Doc Watson...how he is missed. A true original, often imitated but never duplicated. First time I've heard this. Keep on pickin', Doc.

Song written by U. Utah Phillips, the Golden Voice of the Great Southwest. Phillips left us a few years ago. He travelled the country telling stories and singing songs of his Union, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) or the Wobblies. He was also a fine songwriter as this song so aptly attests. So long, Doc. So long, Utah. May you meet somewhere in the beyond.

My husband pranked the passerbyers in Boone, NC by sitting down beside the bench statue of Doc and was looking over at him and tapping his toe, like Doc was hammerring that ole flat top...priceless looks.

First heard the great Kate Wolf version years ago, which led to Utah Philips. I grew up listening to Doc, but never heard him play this. Thanks Internet!

Pretty sure I added at least 30 views to this today! Been searching but I cannot find this song to purchase. What a shame not to be able to buy this version if it is not available. This song must never go away.

When I first acquired this I was surprised that Doc did not put it on an album since they had obviously worked hard on the arrangement.

If you like Doc and Merle doing this song then you'll love this live version. It's one of my favourites: kzread.info/dash/bejne/paSslNqvcqe_pqw.html It's at the 35 minutes 20 seconds mark. Enjoy 😁

This is great (of course that goes without saying). The only version that I think comes close to this is Flatt and Scruggs'.

the new south's 1975 rocksalt and nails cd by jd crowe, tony rice, ricky scaggs, jerry dougles, and bobby slone is my favorite recording of this song. they were very good back then and they all made it to the top of the heap.
