Do we watch US news, AND, the best news story in the Netherlands!
When Tammy and I moved to the Netherlands from the US and became expats, we were more than happy to leave the news behind and start following Dutch news. The other day, I came across the best Dutch news story...EVER. All I can say is Amersfoort, here we come! I need to see this for myself. We have also received the news about our Dutch residency and if we are able to stay or not with our DAFT visa in the Netherlands. PLUS what did I pull out of the trash and what am I going to do with it? I can tell you this ...life in the Netherlands is the best. Getting into the Netherlands, getting an apartment in Rotterdam and assimilating into the Dutch culture isn't easy but it's worth it. So, whether you're moving to Holland/the Netherlands from the US, you're in for a great life! Take it from an expat in the Netherlands, retirement in Europe is worth looking into, especially if retirement in the Netherlands is on you bucket list. life in the Netherlands as an American...go for it!!

Actually according to the US state dep't, dutch is a Category 1 language, meaning it's the easiest to learn for native English-speakers. I have to admit I was surprised when I read that, especially considering German is a Category 2 language, but Dutch and German are quite similar.

The problem with Dutch is the 'Holland' pronounce of the language. You know the crazy sounds from the kiel like chrgs. People in Brabant, Limburg, Flanders don't do that. I bet if you moved to these more civilised regions of the Netherlands, you'd speak Dutch in a heartbeat.

@@hardyvonwinterstein5445 I lived in Zuid Limburg (Brunssum) so would probably speak (if I still did) with an accent. But anyway, I really love the Dutch people and living abroad (besides NL I lived in the UK for over a decade) has really opened my eyes about Germany. I do not like Germany anymore, simply because I have seen that things can be so much better in other countries.
Jeugdjournaal is a great source of dutch news. It's aimed at dutch children but that makes it easier to understand when learning dutch!

Dutch news is also depressing. I never watch it.
What we had to do in all foreign languages at school was read an article in a quality French, German or English newspaper every week, write down the words that we did not recognise, look up the meaning in a dictionary and learn them by heart. Next day the teacher would ask a verbal summary in French or German or English and go through all the words you wrote down to see if I learnt them all. More than two fails, and you had to do an extra article. That is a good way to learn a language in writing (but you still need to do the grammar though, and that is very complicated in Dutch).
Frisian and Dutch are actually the languages that are closest to English (that are also still alive). The differences between Dutch and English are quite systemic, and once you figure out how the system works it becomes easier. I recommend that you watch het jeugdjournaal once you reach A2-B1 level, it is news but for children. They cover serious events but also lots of puppy and animal stories, and is more optimistic in tone. :)

Hi guy´s, thank you for all the great video´s you have put online. Just to let you know that tomorrow aug 9 there is a free classical concert in Amsterdam. It´s a classical festival that goes on for two weeks and tomorrow is the last concert on the list. If you can´t make it you can also see it live on tv. Hope you take some time to take a look and enjoy it.
My wife and I attended to a candle light concert here in Genoa. It was a string concert tribute to the Queen (the band, not the regal parasite) and was held in the hall of the minor council of the ducal palace. It was very atmospheric with thousands of candles and in a very suggestive place. The candles are electronic for safety reasons. It was a bit expensive, but it was worth it.
Congrats,...that's good news.👍😉
That's good news another five years !! Enjoy it.👍

and we want video's Eric learning dutch each and every session !!! Eric prove it to us you are putting all your effords in it !!!!
Congrats on the 5 year extension, really great to hear. Learn the language, it is difficult but certainly not impossible. One advantage, compared to English, is that when you see a word written down you know exactly how to pronounce it. Because there are strict rules that dictate the pronunciation. For example 'fikkelwasbleegje' (I just made that word up, it does not exist) would be pronounced identically by everybody who speaks Dutch. There's probably a fancy term for languages with this trait but I don't know it. Practice the rolling R and gargling G because we use it a lot and they are probably the most difficult. I will keep watching this channel and will not rest until you can both pronounce 'roggebrood' (rye bread) perfectly. My English teacher (in the 70s) advised us to leave the radio on BBC news while doing homework, he said it does not matter if you don't understand it, you will get a better feel for the language. And he was right, made it a lot easier. Doei !
Wow what a relief it must be that you are allowed to stay another 5 years. Can't wait for 5 more years of great video's.
FIRST! Glad to see you again this summer!
Congratulations on your 5 year extension 🎉🥳I knew you can do it. Eric, you got this. If you know the basics of the Dutch language. The rest will follow and you'll be fluent in Dutch within 5 years💪🏽

Hello you two. I've been following your channel for quite some time. I am glad that you feel comfortable in Europe. I often see the CNN news channel, and what is going on there in the US politically at the moment, well to be honest, the US is not a very good picture. I do not want to know what is still so everything is uncovered what was not known. And one can only hope that these will get their just punishment. In Germany live two American families who also report about their experiences here with us. These are "The Black Forest Family" and "My Merry Messy Life". Both families also bring highly interesting videos, watch them and report about it if you like it. Greetings from Germany.

