Do You Remember Aladdin’s TV Show?

Ойын-сауық

Back in the 90s, our favorite street rat made the transition from the silver screen to boob tube and brought his adventures straight into living rooms. I’m talking, of course, about Aladdin. Everyone knows and loves the feature film, but getting ready for the new live action movie made me want to travel back to those Saturday mornings when I watched Al and Company take on alll new baddies. Much like we learned in the flagship film, appearances can be deceiving, and what’s inside is what counts. This show definitely went deeper with its characters and story. What’s up guys? I’m Kris Carr, and today I’m taking you back to Aladdin the Animated series.

I think one reason Aladdin's TV series is often overlooked is it doesn't show anything that changes the flow of the franchise. There's a lot of content exclusive to it like Iago's girlfriend, Genie's girlfriend, and one of Genie's former masters still being allive. However, if you were to watch the Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves back-to-back, you couldn't tell the TV series even existed.

🤔 That's the way I saw it. I read a fanfic that actually had Jasmine question him why he didn't live at the Palace despite the fact they weren't married. Aladdin told her he had his own place, and if she was marrying a prince, he wouldn't move in until after the wedding. Which makes sense. In many fanfictions Aladdin rarely used his guest room at the Palace, he officially moved in once they were married but he would retreat to his old home once in a while, depending on the circumstances.

Instead of the tacky and shameless cash grabs that are the live action remakes, Disney should focus on adapting their theatrical films into animates series. Sacrifice a bit of the animation budget, focus on the stories, and you've got a great chance to further develop these beloved characters. The Tangles series and Big Hero 6 are great, but those are the only ones they've done. I'd have loved to see Moana on her voyager journeys, experience Zootopia PD, or catch up with the trials and tribulations of The Incredibles.

  • @Unownshipper

    @Unownshipper

@Pareidolia I see what you're saying, but I wouldn't go that far. Yes, the 90s shows based of Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Tarzan, and Hercules were capitalizing off the success of their theatrical movies, but I wouldn't call those a cash grab as much as a natural progression of merchandising. They weren't the same quality as their sources (Disney Toon Studios was a TV studio with a TV budget after all), but they had elements of originality in their stories and provided more chances for character development for their subjects. Conversely, I see the new live-action remakes a shameless cash grab because in my mind there's nothing "natural" about remaking the same movie but this time without the innovative and artful animation. It's unoriginal, the new films don't depart from their Disney sources enough to be considered new adaptations, and the whole practice is just blatantly mining nostalgia for the sake of easy money. That's what I meant.

"Tangled" and "Big Hero 6" are enough for now. We don't need to see them overdo it with every recent animated franchise, or the quality will slip greatly like it did with the 90's direct-to-video sequels. Meanwhile, they need to keep going with these great live action remakes. They may be cash grabs, but they're not tacky or shameless at all (except for "Maleficent")!

Technically, the peddler is supposed to be Genie in disguise (notice the four fingers on each hand). Yeah, Genie himself was also in that closing scene, but he's always been able to split himself into multiple parts, ironically even doing so at that very moment with the bouquet gag.

Being part of the Aladdin fandom for the last 20 years and loving the movie since it first came out when I was 8, I ADORED this series and still do. It made Aladdin and Jasmine's relationship so much more realistic, and it's a CRIME that it's never been released on DVD/Blu-ray. I miss the days of animated serials having a single 20 minute episode instead of the fragmented attention span-coddling stuff that plagues cartoons now. The plots of a lot of the darker episodes didn't talk down to kids, and that's part of what made it great. It's too bad you didn't mention "The Lost Ones" in this because imo it had probably the best animation on the entire series on top of being an amazing plotline. Return of Jafar was originally supposed to be the first four episodes of the series, but Disney decided to experiment by releasing them as the FIRST direct to video sequel which was wildly successful and sold more copies than Pretty Woman. Did you ever see the crossover episode of Hercules, "Hercules and the Arabian Night"? It takes place after King of Thieves and Aladdin is actually an older hero for Hercules to look up to. Phil also tries to hit on Jasmine but she holds up her left hand and deadpans "I'm married." to which Phil says "Oh... sorry, ma'am!". The plot is Jafar turns up in the underworld and hatches a plot with Hades to get revenge on Aladdin in addition to Hades' goals, and Hercules and Icarus work with Aladdin and Jasmine to fight back. It's a great episode! I would KILL to read that original King of Thieves script of Mozenwrath being Aladdin's half brother, but the movie we got was amazing all the same. I always loved the fact that you actually see Aladdin ANGRY and dealing with really deep issues. It added so much depth to his character, especially the confrontation in canyon telling his father "You walked out on your family!", throwing the dagger at his feet with "I won't walk out on Jasmine!" and "I'm your son, but I can't live your life." That always stuck with me, along with Cassim's "You don't know what it's like, to stare up at the palace and know you deserve more; to be called street rat" and Aladdin's quiet "Yes... I do." in return. There was just SO MUCH there behind that answer. I do wish they wouldn't have edited out the blood, though. The trailers showed a big blood splotch on Aladdin's sleeve from Sa'luk, but it's gone in the actual movie. It was really something to see Aladdin actually get HURT, showing he wasn't invincible just like the two episodes of the series when he bruised some ribs and broke his arm. Also, fun fact: when Aladdin and Jasmine are walking back down the aisle at the end of the movie, it's lined with all the friends they made throughout the series from Sadira and Brawnhilda all the way down to King Mamoud. It took years for me to notice that! I always thought it might be a case of pride on Aladdin's part that he didn't live in the palace and only slept there when it's exceptionally cold at night... not wanting charity or to seem like he was mooching. And who knows, after being completely free for most of his life, maybe he had to get used to the confines of the palace. I imagine he might have been pretty uncomfortable there at first, kind of like in that old-ish movie "Castaway" when Tom Hanks finally gets rescued and the first night in a bed in five years he actually moves to the floor because it's how he's used to sleeping by then. Can you tell I've been a hardcore fan of this franchise for most of my life? lol

