Do we have the right to be forgotten? | Michael Douglas | TEDxSouthBank

In recent months, the right to be forgotten on the internet has become a topic of great global debate. Michael Douglas explores whether the right to privacy or the right to freedom of information is more important and whether law could be properly enforced to govern the right to be forgotten.
Not the actor. This Michael Douglas is a young academic and serial high achiever. Michael combines legal chops, a background in ethics and a tenuous sense of humour to be an engaging teacher and researcher in law.

Everyone should have the right to privacy. If you disagree, put all your personal information online and leave the rest of us alone.

This is a terrible talk on so many levels, it doesn't look at the reality of people who have had their lives ruined by search engines seeking profit by their methods of ranking. Remember the "Right to Be Forgotten" also includes inaccurate information. Sure, right to info is crucial - but what if the info is inaccurate, excessive, outdated etc. The rich and powerful have the cash to use the legal system to get rid of unfair info. The ordinary guy can't possibly do that. It's a balance, that's all the RTBF is about, balancing privacy over freedom of info. Sure the internet may push back to violate peoples privacy, but so will the people push back. What is he saying, we should all just give up - and for those of us who have unfair info about us appear at the top of search results, should just accept a lifetime of unemployment. It might be ok for you Michael Douglas with a common name, but some of us have more unusual names.

Privacy is a good 💡 idea. Wth why wouldn't anyone think not? Google shouldn't be the government. Try and find a job never mind forgive. Company's don't forgive they will just hire someone else.. Good for EU for RTBF

A very misleading speech full of specious examples. You cannot describe an idea and give an example which is not within the same scope. It is intellectually wrong.

Wonderful presentation. I'm rather interested in the jurisdictional aspect, EU v. the World... Just another thing, I wonder whether forgive is in our human nature. Some scholars would say that it is an invention and it comes from a particular religious-cultural tradition. It is just a thought.

Everything you do and say is forever now in this digital age. Society can judge you and hate you and criticize you. You can be frozen in your actions with the fear of standing out in any way. If you do stand out in any way people will see that you're crazy and not give you a job or trust you or be willing to marry you or have kids with you or move in with you. You are an outlaw, you are crazy, you are out of line. Now everybody get out of my way cuz I got to go to church and sing about how Jesus says to think the best of your neighbor.
