Thomas Durant was actually the Real Vice President of the Union Pacific. The Union Pacific became eventually almost completely dependent on Subsidies, which meant that they had to be extremely persuasive in how they got their subsidies. They were paid for the railroad work by the miles of track laid down. They were more concerned with speed than efficiency and Durant himself asked for them to use wood where they could instead of Masonry. The only reason that the leaders of the Central Pacific did not go to jail and have as many scandals is because they “accidentally “ lost a lot of paperwork. A lot of interesting scandals , Native hostiles , and badly built railroad, and terrible conditions while trying to feed thousands of men hundreds of miles from the nearest town. The real overlooked hero is James J. Hill who built his railroad without subsidies. I’m actually reading about this all right now in a book I picked up called the myth of the Robber Barons.

@@i_am_thebatman Slavery has been around far longer than the African-to-North America slave trade. Maybe as far back as Neanderthals co-existing with Homo Sapiens. It is a difficult position to say the first slave owner was of any particular skin color, and in North America, the first slave owners were Native Americans enslaving rival tribesmen and women long before Europeans "discovered" the continent.
