    What does it mean if the result is, "No Acid-Fast bacilli grown after 2 weeks of incubation"

  • @DoctorODonovan

    @DoctorODonovan

    2 жыл бұрын

    It menas that a culture was likely done and the sample was taken to a lab and put in a special environment to encourage the growth of bacteria. It means no bacteria was grown after 2 weeks - but sometimes it can take 6-8 weeks for bacteria to grow so even if it is 'negative' you can't 100% rule out TB after 2 weeks. If the patient is still displaying symptoms it's likely they will need other cultures which will need to be incubated for 8-12 weeks (see these BTS guidelines for useful information: www.brit-thoracic.org.uk/document-library/guidelines/ntm/bts-ntm-guideline-summary-of-recommendations/)
