@@Alex-kq2pf you realize that's how things go right? That same bag of chips used to cost 5 cents at some point. The reason flagship phones cost so much more is because they are fundamentally more complex. Phones in general have gotten dirt cheap and are widely available with specs you could hardly imagine a decade ago, if you want the cutting edge today you are not really shopping for a better phone but for a showcase of technology. And you know exactly what you are doing. It's like complaining that modern day supercars are overpriced compared to that chevy nova you bought new with a six banger and three speed stick. The actual market in both cases shows that the lower and middle range of performance and value have never been better! You cant buy a car in america today that wont break 100mph, the Miragebis probably the worst economy car you can buy today yet itll break 125, comes loaded in base form with power windows and locks and tons of other features. Similarly even the most basic smart phone today is far more than just a means to place a call and the midrange market is filled with affordable options that offer fantastic performance and value. Back to the car analog a modern middle of the road sedan today offers performance on par or better than performance cars of the past, a current Honda Accord will happily run with most 90s Porsches on a road course. If you are actually shopping top tier phones or cars today you know exactly what you are doing and have no basis to complain about price, it's not like the past where buying premium was required just to get noticeably decent performance from either.

Advantage of having a sliding, physical keyboard on your phone: The virtual keyboard will not cover 90% of the screen when you tilt it to horizontal mode. This should be a good gimmick for 2020 phones. Make sure it is durable and buttons are big, clickable and easy to press. When the phone is vertical, virtual keyboard can be use. But in horizontal mode, virtual keyboard is off as you can use the build-in sliding keyboard.

One issue I see from this video is that keyboards would have to be a lot longer than the old phones because of the large touchscreens, which would make the physical keys pretty large and spaced out, something I wasn't a fan of back in the day. I preferred simple, small keyboards that I could easily reach both sides if I stretched far enough with my thumbs. It's a personal issue I suppose. I just really miss the speed and accuracy I could text with on a full physical keyboard phone, even behind my back thanks to the standouts on the f and j keys he mentions in this video. I also grew up on a computer and I'm massively faster on a touchscreen than on a phone sized physical keyboard. The problem with phone physical keyboards is that you can't actually *type* with them because you use multiple fingers to type properly, even if you don't know standardized touch typing technique (I don't but I'm self taught and can hit about 90wpm on a normal keyboard regardless). As a result, you're stuck using just your thumbs, and your thumbs aren't going to be faster on a physical keyboard than using a swipe keyboard to write whole words in a couple of movements, especially with the power of predictive text in this day and age.

Agreed. I grew up on a farm and around tractor trailers. I've crushed, smashed, and mangled my hands over my life. My thumbs are fat, my left hand is busted to shit (I was left handed, but after shattering that wrist 8 times, I'm now right handed), and I don't have little dainty hands like Linus. Touch screens are just horrendous for me. The area is tiny, I never hit the key I intend to, the onscreen keyboard obscures 1/3rd of the screen, and the autocorrect everyone tells me works so damn well makes me sound like a foreign exchange student with dyslexia. Sure I can get away with typing a 5-10 word message on a touchscreen, but anything beyond that is near impossible. Of course I could be more terse, but alas, I refuse to. Case in point, a lot of the online forums I still hang out at have users come in on their cellphones and post short nonsensical posts and then they get pissed at us because we can't figure out what they're asking because they tried to condense a paragraph into a short sentence riddled with typos and abbreviations.

I hate that everyone insists on copying Apple's shittiest ideas. Touch keyboards are OK for casual use, but rubbish for anything important... Even typing a password is a bit of a guessing game when you don't have it shown on the screen (which is a retarded method of working around the problem). I really miss having phones that were practical.

I still have my Motorola Milestone and surprisingly it's still functioning well with a custom Rom, the beauty of a physical keyboard shines where you can have your full keyboard along with the entire screen real estate at the same time, and yes, it's very convenient during an RDP session for example. to go around this other layer of keys I suggest having the switch button (equivalent to shift for example) on the other side of the phone where the shutter key is, but more accessible to the hand like in a game controller where the user can hold it using the index finger while typing with the thumbs.

Would be awesome for a company to make this design but with a second display instead of a keyboard. Would be skinner, more useful, and customizable. It could easily be made from a durable plastic and i know theres technology out there to basically allow a physical bubble to pop on the screen to recreat a physical keyboard, it just isn't the prettiest on the main display. But on a second hidden display which sole use is for productivity scaling .. well pretty display doesnt really matter.

Man, there are so many times when a physical keyboard is just so much better: - When you want to type something without looking at the phone - When it's cold and you're wearing gloves. - When it's cold and you _AREN'T_ wearing gloves but you're fingers are frozen. - When you are sweaty or kind of wet and your gross hand liquids are smearing all over the screen and making the touch sensor glitch out. (KZread is especially bad at this. Sometimes I try to just hit a skip button or tell it to play next... even though autoplay is on... and KZread likes to completely shit itself if the touch sensor messes up for even a little bit. Even if I completely clean the screen and dry it, scrolling on KZread will be broken and if I'm in picture-in-picture mode then just touching the screen anywhere will cause the mini player to fly all over the place. Not even force stopping the app will fix it, I will _actually have to hard restart the phone to fix this stupidity._ And it's ONLY KZread that does this, everything else will work fine, even other videos will play in the mini player without having a fucking seizure.) - When you are working in an environment where you have to wear gloves for safety or protection and the touchscreen sensitive ones are not an option. - When you want to actually be able to type in landscape mode and see something other than the fucking keyboard - Certain mobile gaming like OpenMW or emulators that let you map keyboard inputs. - Wanting your special characters to be in their normal goddamn positions and not wherever the keyboard decides to put them. - Typing in bright sunlight and you don't want to wreck your battery by putting the screen on max brightness. - If you don't have little baby Canada hands and not even a goddamn Note screen is big enough for you to reliably only press one key on the touch screen at a time, but you had zero problem with the much smaller physical keyboard on the LG enV2 because tactile feedback. - You have super callous-y fingertips from guitar and manual labor and touch screens don't always like that when making tiny, precise taps, especially if you have a screen protector on. - _HAVING ARROW KEYS._ (sometimes, depends on the model. Sometimes it's a little circle D-Pad with an enter button in the middle kinda dealio. Still a definite plus) - You like being able to feel your inputs and having the buzzer tickle your fingertips doesn't cut it.
