I treat them like a cast iron skillet. I clean my grill about one a month and brush oil on them. Then I fire up the grill and put it on high for about 15 minutes to cook on the oil. I have the same grates from 17 years ago! Not cleaning your grill up will cause moisture to build-up and then it will rust. Honestly go check out any Grill forum and the key is keeping it clean!

  • @SouthernFoodJunkie

That is 100% correct! Plus Teese were porcelain coated and I used a wire brush back when and that made the coating come off. I did oil these and bake them every few months as well. It was always kept with a cover on it. When we moved in a temporary home while building our house, it had to set in the yard with the cover on it and when I go to use it, it would have lots of moisture trapped under the cover. That most likely what did it. Thanks for your comment. It adds some great points!

What I generally do is to put on my old telephone man tool belt and white hardhat and drive around town looking for someone who owns the same grill as me. When I walk behind the houses or Apt. buildings, I don't look suspicious. I simply find some grates that are in better shape than mine and I swap them out. Doesn't cost me a dime. It's best to do this in the city. Country folk usually have dogs.

I have the exact same situation going on with my Baron 320. Those cast iron grates started rusting like 2 months after I got it. I complained to Broil King and they did nothing. That BBQ now comes with stainless steel grates instead of cast iron so it's obvious they had a problem but did nothing to help customers that purchased the prior gen that had the cast iron grates.

No, I do not have rusty grill grates, I try to clean my completely spotless every single time I use it, whether charcoal or gas. (I never thought about stainless steel). I also never leave my grills set out in the rain. Steel rusts 10 times faster or more when it's wet. I made a barrel stove for the shed out of a 55 gallon drum, it never gets wet in the shed. Still fine after maybe 30 years. The 55 gallon drum outside "burn barrel" has to be replaced maybe every 3 months.

  • @SouthernFoodJunkie

Yeah these never stayed out in the rain either. Always had a cover on it when it was on my back porch. Now it is under a cover so no cover on it now. This grill is too heavy for me to pick up and move into a building and such. I also oiled the grates everytime before and after use. Just a process of heating and cooling that causes them to rust bring outside in the humid south. This grill is about 6 or 7 years old. I'll never have to worry about the grates rusting anymore with stainless steel though. I usually get about 2 years out of my burn barrels outside. I actually got one I now that is starting to rust through that I got to replace. Thanks for stopping by buddy.

@@SouthernFoodJunkie I think you have solved the grate problem, but the burners may still rust. I've seen many grills that were ruined by rusted away burners. The key is to keep it as dry as possible. Both of my grills are little and light, I move them into the garage after using, (one rolls on wheels). At the mill where my dad worked, they gave away 55 gallon drums, wanted the workers to take them. Now the mill is closed, gotta pay like 20 bucks every time a burn barrels rusts away.
