Here is another tip, if because of the coating on your hardware, and where the hardware is located, the marks rub off frequently: take a light coat of clear nail polish and go over the mark to protect the witness mark.

I wouldn’t recommend the nail polish, nail polish drys to be a hard substance and will very likely leak into and jam up your turrets on your sight. As far as the mounting hardware it would be okay

Why not just mark it with nail polish?

Witness marks. Good for anything, even outside of guns, that requires ensuring that bolts you really don't want coming loose are staying put.

You should do this with any blind mounted bolts on any of your firearms.

I think the more valuable aspect of this is that if your zero does shift for any reason, you know if it's because of the turrets being turned or some other internal malfunction.

i got the gen 2 xl with the holosun 507k, true precision 3,7" threaded barrel with harrington arms compensator and a tlr8 subg laser/flashlight combo. just added the tactical development extended mag grip handle and its just a fucking ridiculously cool build

Yep solid idea ill be doing with my 460 rowland

I do this on my optics. But I found out the hard way that sometimes your optic will lose zero without the elevation or windage adjusting screws moving at all. Turns out the mounting for the LED emitter let loose. And it was on my $600 ACRO after about 1000 rounds! So far, my Holosun SCS has been rock solid for almost 2 years and almost 5,000 rounds.

Simple yet effective. I'm going to start doing this.

I never have either if it loses zero it’s going back to the manufacturer I don’t need a witness mark on my elevation or windage to tell me that

This is the sort of detail that shows a person knows what they are talking about. He means a paint marker . Also,you can use clear nail polish for threadlocker to help prevent backing out of mounting screws ...as well as a way to waterproof ammo. Any ammo if you handload , any factory ammo with a cannelure bullet for a roll crimp and at least the primer on everything.

Right Dupre use to do it on our semis and trailers

Also if your screws do get loosened, lining the markings back will put you very close to the same torque specs that they were set to before. This makes hasty adjustments on the fly really easy.

Good tip. Marking the mounting "shcrewsh" is underrated.

Especially important if you’re too lazy to buy and use a torque driver to tighten your mounting screws to the proper torque settings or to use loctite.

@@briancaine9130 I got the Wheeler Fat Head Torque wrench screwdriver with the 10 bit set for like $40 and it's amazing!!!!

Thats a quik tip, now agood tip is, use a welder and tac everything in place, screw can't loosen if it's welded lol

Smart old school mechanic trick to make sure critical bolts like drain plugs aren’t backing out. Great idea to use them on your dot as well

Blue paint pen is the best. It doesn't distract your eyes as much as that bright white

I do index my optics after they are zeroed, this ensures external screws don't shift without warning...but keep in mind there are mechanical internal components that can also shift. This still helps though...

Add blue screw locker to your mounting screws. I’d agree with your adjustment screws it’s always a good idea to add a dot to keep your optics stay on zero just incase you were to drop your weapon in a shootout. In that situation you’re going to have to adjust on the fly so watch your bullet splash.

You misspelled absolutely stupid.

Loctite tight blue and Torque in-lb driver will solve the screw problem. Marking the elevation and windage could be helpful

Quality optics don’t get knocked off zero but you should know where your dot is zero based on your iron sites. So if your dots off, you will know. Because it’s unlikely your iron sites and Dot are going to be knocked off.

I just usually hit it with a lil red loctite then hit it with a tac weld for good measure. Can't be to secure nowadays.

Zero's shift, due to temp, ammo, muzzle devices and altitude, dont mark your windage and elevation, mark your mounting screws, but confirm your zero often.

Never seen a vid but subscribing just off this one. Super useful tip

Great idea! Yet switching ammo on a AR is a major change! But still close enough! But surprised about the difference between brand. Not bullet weight I stayed the same 55 grain but a big surprise was brand makes a huge difference!

A Pentel Presto paint marker is perfect for this, it's like the actual white paint version of a white-out marker but it has a super fine tip and lasts
