Great video for me. I traveled overseas for work maybe once a year for a couple weeks. Now that I retired, I travel for 2-3 months at a time. I am much more frugal than you and don’t like to hop from one city/country to another but rather have a base for a month or two. Much cheaper Airbnb and get more cultural experience. I usually join FB expat groups before I leave that help with planning and several of them meet weekly while I am there and I like that if I have questions or curiosity about why such and such is happening. Having a base for a month or so, it makes it easier to go on 2-3 day trips from that base. Pack a backpack and the cheap airlines are really cheap. I have stayed 3 months in Costa Rica, 3 months in Buenos Aires (2x), 2 months in Medellin. I usually do these countries in USA winters, so instead of snowbirding in Florida, I go to South America. In the spring and fall, I try and do Europe but always with a base. One of my filters is always washer, plus WiFi, ac, kitchen. I usually only eat out once a day, lunch or dinner. If away from base for a couple days, then lunch and dinner. And I make sure I am close to a gym. I have kept my home, so on fixedish income. Mainly kept home because of health insurance and seeing doctors when travel so much. I love being away from USA so I also pick cities where I don’t have to drive. That is a must for me. I have been 3 months in the south of France, within a stones throw of the sea and traveled all over Europe and NEVER got in a car. Great listening to your experiences and validating mine. Safe travels!

You don’t miss the Mexican food from Southern California? Also, how much are you using trains vs. flying? Trains work really well in Europe, and you can often work on the train more than flying.

Hey Mike! 👋 You are correct, we DO miss that SoCal grub. Tacos, burritos, etc, just not the same anywhere in Europe we've found (but haven't been to Spain yet 🤔). We'll have done ~30 flights by year end and ~10 train trips. The trains are GREAT within a single country, but not so great getting between countries -- for us at least. What can often be a 10-12 hour train trip is a 2-hour flight. While we enjoy train travel, it's also not fun to be cooped up for 10-12 hours 😅.

Had to rewatch as I fell asleep the first time. Not your fault though - I had a 4:30am conference call and then tried to watch this after while back in bed. Big mistake! Appreciate the honest feedback and love how you both are growing and learning on this journey. Your sense of humor and delivery on these videos is awesome. You feel real and authentic while also entertaining. Wishing you the best as your journey continues. Also eagerly awaiting to see you pet a highland cow! 🐮

Yayy so excited to catch up with all your travel videos! I loved hearing you share all of this. Agreed that the feeling of familiarity is soooo comforting. It often takes a few weeks to find your favourite restaurants and other places that make a place feel home. That's why visiting a place for the second time is often a lot more enjoyable for me . That was so sweet when Jason said he loves Caroline more because he's seeing her grow. I recently moved to a new place and have seen a big change in my confidence and personality which is really interesting how that can happen when you are living your best life 🤩. I loved that recommendation about asking baristas for travel ideas... never thought about that they might have the same taste. Gosh I really want that budgeting Notion template 👉👈. Next video: the packing one!

Hiiii Hana! Soooo glad you enjoyed this Q&A, thanks so much for watching and for your amazing comment 💖. Funny enough, we're BACK (as I'm typing this) in a previous destination and you're 100% right -- it's so comfortable, easy, and feels like so much less work 🥵😅. Definitely hear ya on the Notion template and we'll see if we can make that happen in the future!

Very interesting.... I kind of feel you guys have not really relaxed yet. I keep tabs, but lets see how you guys are in 18 months... it feels like I'm watching American tourists who are at a zoo. Dont worry we went through the same process.... lists just go out the window. Best thing was to throw away the laptops.

This was interesting, thanks for sharing! Funny how you’re posting much less during your incredibly Instagramable year. 😄 Have you considered one of those trusted housesitter websites for accommodation?

OMG, you aren't lying Josh! There is SO MUCH CONTENT we could share, but alas, it's just impossible to juggle everything and we don't want to burn ourselves out just to look cool on IG or KZread 🤣🤣. Haven't ever looked into the trusted housesitter sites 🤷‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️.

Concerning tension in US..... it is not your travel experience, Europe is definitely slower. I am European and I lived in the US for almost two years - there is a lot of a difference that I felt even more when I came back to Europe 🙂

Won't turn out to be *quite* that much as we have a bunch of stays with family, etc, but that was the average so far this year. It's absolutely our biggest expense, but the places we stay are the most memorable part of this year for us (we've found). Thankfully, there are MANY options for how anyone wants to travel so our budget might not be the right one for someone else and that's okay because there are plenty of other options 💖.