Ehhhh, I agree and disagree. Spiritual successor, sure, as it expands so many things on the Sundrop Flower lore and the Moon Stone, and the new characters like Cassandra or Varian are interesting, but in terms of villains ? Ehhh I found it lacking, and I don't think Varian's fall was handled really well as it was done too late and too shortly, and being a slow burner, there were also too many filler episodes that didn't even set up a Chekov's gun for later. It has great production values, but some things are kinda sloppily done.

The aladdin tv series was one of the best shows ever when Toon disney existed. I really miss those times when disney really cared so much about animation. I even loved the bad guys, my favorite was mirage the Egyptian cat woman. While my least favorite was... Sadira. Yes i know many people love her but i always disliked her so much. She was so obsessed with aladdin and tries so much to get him. Like in the end of the first episode, when aladdin CLEARLY told her that he loves jasmine, she still tries to force him to love her in the other three episodes she appeared in! Like i couldn't stand her. At least she finally stopped being obsessed and accepts aladdin being with jasmine in the end of the 4th ep she appeared.

I think Abis Mal Amind DA Mullah, and Mechanicalize I believe were comedic villains and I think that Chaos was more of a neutral character.

I wish I was born a year later to be born the same year Aladdin came out. I'm Aladdin/Jasmine obsessed lol. Also it seemed that Aladdin didn't want to rush into marriage. I think he was nervous. There was an episode where the Sultan was like "Is that an engagement present eyyyyy?😉" and Jasmine laughed and said no while Aladdin looked nervous. And yusssss we see how much Jasmine doesn't want to be just a pampered princess. She wants to do what is right for and by her people. She goes on many adventures to save Agrabah. She was so badass that the Galifems captured her to recruit her. Sultan even gets out of the palace to help save her. I mean there is so many reasons to love Aladdin, the character, the movies and the series... which is why I'm so obsessed hahaha. Not to mention growing up Hispanic kid Jasmine and Pocahontas were the closest ones to look like us and represent us look wise. I'm just glad that I chose her as a kid and later kept choosing her for her culture, personality and all of the above as a character. Very underrated.

I loved the Aladdin TV series. It was a favorite of mine growing up, and the adventures and humor hold up really well. That's in part thanks to the great voice cast and likable characters, and the cool world in which the adventures took place. Thanks for this great video.

According to TV Tropes, they never said that they planned to make Mozenrath's Aladdin's brother. That was only ever fan speculation based on the idea of possibly making Mozenrath the villain of the third movie (which was true) and his resemblance to Al.

i always loved aladdin the animated series, though having mozinwrath as aladdin's secret brother that would have been an amazing twist wish they could have done that in the third film. i still like the king of thieves idea but this idea would have been good too, so sad he killed himself i mean truly sad. may he rest in peace. excellent video

That would've been an excellent twist. I always thought that Aladdin and Mozenrath looked similar. I did like the twist in the third movie where we learn a bit more of Aladdin's past. Who would've thought that his father was the king of thieves?

I like the Aladdin show. But I do aknowledge when the writting is all over the place. Sometimes Genie can just fix everything and in others he is usless or goofs around so much he is out of the battle. And yes sometimes they act like you can still get a wish from Genie if you steal the lamp. One time it is just Abismal who dose´t know. Oh and I LOVE Hamud. He is a great character. I like the colorful villians, really charming like Darkwing Ducks villians. I whould have loved to see where the Mozenrath brother angel whould have gone. I give Aladdin tv-show the rating of A Diamond in the rought XD

I would say that the show very much still holds up. I also found it very interesting seeing Jafar show up for an episode of Disney's Hercules: The Animated Series to team up with Hades cause it was a good chance for Aladdin to show off some of that good old fashioned ingenuity that led to Jafar's defeat in the first place, & it didn't disappoint. When talking about Aladdin characters Jafar was always a personal fav since I am very partial to the villains in the first place, & it was Amazing watching Herc & Al pull the ol switcheroo in order to turn their weaknesses into strengths. I Loved it
