I have that 45 that has the Grocer Jack refrain , it is "An Excerpt from a Teenage Opera" by Keith West released in 1967

i never stopped buying vinyl records, especially in the 90's and noughties when new issues had to be special ordered and the used record shops were overflowing with Classical records going for 50p, i still have many if them now. in 1983 vinyl technology had gone as far as it could go and political issues caused the degradation of the quality of the records being made, the petrol crisis from the 70's was still having an effect. Along comes CD, much campaigned for by the Classical music lobby obviously due to the quality of sound they were missing with vinyl with surface noise. Most vinyl playback systems in those days were pretty poor, music centres etc., with a new CD player and amps and speakers to go with it CD won hands down though as i had a decent turntable and amps i was very disappointed with the sound in those days, CD has improved since then but with better playback equipment these days vinyl is king again, many of those old records had hidden qualities which are apparent now but not often heard back in the past pre CD.

I find a lot of 80s pressings very good. Especially the DMM.

I have The Solti ring on LP. When CD came out I bought it on CD, then I bought the new improved CD, then they released a super-duper CD version. Not one of the digital versions matches those old LPs for sound stage

There is difference between CD standard and SACD. I've done a number of comparisons and SACD gives a wider soundstage and sounds less...processed and digital. I have a Marantz CD player and I'm very happy with its sound. It's a little warm but it works well for 95% of recordings.

Systemdecks were excellent, i had an Ariston RD80 with a Linn Basik arm in the 80s, nothing under £1000 today could match it. using a LInn Sondek LP12 today.

the little Bush turntable was part of a midi system, Sony made them too, i had one to play singles on. To be honest Regas are not in the same league as Linn and Pink Triangle at all, no comparison. I like listening to old recordings, they have an edge on the strings, brass and timpani, modern recordings are smoother but less noisy.

@@slowpawstevet3676 The Rega is in a much lower price band. I am happy with the quality. I am not going down the endless upgrade road due to diminishing returns.

There are people on a rega f/b group saying the latest RP decks (ie RP8 etc) is better than an LP12. I suppose you can go on forums and argue all day long about this stuff. I don't even have a good cartridge on mine so that will be my upgrade.

Super Audio CD was an opportunity missed by the masses, at 24bit it was much better than 16bit CD for quality sound but never really caught on.

I suppose it is going to be as good as high end streaming

I’m reluctant to watch a 50-minute video on a topic that has been exhaustively litigated, over and over. If this video has something new to say, I’m happy to give it a chance. But my sense is that everyone’s already said everything there is to say, a hundred times over. At the end of the day, we each choose the format we most prefer, or listen to multiple formats. I’m not sure there are many people left whose minds are willing to be changed. I’d be happy to be proven wrong, though.

Cheap record players out there. I bought a Rega planar 2 in '99 and it still works perfectly.
