    I live in the middle of nowhere, we use radios because they're more reliable than cell phones. Things we don't want people listening in on, we either just speak face to face, or we leave a note in a predetermined location.

    Neither of those is a good option when time is critical (marauders/zombies on the way, home/barn on fire, emergency medical response needed). The radio is going to be your go-to plan and that requires planning and cooperation. Always on, always in earshot and always with you would be critical.

    A SAT phone might be a good solution if you live somewhere that doesn't get good cell service. They aren't smart phones, but you can make regular phone calls with them. I've heard Glenn Beck talk about them on his radio show.

    @@graveseeker when time is critical we use the radio, and it's the fastest most reliable form of communication here. Like last week when I needed help fighting a fire on the side of a mountain, radio worked great. For most things, face to face with my close neighbors is the preferred method of communication. The note system is great for things that aren't emergencies, and that you want kept secret.

    Yep, communications. I bought two hand held units that "J" had acquired. And two of the CB radios he recommended. Previously in a former location communication was a problem in more ways than one. I remember having bought along with one or two other guys hand held CB radios. Then at aroundthe FRS/GMRS units hit the market. And every one else bought those instead. My handheld CB is still working but the antenna needed replacement after 20+ years of use on a few job sites where it was useful to have, its got a weatherband also. So im keeping it maintained to use between people with CB radios in their vehicles.

    I’ve been looking into NVIS using HF. Basically it bounce’s radio waves nearly vertical so that they come back down within a 0-500 mile radius instead of skipping over longer distances. This helps with getting signals in various terrain features. It’s all about the antenna design. Maybe a good solution for a larger group to keep comms.

  • @MaritimeHomesteader

    @MaritimeHomesteader

    @ricksargent8754 I built a dipole for 40m and set it up maybe 3.5m above the ground for NVIS. I can talk to people in Liverpool NS, from where I am about 100miles away as the crow flies. I’ve made contacts with people in Europe and all through central and eastern USA. Using an old 100W Yaesu rig for base station and have a couple HT VHF and mobile VHF in truck and one at home. The only thing you can do when distance and terrain are not conducive to communication is to set up repeaters in critical areas.

I do but 99.9999 percent wont .. that being said codes codes codes for the info .I dont have a group and i dont have land so for me and wife its going to be run run for the hills i guess being skilled in life welder house builder diesel machine heavy equipment operator i guess i have all the skills of a guy that 59 with real life hard work background ... PS homystead you bullseye that but most people wont put the hard work in or time trust me 99 percent have no idea about dtmf or how to even work a repeater offsets non of that and they wont ..

    But at least he will not be doing the kind of damage that the rest of the Political Elites want to do to us. Lame Duck politicians are probably what's best for our government at this point. What we need to do is rebuild our LOCAL GOVERNMENTS as they have more influence on our daily lives than the State or Federal Governments does anyway.
