If you have the money and the space, there's nothing like the real thing. It's also fun to get similar sounds for a tenth the cost via soft synths. That's more my budget, but if I could, I'd buy every old synth I could get my hands on. They're so damn cool!

HOW is it different from good midi keys and any software synth's replica? I mean aside from some specific tactile fetishism, because most of them are mastered to sound at least 99,9% same… Especially for FM synths, that are ways more practical to setup on a computer than on hardware DX7.

Being a kid of the 80s who was obsessed with synthesizers and what gear was used, I'll always lean toward hard gear. Reality and cost wise, soft synths are great. So basically, you do you. If you're talented , and can move soul with sounds, doesn't matter where it comes from ultimately...just my $.02. Buttons, knobs and sliders are fun.

Ty Unwin made a couple of good points during a Sonic Talk segment a few years ago regarding hardware vs. soft-synths. A hardware synth will operate without updates even if they are available for the unit. They aren’t going to be made obsolete by the OS maker deciding later on that they aren’t supporting the OS the software ran under. They aren’t asking $100+/year to have the current version and older versions aren’t made incompatible. A hardware synth is going to operate in 20 years as it does now without having to rely on a third party OS or defunct company updates. He also said a person is more inclined to learn mastery of their synth as an instrument of proficiency, like a person who is solely a cellist or flautist. Plugins tend to be treated as extensions of the system they’re attached to and used more superficially. There is also a matter of sound quality on analog circuitry. It can be modeled and perhaps indistinguishable after effects and mixing and mastering and played through the end-listener’s speakers, but when you are listening in studio, the rumble is unmatchable. Some probably get more tactile satisfaction from having knobs and sliders dedicated to the instrument being played as well. It’s an instant gratification effect.

Hey, how many hours a day (nowadays) do you take lessons? And how do you structure your lessons?

Why buy a hardware synth? A really good question...and a multitude of answers. Reason number one is...and I’m not being clever here...but you buy a hardware synth because you want it, it has features and voices, sounds and waves that you desire in your studio or performances. Number two: you buy a hardware synth because you can’t get its features from any other device. Three: the tactical interface of a hardware synth has been designed and arranged for the particular features of that synth. When I play...say the voices and feature components of a given synth like the Prophet 6 as a VST, the midi controls of my Arturia midi controller are not as logically arranged, nor as easily identifiable for use as they are on the original synth. The sound may be practically identical...and in many cases...it is practically identical. But the playing experience is not the same. The ease of use is not the same. Reason four: buy a hardware synth because you really appreciate the value of the unit itself. Maybe you had one years ago... or your favorite artist or album features that synth. Being able to work with the actual synth just like the artist did can be very satisfying... and it can really boost the creative vibe of making your music. I could go on and on. And the truth is, these reasons are not definitive. They are just reasons. My studio is relatively small...as is my budget from time to time for buying new equipment. I would love to have a new Hydrasynth, Polybrute, Fantom, or Moog synth! Maybe all of them! Right? But the truth is, VSTi synths are much more affordable, the only take up hard drive space, and in my mixes, nobody...and I mean NOBODY is complaining that the synth is virtual rather than an actual hardware synth. The most important thing is find tools that work for you and go make music! Good luck, and God bless. Kerry.

I feel like it's a psychological thing as much as a tactile thing, too. If I sit down in front of a DAW, I always feel kind of overwhelmed when it comes to first trying to jam out an idea, as opposed to sitting down with my synth or drum machine and having a more limited set of tools kinda half-guiding what I'm inclined to do with them. I'm not a hardware purist by any means, and it's going to end up in the DAW anyway, and it's likely going to end up pretty different by the time I'm done in there, but starting from "this is the thing I'm going to start making my track with" is a lot easier than "which thing am I going to start making my track with?" It's inspiring in a way that a blank template in a DAW isn't for a lot of us. (I do wonder how much overlap there is between people who feel that way and people who come from a more traditional musical background, as opposed to people who actually started out in a DAW, though. I would definitely imagine there's a correlation there, but I don't know).

DAW's have become uninspiring for the novice and intermediate bedroom producer. They are amazing and wonderful though for the disciplined and seasoned professional.

Hello, dear Dr Mix. What do you think of vintage soviet synths (like Polivoks etc) and do you have any experience with them? ;)