As it happens to be, we went to one last year in Amsterdam, and we really enjoyed it. If you have doubts, let us invite you to go to one of the concerts.
You guys getting to stay is even better news than the polarbear thing (that's for sure!). Congrats!!!
According to the US diplomatic service Dutch is a category 1 language, thus 'easy' to learn. Also, Dutch is the most closely related major language to English. Dutch possesses many words and phrases similar to English and has a similar grammatical structure. A great and fun way to study Dutch is by learning sayings and proverbs. They are easier to remember than random sentences and are very 'visual'. Have fun and good luck!

Though Dutch is very close to German, Dutch is much closer to English than German is. B.t.w. the English called Old-English "Dutch" as well. Dutch still is older than current English, German or Scandinavian languages ! Phonetically and writing almost still is one on one.
@jpdj2715
10 ай бұрын
@@jsb7975 - "dutch" is a Germanic word that means "folk" or "of the commons". The Dutch "duits", Flemish "diets", and German "deutsch" all used to have that meaning. In the times of the Hanseatic treaty, sailors sailing between the member ports and office ports probably understood each other reasonably well, still, when everyone spoke "dutch" (not e the lower case). Yes, it is easier for us Dutch to understand the rhyme and rhythm of William Shakespeare's original texts than for today's Brits. No not older than Scandinavian languages in general, because Iceland is a Scandinavian language too. I would never make the claim that our language is older than that. My perception is that "dutch" became a word that implied "not nobility" and "not clergy" as amongst those circles (forms of) Romance languages were lingua franca. In the context of the protestant Christian revolution and the independence war with imperialist Spanish terrorists and tax collectors that aspect must have been very important.
Congats on the 5 years!! Time for a celebration! For the 2 of you ;)
Gefeliciteerd met de verlenging van jullie vergunning. Ik wens jullie veel succes en plezier met het leren van Nederlands.

Welcome to Amersfoort, there is a lot to explore here besides the peeing bear. A large part of the medieval city wall still exists including the beautiful koppelpoort. It’s a smaller version of Utrecht, exactly in the middle of the Netherlands. You’ll love it here. On Saturday’s there’s a street market in the city center. Here you can watch St. Joris coming out for the dragon every half hour.😊

And no hate on your discretion about learning Dutch; I have never moved more than a few miles in my life, I'm a very rooted girl, but I can only imagine how much you have coming at you just trying to find your place in a whole different country for two years, it's probably smart to save your energy and wait to do that huge effort of learning a language until you have more perspective for the future. Hi Guys, great video and I did not even know about the polar bear in Amersfoort! About the Dutch language...I can understand it is difficult but there are many words that are similar to English I believe so sooner or later it will sink in. Now as you guys are going to Poland....wait until you hear that language (or read)...almost no similarities. My wife is Polish and yes I have studied Polish and can get myself around and have discussions with family in Poland but both my courses I took I kind off stopped halfway...the grammar? un freaking believable difficult, checked some websites and many language experts agree that this is one of the most difficult languages around. So count your blessings learning Dutch, it'll be okay soon enough ;)
Congratulations on your extension 🎉🎉
Congrats on securing the next five years! Eric, just don't go looking for too much logic when learning Dutch. It will only make the process more painful 😅 I happen to be going to Amersfoort tomorrow. Will definitely check out the bear!
Hi guys welcome for another 5 years,, GREAT. Im born in Rotterdam but lives in Spijkenisse near the maas and i have a good advice while you learning Dutch. Don t break your head about it, many people speaks with an accent so it is hard to learn or speak .When you are in another place you can hear the diffrents. wish you good luck with that, and speak a lot to people thats the best way to learn , the way i learned english is watching TV(with subtitles offcourse) and i worked in a bar when i was young with many english guests where i learn from. But the most important is Try to think in Dutch, listen to the spoken words how they sounds and practish a lot,, Well thats it, have a nice time in Rotterdam, the most beautifull city in the Netherlands

Gdansk is a Dutch city aswell "Dutch traders, both inside and outside of the Hanseatic League, were ferrying the majority of cargo in the Baltic Sea.
