Do you speak from your throat?

Or, do you or know someone that does? It can sound grating and generally lacks tone and dynamics.
One thing I see and hear often with students or just speakers in general is that they speak from the Larynx, which can be tiring and sound strained.
What you might not realise is that there are a lot more areas of resonance that you can tap into (literally), which will give you more projection and colour to your voice.

I think trying to reduce the intensity of vibrations around the throat was helped me most. English is my second language and I realised my throat is vibrating a lot when I speak it, as opposed to when I'm speaking in my native language. I now sound better when I consciously watch the vibration on the throat.

Interesting video! I’m male and am always confused with being female on the phone. I finally saw a doctor and was diagnosed with sulcus vocalis last year at the age of 30. I have had a very weird speaking / singing journey. Tldr: I spoke through my nose for 16 years, then my throat for 17. Finally, for the last 2 years, I ACTUALLY am speaking and singing from my chest now. Only problem I still have is that I work retail, and am so used to my customer service being my throat voice, that I slip back into it. Trying to learn how to break that habit. I always thought (knew it turns out) that I should be an alto / mezzo-alto for my singing voice. But my speaking voice was so high, everyone I spoke to said not possible. However the soprano / mid-soprano range always felt too high. Friend offered to give me some singing lessons. Turns out I spoke through my nose for ~15 years and no once realized. I start trying to speak through (what I thought was) my chest voice. It seemed so low in comparison, but felt more natural after a bit. However, ~15 years later, I had another shocking reveal. When learning from singing tutorials about placing breath for singing, I realized I STILL wasn't singing through chest vouce. I was speaking through my throat. I learned this because whenever I sang with an open throat (chest voice), my throat would hurt when speaking the rest of the time. Saw a throat specialist who confirmed there was no damage, but my nasal passages were slightly crooked, likely since birth, and since no one caught it, my breath had been placed in the wrong areas. Turns out I am a short-range contralto / mezzo-alto for singing, just like I thought.

I think my problem is that my voice is quite quiet, so when I speak I often speak a little too loudly to be able to be heard properly (in a loud environment). That leads me to sort of half-shout from my throat instead of just speaking softly. Does that sound logical and plausible? And if so, can I do anything to make my voice louder/more powerful?

From what I've gathered lately to not speak from your throat is to avoid putting too much pressure from it therefore speaking lightly. Very sore just to the RH side of my throat. I've noticed this particularly happens when I go down at the end of a word. I'm not intentionally trying to speak lower per say, just better. Thanks Jimmy, why the forward voice placement is crucial? Is it for standard American and British as well? Most of US couches say their accent's placement is back and more low (sounds deeper) then other varieties of English. As for Souther Standard British, I've observed that in SSB all vowel sound can resonate better backwards, some little forward than other vowels but still these maintain backward resonance coz of open space in the back. Well, I'm don't know that much about voice I'm still doing research, exploring. I'd love to know what do you think Jimmy?

Hi Michal, I'm speaking predominantly about resonance here, and finding what is known as chest voice (not to be confused with modal voice which is your normal speaking voice), which is a sympathetic vibration of sound in the chest cavity. There are plenty of exercises that help you find that chest 'resonance'. Hope that helps, can be rather confusing..

Yes, it is the particles in the air that create the sound, but first, there needs to be some form of vibration from the vocal folds (cords) this is called phonation. This phonation comes from the throat, however, can be directed to different resonant areas such as the oral cavity.

After seeing a few videos about speaking from the diaphragm I’ve been practicing and it seems to help make my voice a little louder and deeper and not sounding like a dubbed female anime character. • @jimmycannonvoicecoach

That's great news. To be slightly geeky, you don't actually speak with (or from) the Diaphragm. The diaphragm contracts on the in-breath to allow the lugs to expand and take in oxygen, but it's your Abdominus muscles that help to push the diaphragm back up to push the air out. What you want to focus on is taking the energy away from the throat (Larynx) allowing you to find more resaonance. Happy to chat...

Hi Adam, well firstly your voice really shouldn't be hurting after 10 seconds of speaking, that's for sure... which means that either you're pushing too much air over your vocal folds (not supporting your breath correctly), or your larynx is bunched up and too strained, which could be a somatic response, possibly MTD. More likely the latter. My advice would be to work on your breathing and finding different areas of vocal resonance to take the strain away from your throat. Happy to help: hello@jimmycannon.com

Hello, i think i made a bad habit with the way i talk, i will try to explain in the best way possible, because my english is kinda bad. Okay so, im 17 and my voice is pretty deep, even sometimes in ashmed of it, because if someone ask me for something, and i give a simple answer, i sound kinda mean and scary with the deep voice (im not mean i just answer without thinking it) And i began to punish my voice to sound not that deep, maybe not deep at all, just because sometimes when i speak, i sound rude and scary. And i think i speak from my head, like that little head voice when you think of something, and i speak with it, instead of speaking from the throat (when i speak from the throat, my voice is deep like before but i feel some vibration from it) Also i want to say that, before with my gf, we tended to speak each other with soft voices (Its the same voice i speak when i punished it so it wont sound rude) And it become like a habit, even she has that habit sometimes too. And i want to ask, if i developed a habit about talking with a soft voice, how do i change it in order to sound like my previous deep voice before? Im very concerned, bc i want to speak with my normal deep voice, but i think the soft voice became a big habit, and sometimes like i said, i punish it without thinking too. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long comment :)

Randomly found this. Great video but I found the piano background annoying. Makes it harder to follow you. Might just be ADHD I don't know.

Hi Aaron, I totally agree. I think that's the only one that I thought (having watched others with backing music) I'd try it out. It's actually a track from one of my albums...

So- I’m a trans man- and I’m trying to learn how to use my chest. I was a singer before I started hormones and was a soprano… my voice is higher because I can’t figure out how to not use my throat

Hi Trinity, Well, it's about finding resonance in other areas, such as the chest. The phonation originates from the throat, however by using techniques to create more chest resonance and pitch variety, you can find a deeper sounding voice. let me know if you'd like to find out more...

Information is very useful. However I don't understand the need for the background music while you're talking. Very annoying. Please continue to make videos but ditch the background music. Thank you.

Hi Donna, yes I agree. This I believe is the only video where I thought i'd try and keep the retention with some music. You'll need to watch each and every other video to test that 😘
