I usually say that when people ask me. The way I think of it is; well yea it does depend? I was born in Location A. I grew up there, but since then I’ve lived in 6 different states. So am I “From” location A or am I from one of the places I just moved from? Now some back story; I’m diagnosed as on the spectrum. I presume this guy may have some similarities. If you listen to him speak he is very literal in his responses and unless you identify precisely what you mean with no room for interpretation he will be able to answer the question as straight forward as you asked it. But now it comes down to how the person perceives how it’s being asked... because someone with autism may perceive a generalized question without understanding what it means in a social context. I assume when people ask it they mean : where did you grow up, but, for someone with autism it can be hard to understand the social rules.
