Do you need a Chief Digital Officer and what do they actually do? | Work Tools #16

The key question I was discussing with Prof. Dr. Olaf Bach was if weather companies do or actually will need a Chief Digital Officer (CDO) . He is Professor of Business Economics, Lecturer for Organization Design in particular, at the University of St. Gallen and Visiting Professor of Business Economics at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin as well as the founder of the company Management Kits (www.managementkits.com), a business design experiment at the intersection of academia and practice.

1:44 Where do you see the biggest enemies and hurdles to become a digital company and for the digital transformation as such?
4:13 What are the biggest hurdles? Where would you start?
5:30 Would you say that the main responsibility is driving the change inside of the company or how would the profile ideally look like ?
6:30 Will the CIO remain?
7:50 So is the CIO building roads and the CDO managing the traffic?
8:20 Operationally what are the specific things on the agenda of the CDO?
10:38 A CDO will have to drive the change and show people how it works. Where do you find those people?
12:15 Going digital means going decentral, what are areas also in the digital world that you want to keep under tight control?
14:07 The support functions such as CLO, CFO, CHR have crucial roles. What kind of expertise do they have to bring?
Oh and if you like: I send a weekly 3x3 briefing to all my contacts. It covers 3 ideas to discuss and think over the weekend in less than 3 minutes. It’s fun and you can drop out any time. Have a look and join the discussion (via christophmagnussen.com).

Christoph is an entrepreneur since high school. After graduating from St. Gallen University, he co-founded a mobile phone reCommerce company which grew from 1M to 31M in revenue in less than 5 years. To scale the business he wouldn’t just add manpower. Instead, he was obsessed with increasing individual productivity through latest online collaboration tools and new work methods.
This new digital setup triggered many requests from fellow entrepreneurs to support them in building the same environment in their companies. This is how the idea for Blackboat was born. A tech focused company designed to help leaders increase team efficiency by leveraging cloud tools and fast communication.
Christoph is also a keynote speaker and he shares his experiences, thoughts and ideas about #EndOf90iesIT and #futureofwork via his KZread channel and Facebook page.
His team has been involved in projects with clients like Facebook, mymuesli.com, thjnk AG, Nestlé, Microsoft, Google, Service Partner One, Amorelie.de, AboutYou.de, E.ON, Mediakraft et. al.

“Faster communication is better communication” … not necessarily. Very academic statement … doesn’t work this way in corporate world. Especially highly matrixed and big organizations
