tolerance) Factor in you Life's Plan and it's sometimes a difficult decision.
