My go-to is the Eddie Bauer hooded MicroTherm jacket. It’s thin, lightweight, and incredibly warm. It has breathable/flexible side panels, which help regulate temp extremely well, and improve mobility. Packs into chest pocket, and is water resistant. Plus, it comes in far more colors than many of the others presented, and they’re frequently on sale! Right now, $194 (down from ($259). I’ve never had an EB jacket that I regretted purchasing. I wear this jacket frequently in Seattle, in all weather, and recently wore it on a trip to Fairbanks in the fall.

My favourite packable puffer jacket is my Rab Altus jacket. I scored it on discount at my favourite outdoor outlet shop here in Melbourne, Australia. I've taken it on trips to Scotland in winter and it held up so well. I've had it for quite a few years and it still looks like new. I love that it's synthetic instead of down so that if I get caught in a downpour without my raincoat it won't get damaged. :)

About 2 years ago, I purchased a no-name puff jacket and was sceptical but needed a light travel cold weather jacket. I was so surprised on how well it performed keeping me warm. I ended giving to a friend traveling to Swiss Alps in the summer. It was really appreciated. Definitely a staple item. Thanks for the brand reviews and discount offer as well. 💚

I've been wearing the REI Co-op puffer jacket recently. At only $99, you can't gripe about the price. It's been doing a good job of keeping me warm here in Monument Valley UT this winter. It lacks some of the features seen in the more expensive jackets from this video and maybe I'd notice the difference if it got really cold. But I've found it adequate so far.

I never bought one because in Norway where i live there is always a high chance of rain, until the weather dips below zero. So i always thought why not wear a rain jacket and a sweater until winter and then a big down jacket in winter. But then i saw my mother bring one on our trip to Italy in October, in a small pocket that took no space at all. I always thought a fleece would be much more comfy, but yesterday i tried one on and damn. It was also 2 degrees and i was just wearing my t shirt and jacket so i bought it😂 It still feels like a weird clothing item tho as you still need a rain jacket, so you have to wear two jackets.

The micro puff is pluma fill, so like all synthetics it doesn’t really have a fill power rating. It basically replaced the ultra light down jackets which were 800 fill, but according to Patagonia it’s comparable warmth to the regular down sweater. It’s been said the better synthetics are comparable to 700 fp down. Another thing is the quicker heat, synthetics have that “instant warm” sensation down doesn’t have if you’re already cold when putting it on. Both will work but down takes longer to rev up, and any body vapor you put out will contribute to loft reduction the longer you have it on and remain active On another note they never said pluma fill isn’t “as good” as down, to the contrary in one of the primo vids it’s said “light years ahead of down”...but to its credit down has the best warmth to weight of any insulation, it’s more packable, and more durable (synthetics lose loft over time if repeatedly compressed)...but it’s worthless if wet, and the best hydrophobic down treatments aren’t that great...and note how they briefly had the Encapcil treated down around 2013 in a belay parka that was 1000fp (an industry first) but it’s hard to charge more for rarer “humane” down when it’s worthless when wet, and plumafill is proprietary so no need to outsource.

My eastern mountain sports and LLBean ones I’m using rn both are great jackets.. no complaints other than.. Don’t buy a down jacket WITHOUT a hood.. wow they are useless with no hood. Buy your normal size.. ie.. if you wear a medium t shirt, buy a medium down jacket. They are all sized huge. Aaand lastly, if you want light (and quality) do 800+ fill. Buy right.. the Patagonia down hoodie is where it’s at rn I think. Expensive but about the best until you get into the alpine gear that costs thousands

Try Nickwax Tech Wash to rejuvenate synthetic insulation. Sometimes the insulation is flat because it's covered in body oils etc which normal detergents don't remove. These oils also occupy space which should be occupied by warm air. I've rejuvenated 25 year old winter sleeping bags etc with the stuff. Not magic, but definitely worth the small pricetag - +-65% improvement on average for me.

Good to hear@@sylvaind ! We've mostly been focused on lighter weight & packable jackets so far, but we're starting to get into other types of travel content-like road trips-that allow folks to pack a little heavier comfortably. Our writer Taylor swears by the Patagonia Better Sweater. Thanks for the note - will keep this in mind, and let us know what you settle on!

I bought a northface thermoball jacket right before a 2 week trip to Japan in the winter. While it was warm I'm disappointed in the quality. It's already beginning to fray/threads coming loose. I haven't even used it in sports/activity yet, just walking around.

Love my Ghost Whisperer jackets. My Cerium LT is warmer but too slim of a fit. Funny though now I barely see Canada Goose hybrid jackets anywhere. Trendsters are back in Patagonia snd TNF jackets. All are excellent though. I have many decades old and still going strong.

I purchased two down jackets last year. OR Illuminate jacket and Arc'teryx Cerium SL hoody. Both are minimalist jackets, however the Cerium jacket is head and shoulders a better jacket in my opinion. It felt warmer, better fit, and a better feel to it in my hands. I'm not knocking the Illuminate jacket. OR makes great products and I own more then a few of their items. However the Cerium SL was exactly what I was looking for in a light weight down jacket. I generally wear it as an outer layer when out for a walk, and it also makes a great midlayer when I'm out snow boarding. The only down side to the Cerium is the price compared to other jackets in this product range.

Great comparison here, Sheldon. Thanks for sharing! We're big fans of the Arc'teryx Cerium SL Hoody too. Our content creator, Mark has been testing this jacket out for the last month and was pretty impressed with the warmth-to-weight ratio, so it's great to hear that it's working well for you too. @@PackHacker Tips and tricks from pro travelers is always awesome, but I think hearing from travelers on the thinking and logic behind their travel systems would be really cool. Fortunately, I have a job that lets me travel for work and I always find it really cool to hear from others about their "philosophy of use" when it comes to their travel systems. So maybe a podcast taking an in depth look at how people pack, what gear they prioritize and why. Thanks! -Ben
