Do you know what an HGV driver can see? | We find out!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We all think we can be seen on the road, but can we? In the case of an Heavy Good Vehicle driver, they might not be able to see where you are, even if you think you are visible! We look as exactly what a driver of an HGV can actually see!

Enlightening video guys. Excellent, one of your best instructional ones. I'm a IAM rider and blood biker, been riding bikes for 50+ years and I did not realise the blind spots to the full extent. So much worse than the 'If you can't see my mirrors, I can't see you.' This video should be shown during the CBT and learner driver instruction.

As someone who drives a LHD truck, I can't believe the amount of times drivers do sit beside my right hand front wheel on motorways. Its no too difficult to see then in good daylight weather, but at night, especially if its raining, and its a dark coloured car, then it becomes far more difficult, the same would go for a motorbike. The newer trucks I drive do have warning systems, but they're not always perfect, I have them give up in bad weather. Cameras on the back of trailers are great, but again they'll get covered in road grime in bad weather, making it difficult to see, mine sits right on top so its also not easy to clean at a stop.

Brilliant, brilliant video. I returned to class1 hgv driving about 12 months ago after 18 years police, I'm also a lifelong biker. This should be compulsory viewing for road users, particularly car drivers who only have that qual. Great point about adjusting speed joining duals/mways too- it's so easy to out accelerate a hgv but so many drivers don't do it.

Great KZread. Made me think. I'm in Swast ambulance service. As a response driver on blue lights there's also so many aspects that we would love drivers to understand when we are driving on blues. Maybe you could do something similar about responding as a driver when you see or hear emergency services driving on blues. Cheers Lee cooke

Always good to see from someone else's perspective and what a valuable lesson given here by you both and the boys in blue, I have nothing but respect for drivers of this size vehicle because I have observed how consistent and measured they are on the open road, then I consider how they manoeuvre these things into tight spaces when they arrive at the destination often in reverse! huge respect . Thanks guys.

Toby & Mark, thank you! This is a compelling video that clearly has had a lot of work put into it. Very clever and thought provoking as it looks at the issue of road safety but from the opposite view of the truck driver which just isn’t considered by non truck drivers. So good, the police wanted to be involved! Definitely worthy of national television! Well done guys!

Interesting video reminds me when i took part in BP Driver of the year competition (worked for DHL fuel delivery)this was one of the issues that DHL took away from it, so much so we took a truck round to schools etc and asked the kids how many children and teachers could sneek in front of the truck from the side, before one of them seated in the drivers seat would see them. It aways amazed them that the whole class creep up and stand in front of the vehicle a real eye opener for them.

A good video, the only thing I would add is when you're turning, how one mirror is suddenly full of the side of your trailer and the other is peering off over a hedge somewhere and you effectively lose all rear vision, not great going forwards but if you have no rear camera a lot worse reversing.

That's a very useful and important topic. The rear viewing distance is pretty large. When following trucks I try to see their mirrors so they should be able to see/ be aware of my presence. You mentioned no cameras on the trailer but there should be a good case for having a wireless descent battery camera module that could be easily attached with say a strong magnet.

Hitting the transit at 60mph is an impact speed of 60 not 120. Very good vid though. Why are there not cameras on the trailer back to a rear view mirror. I was passenger in a car recently and the rear view mirror was a video screen showing a mirror view.
