The thing is, sonic has so many unique forms and characters to refference. But they took none of it. Like Darkspine, Werehog, Super, Excalibur, Hyper, Classic as just a few examples.

​​@@Cartoony444 What's really criminal is, Sonic hasn't had any new SSB music remixes sense Jun Senoue's Angel Island remix in Brawl. (Literally every other Sonic song is taken directly from numerous Sonic games) In "Ultimate" Jun Senoue even contributed a new Megaman remix oddly, (a series that already has many remixes) yet didn't make one for Sonic, despite the fact he never worked on a Megaman game and only worked on Sonic games music. So even Sonic's own music creator snubbed him in Smash. Honestly, the Sonic series is probably the most screwed over series in Smash... Aside from having 2 stages in "Ultimate," and a new assist trophy character. (Knuckles, though the fact he has a homing attack makes his character seem unresearched.)

These are all stretches.

I will admit that the cuffs being different is a nice touch but MAN these colors are so lame, if they just went all out with the different colors based on other characters from the series instead of these, it would've been a LOT better. Hell, imagine if the black costume was more like the 2P color in Sonic the Fighters, since it's obviously based on old black and white cartoons (Sonic himself was modeled after those, like Felix the Cat), it would've looked so cool next to Sora's Timeless River alt.!

Pretty sure all but one of the Player 2 costumes (or Mirror Match alts, as I've also seen them called) are black and white. The one exception being Honey the Cat, whose hair turns blonde and dress blue. I think her main fur color changes too, but I don't remember off the top of my head. Also, as a side note, pretty sure that these alt colors in Sonic the Fighters are only ever seen in Mirror Matches.

I've heard that Sega doesn't allow sonic to be any color other than blue anymore? Except for super sonic obviously. But I don't know how true that is

@@yasmineh.1333thats very much not true given how often they make him other colors. In Sonic COLORS they make him different colors not only for the power ups but also the GameLand mode where he comes in pink, green, red, and black besides a darker blue

Kind of surprised they didn’t make all the cuffs the colors of the 7 chaos emeralds

I personally think that the Black alt is a reference to Dark Sonic from Sonic X.

I’m convinced Sakurai’s love for the Sonic series is the music, he gave Sonic 2 spin dashes and very basic moveset when he could’ve worked with a lot of Sonic titles including Sonic BATTLE

The oddest change to Sonic's Orange alt is it was originally red in Brawl. Smash 4 changed the color to orange and in Smash Ultimate the fur color Sonic had for both Orange and Red were swapped for some unexplained reason. Another interesting tidbit is related to Sonic's body color in both the Red and Green alts in Brawl. For one reason or another those two alts in Smash 4 onwards made Sonic's fur *brighter* compared to Brawl with the Red alt turning Sonic's fur a shade of purple (which would later be swapped with the green alt as previously mentioned) rather than the darker blue it originally had which made Sonic look like some of his older artwork. For some bizarre reason there have been two moments in Sonic's history as a playable character in Smash Bros where he just isn't allowed to have alts that have a nearly identical fur color to another alt.

@@FungusFindersBeware With Bowser Jr it makes sense because he's small and in a mech, not so much with Sonic. Not only is Sonic smiling but he says lines like (Sonic Speed) and( we should do this again some time). I can't imagine Shadow and Sliver saying stuff like that it would feel out of character. Also Shadow doesn't run, he floats with his hover shoes.

The crystal ring also happens to resemble Tikal's (and Reboot Sally's) cuffs/bracelets, which I'd always consider neat.

We COULD’VE had more colorful and aacurate colors for Sonic, BUT SEGA probably had a mandate for Sonic to not drastically change his color for his costume for some reason. I would’ve loved to see an orange recolor with blue eyes to reference Tails, or a proper black recolor with red lines running down Sonic’s quills with rings near his hands and feet to properly reference Shadow.

My favorite Sonic color is his gray one. It makes him look like Silver, my favorite Sonic character.

His black alt is based on the co op robots in Sonic Colors game lab mode.

The last two costumes are mad specific and niche, like the hand that appears in the Sonic 2 special stage? They couldn’t make a costume that references Tails or Knuckles but they could make costumes that reference the hands from the Sonic 2 special stage

Introducing the echo fighter system was a perfect place to introduce shadow, silver, Amy, knuckles, etc. I mean they all do spin attacks and run fast so it wouldn’t have been that weird

@@aydentolive71 I feel the timing when they first introduced the Echos and we end up getting Shadow as a Assist Trophy tells a lot. I wouldn't be surprise if Sakurai tried to convince SEGA to let him add Shadow in but they kept on refusing.

Shadow doesn't have super speed, it's just his shoes. The others kinda make sense but they have WILDLY different movesets that it would be a crime not to include, making them entirely new characters in the end. How could you not include Amy's Pico hammer? Or the Tornado? If they are gonna add anything it needs to be either full on characters or just better color swaps

These references are as dry as the references in Sonic movie 1.

The only bracelet/cuff change I would accept is Chip's bracelet from the end of Unleashed.

Sonic has some of the most colourful casts and the best they could do was Shadow and Silver and Sonic four more times? What about pink for Amy? Red for Knuckles? Yellow for Tails? Hell you’ve any number of Sonic-alts to choose from (Werehog, Metal Sonic, Dark Sonic etc.)

Personally, I only feel two of these are references, being the Crystal Ring, and the green ring. Maybe only the former, though.

Sonics sid B Spin Dash is based on the spin dash animations from Sonic CD. The down B spin dash is just the regular spin dash.

I honestly wonder if Sega or Sonic Team mandated they couldn't really give Sonic any different colors, because they didn't want him to look like other official Sonic characters or fan-characters.

If they just didn’t try to keep the blue on all his costumes and actually had different colors, he would be great. But they want to keep a different shades of blue which throws off the color scheme a lot
