Do you need a DVR?

Ғылым және технология

At one time, the DVR was a revolutionary TV appliance. The ability to pause and record live TV was MUCH higher quality than a DVR. In the current age of streaming and on-demand services, however, has the DVR outlived its usefulness?

I have not watched "live" tv in years with the exception of a few news broadcasts. I DVR everything and fast forward through commercials.

As others have said, skipping commercials is a big plus. For me, I also use DVR to record sporting events so I can begin a game when its convenient for me and skip commercials until I catch up with the live broadcast.

Yes. I have a TIVO and still use it, because NONE of the streaming providers allow recording by TIME and CHANNEL, and KZreadTV is constantly "forgetting" to record a show even though it shows the check mark. Also, the TIVO has much better quality on my Antenna than streaming. I also still have my BetaMax for my tape collection. My VHS broke, so looking for a replacement cheap at the Salvation Army store and rummage sales. What I REALLY want is to hook my capture card back up where it can record streaming channels, but I would need to strip out the HDCP and its more hassle than its worth. You also overlooked that the streaming providers do NOT provide the extra channels like MeTV, etc, so I have to use the Tivo to record those.

I still like to have a (OTA) DVR. Some shows are simply not available on streaming, or are available at a premium. Good examples are Jeopardy!, sports games on national networks, Decades' Through the Decades, and History Channel/PBS documentaries. I was able to watch a full season of How the States Got Their Shapes and NOVA without having to subscribe to History Vault or PBS Passport, respectively, because I just recorded them via my OTA DVR. Some DVRs also don't offer subscription fees. Prominent examples of are Sling TV's AirTV and the Fire TV Recast. Then again, this is admittedly a niche use case. Not everyone needs a DVR.

It's a must when you have OTA unless you want to be a slave to TV schedules. In our house we dabble in everything. Have had a Tivo OTA with an 'all in' subscription for years. Husband has a Tablo. Our OTA is a bit unreliable so we keep a few streaming services as a mainstay. Services like Hulu, Paramount and Peacock cover the majority of major network content with the exception of sports. We are Prime members so we have it's content. We can pickup other services like Netflix, Disney or HBOMAX briefly when there is enough content to watch. We had KZread TV but found it's expense was like cable with many channels we did not use. For that kind of money we found one can bundle many streaming services and target one's preferences. Now we use the OTA for sports and backup (Tivo) in case our internet goes down. To be fair, there is a lot of management juggling all these things ... hardware, software and programming but I don't mind staying on top of programming while my husband is the hardware guy. Luckily our TiVo hardware remains solid and Tablo has turned out to be trouble free as well. Bottom line .... recording OTA content is the way to go if you purchase something like Tablo with a lifetime subscription. However, with ATSC 3.0 being implemented across the country eventually our DVR's will need converters but that's a ways out yet.

We have had several generations of TiVo devices and still pay for cable. It’s actually cheaper than KZread tv and we get more channels. I tired KZread TV for 2 months and was surprised by the quality difference in the signal. Watching the US Open (tennis) the colors were brighter and crisper through cable compared to KZread TV. I went back and forth and tried other channels as well. We have nearly gig speed so that is not the problem. So far we are sticking with cable for now.

The day my satellite dish died, back in 2008, I made the decision to "cut the cord." I contacted the provider, cancelled the service, packed up the DVR and shipped it back. I have Netflix and Amazon video (benefit of my Prime membership I already had) for selecting TV or movies to watch, plus other free channels on my Roku. Do I miss my DVR? No, I don't. Did I really need it to begin with? No, I didn't, but at the time it was one of those things that "everyone" had so I had to have it as well. I'm in a major city, so I also have the benefit of many local channels via a digital antenna.

I have Android Shield TV. I watch TV from Google KZread. Unlimited Cloud storage. Shield TV gives free updates without paying. Thousands of apps to watch. I make Digital copies from DVD's and Blu-rays that I own, so I don't have to buy or rent streaming movies or watch commercials or have my movies edited. AT&T would always tack on fees when you rented the equipment or raise prices out of nowhere. Little heat comes from the Android Shield box Vs owning a DVR. Less energy too.

Tivo is not a lifetime subscription. It is only good for the life of the Tivo Box.

My TiVo is still my favorite al time media device. I have Sling and their DVR sucks ass. I had AT&T U-Verse and their DVR sucked less ass but still sucked ass.

Not everyone can afford broadband so ota TV is all they can get, plus elderly people cannot setup the tech for all these services and just want their TV and remote to record similar to their old vcr. There has to be a default no frills basic alternative when people cannot be online.

The only way a TiVo is useful is if you live in a rural area with terrible internet connection but also live somewhere that has cable available. But if you live in a city like lets say Chicago and have great wifi then you'd be a plum fool to even have cable to begin with. Either that or you're old and don't want to learn new technology but still want ro record Wheel of Fortune.
