Do Unicorns Exist? - Jimmy Akin's Mysterious World
Pop culture imagines unicorns as horses with a single horn in their forehead and associates them with cartoons and rainbows and social movements. Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli explore their deep roots in history and long association with the Christian faith and whether there could be real unicorns.

I don’t understand how giraffes are real and unicorns aren’t. I saw a meme a long time ago that said “what’s more believable. A leopard-moose-camel hybrid with a 40 foot neck, or a horse with a horn.”

How about a long prehensile nose 🐽 that can fill up with gallons of water 💦 or lift a giant log 🪵 attached to a two-ton African mammoth 🦣?? There is no way the elephant 🐘 exists, yet there it is.

I believe in Unicorns! Love your program, Jimmy. BTW. Since movin' to your new locale, you are droppin' off the endin's of most words. Readin', writin', seein', etc. I used to work in radio and TV and notice how people speak ... including my own heavy New Jersey accent, which should never be confused with New York! And no, we don't say Joisey! Also, you may remember me from the Catholic Answers Cruises, #1, #2, and #4. I was the one who was seasick on #1, got quarantined in my room on #2, and missed the ship on #4! I don't cruise any longer! LOL

I note that Jimmy's southern accent has become more pronounced since he moved back to Arkansas 😊
The Answer = Rhino + Narwhal + Auroch + some flavor.
My daughter just asked me this two nights ago… I thought it best to tell her what I thought was the truth (as gently as I could). I hope Jimmy proves my answer wrong… 😅
To quote the late Rock Stevens -- popular high school teacher of my youth and my children's -- "It's FRIIIIIIIIIIIIDAAAAAAAYYYY!" He encouraged his students to shout it loud and proud at the start of every Friday class, so the cry would resound through the halls of the school. And these days, I associate it with _Jimmy Akins Mysterious World_ . May the soul of Rock Stevens rest in peace 🕊️
Ooh cliffhanger! What a great episode. My four daughters have all gone through the “unicorn stage.” I can’t wait to share this info and hear the faith and reason next week.
The rhino. At the time that the unicorn was written about in the Torah there was the wooly rhino that had a 5ft sword like horn. The ancient Israelite probably saw it themselves.
Was not expecting a Animalogic-Jimmy Akin crossover today. But I am here for it.
I suspect some stories are actually Rhinoceroses from Roman Legends. However, some Scriptural ideas, like horses that carried Elijah into Heaven, may yet be found to have some spiritual link with a rainbow spectrum throughout all creation. I suspect they are more real than we are willing to admit.

As always! Thanks so much! Keep them coming… and I’m excited to hear more about Hildegard.
Great picture of Mt. Redoubt volcano eruption! I live in view of that volcano, in Alaska, and I remember it erupting when I was a kid! Half the sky (in the Soldotna area) was covered in that ash cloud!😄 So cool to see my favorite childhood landmark in this show!
Happy to hear St Hildegard mentioned.
Excited for the next episode!
My daughters had an argument about Unicorns this week, so I sat down with the KJV Bible and turned to the book of Job. Their little minds were blown. lol
Excellent episode! Never heard of Ocapi until today.
As an animal lover, I'd be seriously enraged being used to kill such a lovely creature. Also, The Last Unicorn has an interesting conversation on why she didn't go to a princess. The princess was just going through motions and her heart wasn't seeking. Unlike, the older cruelly used Molly Gru.
I sometimes wonder why there's no pictures of dinosaurs found on ANY of the ancient cave paintings.

Strong “ yes” from me.
I have a couple of animals in mind. The earlier Roman accounts I think are probably rhinos. They had odd ways of describing animals (just look at their description of a hippo). I can't remember the name of the other animal, but it basically is just a unicorn.

Why was the ankle bone notable to early writers?
Clearly the Indian animals being discussed are the Indian rhinoceros. Perhaps a variant with a longer horn that is no longer existent. But the alicorns of Europe are clearly Narwhal tusks. I am excited to learn that all my thoughts are actually wrong in the next episode though.
Note that the Indus "unicorn" images only have one horn, but also only have one ear. So while the legs are staggered, they still might be "full profile" with respect to the head, and thus never intended to represent a one-horned creature at all. The Okapi might very easily have fooled a lot of people, seen in the deep, variegated shade of their natural habitat, and always fleetingly, it would be very easy to see their oddly-positioned horns as only one horn. As for the 7-foot spiral "alicorns," those are CLEARLY narwhal tusks! However, none of that makes me not believe in real unicorns. :)
What does Jimmy think about the Magdeburg Unicorn?
I’ve been back and forth on the unicorn thing. Totally believe there was/is some creature that could be viewed as a unicorn but not sure exactly how close the resemblance. I just go with the “rhinoceros are fat unicorns” joke normally 😂 Did not know about the big lore Christian lore surrounding unicorns 😮 but as soon as virgins were mentioned I figured it would be a Mary and Jesus reference 😅 Still fascinating. Also, those English dudes and their adventures with the locals tribes sound entertaining! I feel there could be quite a few Mysterious World episodes just on them 😁

I have been noticing that Jimmy leaves the "g" silent in ending with "ing." Like the word "saying." Instead, he pronounces it as "sayin." I don't remember him doing this before. Also, it doesn't seem to fit with his study of languages. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me?

@anglaismoyen Jimmy usually tries to pronounce words correctly as a point. So to hear him speaking in slang is out of character for him. Though I do understand it. I think we all do it in one degree or another. I was raised in a small town in Pa. known as West Conshohocken.(near Valley Forge.) It's an Indian name meaning Mount Pleasant. The town people know it by its slang name, West Conshy. If you grew up on the other side of the bridge, you were from Conshy. Nobody called it East Conshy. I have had people ask me where my accent was from. My point is that no matter where you were raised, we all have an original town slang. Including Jimmy Akin!

Unicorn!

Yes, single horned rhinoceros do exist.
