Do THIS before every shoot! | feat. Canon C70
Фильм және анимация
This systematic pre-shoot routine featuring the Canon C70 is a great way to ensure you have all of the camera gear and equipment you'll need for an upcoming shoot. Follow along with the available PDF checklist I used in this video to prep all of your gear (link below)! I demonstrate the way I get ready for an upcoming shoot using my Canon C70 kit, but rest assured you can modify list this to work with your Sony FX6, Panasonic S5II, or any other A/B camera combination you're using!

Nice list, very organized. I have a similar process for prepping for shoots (but I'm guilty of not following it at all times lol).

Thanks Griffin! The “non-negotiable” for me on this list has always been packing in a uniform fashion so I know I’ve got everything at a glance. Sometimes the rest can fall to the wayside when things get busy! Lol I appreciate you commenting! I’ve followed your channel for quite some time and learned a lot along the way, so thank you!

Great video. One thing you might build into your camera prep workflow is black balancing (ABB in the settings). You might already be doing this throughout the shoot, so high-five if you do! For those that aren’t familiar, Canon recommends you auto black-balance at the start of each filming day, and each time you change frame rates (or if temperature fluctuates drastically). Thanks for the great vid! And don’t worry, you are not alone in your meticulous prep and thoughtful packing 😉

Thank you so much Jon! You’re absolutely right and thank you for adding this for everyone! I had one other person (Edmund) ask me about this! I filmed a section on ABB but cut it at the last minute because I was afraid the video was getting too long-winded! Lol I should have left it in! :) Thanks for letting me I’m not alone in that obsession! Haha I’ll let me wife now there are others!
man, it is actually mind boggling that you are sub 1k subscribers! the content you put out is so good man!

One tip for the sensor cleaning, try to blow it out either facing down so the dust falls out, or at least tilted. Facing up can just move the dust around instead.

Solid content, Troy. Agree that being systematic is best for prep. Like the checklist - seems overcautious until you forget something once! +1 on the ABB comments. Shoot a lot of off-frame and it makes a big difference. Sub’d to your channel. Like your style.

Thanks Jonathan! I’ve put a fair amount of effort into it, so I’m pumped to hear that!:) I’m glad you like the card! It’s actually a photograph I took from a deck of cards my grandpa gave to me, so it’s got some sentimentality to it as well. Thanks again for the kind words!!

@@TroyMairs That's great Troy. Little details to describe one's space adds value and shows us more about you. That's great it is a photograph that you took from a deck of cards your grandpa gave you. 💚
Nice, thanks for the list...I'm truly a one man crew so I just needed to add lights. Been doing it for a while don't usually need a list but I'm getting older and the occasional slippage/brain farts started happening more frequently 😒😒

Happy to help! Hopefully this helps a little bit! :) I used to lay in bed the night before a shoot going over my gear in my head before I settled on a systematic approach or a list to prep gear. This definitely helps me get a better nights sleep😂 Thanks for commenting, gad to have you here!
Really helpful list, many thanks!

Could you do a video how do you work with white balance? Do you do it for every scene? Or how do you do it with your C70?
@TroyMairs
Жыл бұрын
I could! Thank you for the question, I’ll idea that to my list! The short answer is that I most often estimate an appropriate WB based on the source I’m using as a key and how I want the camera to interpret that👍
Ones again great content. I'm a happy owner of a C70 too. Maybe you remember a few videos back, when I told you that I'm waiting for my C70. Got it now since a bit over a month. I'm still learning the camera. Also got it a bit rigged for different scenarios. I do have a check list as well. But with you video I was able to add a few missing topics. Keep it up! Greetings from Switzerland.

@@TroyMairs So far the camera is great. But there is still a lot to learn for me. I haven't had a camera with LOG profiles before. This is awesome. So much more potential. Also it's great to see, that Canon continuously provides update for the camera, which makes her gets better and better 🙂

Thank you so much! Everything you would have seen in this video came from MotionVFX. I love their graphics! (Specifically mKeynote and mCinematic) Check them out here: mvfx.co/TroyMairs.
Do an AF test with your 15-35 RF. After the last firmware update, I may be convinced to use an AF lens. Right now I am only using vintage lenses.
@TroyMairs
Жыл бұрын
I just watched your latest video about the Leica lens and thought, “Edmund is on to something with these vintage lenses, I need to explore those more in depth.” There is an Rf to Fd .71x adapter calling my name… That said, I do rely on af quite a bit (more than maybe I should?) but the C70 has never disappointed. I’ll get a video up soon to showcase that. Thanks for the input!
Thanks for the video! Can I ask what is the reference for the SD card case ?
@TroyMairs
Жыл бұрын
Of course! Thanks for asking! Here is a link to the SD card case I use: amzn.to/40UXwGr
you need ONE big peli case... with custom made foam for alle the things you use.. then its easy to not forget anything... if a spot is empty, it because you forgot to pack somthing. :)
@TroyMairs
Жыл бұрын
It’s funny you say that! I just pulled out my Pelican the other day and thought “Man this thing is nice, I should consider using it again.” I do love Pelican cases! I switched to the bag for two reasons: 1.) I’ve been on flights with my Pelican Air carry-on neatly packed with my expensive lenses and camera only to find out the plane I was on was too small for the case. They wanted to check that case and put it in with the cargo… yikes! After much convincing it rode in the cockpit with the pilots😂 2.) The ability to sling the bag on my back frees up my hands which I often use to carry the tripod or roll my Pelican case with lighting equipment (depending) on the job. So that’s why I’ve gone the route I have! But I’m always experimenting with new/better ideas, thank you so much for sharing your insight! :)

@@TroyMairs hehe damn.. okay after that experience i would go with a backpack too :D I was looking into getting a backpack harnes for the pelicases, but it looks cluncy hehe.. but man... pelicases (for the most time) just makes everything easier and makes you relax because you just know the gear is safe from wind, weather and fire :P but thats easy for me to say, i dont fly with my gear. Great videos btw.. especially the one with the Mars monitor.

There is a REAL peace of mind that comes with having gear in those hard cases! (That’s what had me thinking about it again the other day!) It all comes down to how you shoot and what will be the most effective/efficient way to pull off the job! It’s probably different for everyone! Fortunately we have a lot of great solutions to pick from, it’s just a matter of making the decision 😂
With cleaning lenses, isn’t the sorta law of it to not unnecessarily touch the glass for any reason (ofc the rocket blower and brush won’t damage it but using a micro fibre etc every shoot mightn’t be the best?) idk I’m new to this stuff haha
@TroyMairs
Жыл бұрын
Great thought, thanks for asking! I’m sure you’ll find valid arguments for and against the topic, so it’ll ultimately come down to your discretion and how dirty the lens is! I’ve never been too shy about cleaning my lenses and haven’t personally run into any issues, so that’s my insight! If you’d rather, perhaps at the stage in the checklist simply inspect your lenses to make sure they are good to👍 Thanks again for commenting!
Hi! In one video you said that you are selling Ronin... Are you not usinf gimbal at all? Can you please share why?
@TroyMairs
11 ай бұрын
I did sell my gimbal a few months back! For a few reasons, the biggest one probably was that I never wanted to take the time to set it up on sets. Which meant I also didn't want to haul it with me either! Lol I found that with a rigged C70 paired with Stabilized lenses, offered enough support to get acceptable handheld footage straight from the camera. There are times a gimbal is absolutely necessary, and when those times come up I would look to rent one, rather than own.
No headphones?
