Its so tricky for me in the northeast to figure out when to put pre emergent. I actually got the barricade this year i can't wait to try it.....but the temperatures are so wacky right now up here, this weekend will be almost 70 during the day and 28 at night. I suppose i can start measuring the soil temps this year to get a better idea. Thanks for the video. I've got one question though. This spring will be the 1st time for me to use a pre emergent. Ive got a battery sprayer and I'll be using liquid. My question is, how long should I treat the lawn for? 3, 4, 5 months worth? I'm in Canada and I have Kentucky blue grass. I'm aware that I won't be able to seed any new grass while using the pre emergent. I am assuming I'll have to use enough to cover May, June, July, August, September. Would I be correct to put enough down to cover all 5 months? What should I use with it? RGS, fertilizer and possibly some PGR in the hot summer months? Thanks!
@TheLawnReview
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! I typically do about 4 months worth of protection. I think that’s enough to get me through the heavy germination period of the weeds. Then when you seed in the early fall make sure you put down Tenacity directly on the seed. Then once you’ve cut the new grass in the fall (2 or 3 times) go ahead and put down another dose of pre-emergent for the winter weeds. (At least that’s what I do!) I don’t usually mess with growth regulation. Just a little more technical than I like to go and I don’t mind cutting once or twice a week. I’d encourage you to check out Ryan Knorr’s channel. He’s a fantastic cool season grass resource. I know his company Lawn Supply also sells GR’s that you might be interested in! Thank you for the question though.

I pretty much always use a granular but I have heard some people use Spectracide with good success!
Our lawn had a lot of weeds and clover so I used a Weed and Feed. The grass portion of the lawn now looks great but with the weeds killed or thinned out I've now got essentially bare dirt. How soon can I use grass seed? It's been about 20 days since application.
@TheLawnReview
Жыл бұрын
Hey Rod! Thanks for the question. What type of weed and feed? Like the brand name.
I usually wait on the pre-emergent treatment till April (in central Massachusetts) in order to get protection (mostly from crabgrass) further into the warmer months. I use a “step program” product that offers (an expensive) product that allows for “seeding”. I always seem to need to reseed some of the lawn each year. Winter kill (according to my local landscaper). SO…do you have any guidance, other than what I’ve described, to get/keep my lawn in shape? Thanks for the video. For the most part, it reinforced what I already know to do. Always looking to improve.
@TheLawnReview
Жыл бұрын
Hey Jonathan! Thanks for the question! So a couple questions (I'll try to provide an answer in my question too.) Yeah, lawn care regiments be extremely dependent on where you live. 1. What type of grass are you growing? Unless you're growing a unique turf type I'm assuming you're using a cool-season grass. In which case I (almost) always recommend strictly overfeeding in the fall. In your case early fall if not late summer. You will have a much better take and seed success in the fall and spend a lot less money watering in the late spring/early summer trying to keep that young grass alive. 2. What type of preemergent are you using? If you're up for a bit of a hassle and want to be able to apply seed AND put a preemergent down then you can use a product called Tenacity (liquid herbicide). You need to apply this the exact same time of putting down your seed (or within 1 to 2 days of seeding). It's one of the few pre emergents available on the market that allows you to kill existing weeds, prevent WEED germination AND still allow seed.
@jonathangiven9073

@@TheLawnReview great answer. I use Scott’s 4 products. And I put down their fall fertilizer religiously. Sometimes I miss #3…timing. 🤷🏻♂️. Last year, we had a bad drought. I gave up watering in August. My well water source has limits. By September, I started re-seeding and watering. It worked well enough but I still need more seeding to start this season. I use Jonathan Greene’s brand seed…deep rooting “mostly Sun” version.
@TheLawnReview
Жыл бұрын
So, honestly I think you'd be happier with this product from The Anderson's (linked below). It's a higher quality product than the Scotts in my opinion. I supplement that program with Ironite between application 1 & 2 and again between 2 & 3 for that extra green up. Not 100% necessary. Keeping your lawn fed properly in the summer will actually help it to stay green and "awake" in the summer heat (depending on how hot it gets). But my recommendation to the original question would be to wait, get your weeds under control, then overseed big time in the early fall, cut it twice. Then put preemergent down in late fall to prevent winter weeds. If you're a subscriber I'll be putting out videos all year long walking through the process! Great video and advice. Is it it too late to apply to my lawn now? I’m located in VA. Also, any suggestions how I can fix patchy areas of lawn?
@TheLawnReview
Жыл бұрын
Not at all! It’ll just prevent the weeds from spreading any further. But if you’re dealing with patchy areas that you want to fill in this spring, you cannot put down a preemergent as the preemergent will prevent grass seed germination just like it will weed seed germination. How bad are the patches? Is it possible it possible for you to wait to fill them in until the fall?
All sounds good but the first thing I would tell people is if you are planning on doing any type of seeding of your lawn do not put down a pre-emergent unlessed it has a seed starter with the crab grass control. Most preemergents do not allow you to seed for a couple months after application

However long it takes for your grass to start growing in your yard to the point where it is nice and thick. I usually wait until I am consistently mowing once/week to consider a post-emergent. Posting a video on that one very soon.
Another good first start is to take some samples and send them off to get a soil test so you can see how much nitrogen is in the soil and any toxins that might be present. Normally pretty cheap, 20 bucks, and most can give you a amount of nitrogen to get you going.

There's some sort of a weed that's been growing in this area for years that some hurricane deposited seeds from that pops up literally when it's still cold. I've never seen anything like it. You're right though. I have to apply the pre-emergent in the fall. I haven't been doing that
What if you overseed in the spring?

Could just take the square footage of the yard and subtract the square footage of the house to get square footage of turf.

Andersons Barricade is safe to use around dogs. My dog has been on it for years. Just keep them off it while you’re applying but once you’ve watered it in they’ll be fine

Thank you for the question! Absolutely! Weeds germinate in a progression, not all at once so you might have missed the first group but you’ll catch the later groups and prevent the situation from getting worse

@@TheLawnReview awesome! Thanks new subbie here
Female Fail: do not want this to happen. I would like to take on the responsibility of my own lawn. Weeds piss me off and I am ready to take on the challenge. I have all the battery powered lawn equipment and that works very well for me. I have done my research and liquid applications (Spectracide) is where I am headed and will include Milorganite following the schedule. I love to play in the dirt so I feel very comfortable with lawn work. I want to look after my lawn mower and all the equipment and ask if you could do a video on that without having to take stuff apart on how to clean everything after use and storage for the fall. I have my blades sharpened by a local handyman every fall. Thank you.

Hey Valerie - I would ask that you stay tuned and subscribe to the channel. I just posted part 2 of this schedule last week and will have a third part soon and continue the series throughout the year. If you have any questions - feel free to comment or reach out directly. I am glad to help in any way.
When to over seed ?

Hey Keith! Thanks for the question but it depends on where you are. Where are you located? I typically don't recommend over seeding (cool season grasses) until the fall.

@@kge420 hi, just wanted to add if you’re applying your fertilizer now to wait to add any seed since the fertilizer will kill the seed. I’m in CT and about 4-6 weeks after applying my crabgrass application I overseed and it fills in nicely!! 👌🏼😊

@@kge420 Thank you for the sub!! I'd recommend you hang off on overseeding until the fall, if you can! The preemergent you apply now will prevent your seed from taking well.
