Don’t Follow Darren!! Darren Parsons from @terra-crew just finished up his off-roading season in his rad 90s kid Ford Ranger, and he wanted to test if some “regular size” tires could help him get some more horses. This bad dude has a signature sound that starts in the dry sumped LS7 and ends in a sweet dual exhaust, and you get to hear it in 4 different pulls with big and small tires!

Was thinking the same, but luckily the dyno is an elevated roller design, instead of indented, else it'd shred those off-road tires. But as long as the tires make good contact on the dyno roller, it's fine, they just wont get the most accurate reading if a large % of the tire is off the roller.
These videos be coming in clutch for my last 15 min break 💪🏾
Bravo Hert. Good guessing. This truck is a monster, and looks interesting on small tires

A Halloween Treat Good to see you guys Got busy with work Miss'n the Hoonage RIP Ken!
love the graphics on that thing, reminds me of a jeremy mcgrath troy lee designs helmet from the 90s! so sick
Small tires or any size tire you want it gripping the roller, u guys had it on the back side of roller vs from the inside, helps with spinning
I love how the spec list is like a video game but with this truck it reminds me of an N64 game where you could race trucks and trucks only. 90's to the core!
Before watching, it should make more power on smaller wheels. Same torque is delivered to the axle shafts, but the tire diameter change effects the torque to the ground. But the horsepower is a function of torque and rpm, which are inversely proportional so changing the diameter of the tire and wheels won’t change the horsepower in that regard. But the difference in the mass moment of inertia for the wheels and tires will absolutely cause a difference in horsepower Guess I’ll see how I did after the video

I have a 99 tacoma. I threw every bolt-on possible at the 3.4. It was a quick truck. I then went from a 31" tire to a 35. It drained a lot more than 20hp out of it. There's so much extra mass there.
@danielprovencio8669

You have to remember the change on your gearing going from a 31 to a 35 has a big effect.

YES Andre you're right. Don't listen bout gear, that's only the diameter percent difference. It's all the unsprung mass... you're right, it's the extra mass that's located at a higher diameter becomes harder to start and stop... my 2010 tacoma has same thing from 30" to 34"

@Tyler Tenkku ppl can tell me what they think it should be like all day long. Until you've swapped up to a big tire, you just don't know. Go fill your peddle bike tires full of cement and tell me it isn't any harder to get that thing moving. I went from basically a 31x10x17 to a 35x12.5x15. Lotta extra meat there. I have the proper gear ratio for a 35. It was a different truck after that day.
The tires are a lot smaller, basically like changing the rear gear to a higher ratio. The less load now is why it didnt pick up much power. The engine itself probably makes 550 crank on 91.
@thehammerwell
Жыл бұрын
Ya nobody ask what rear gear he had, but its way short, probably 5.00 or deeper!!
@mm6705
Жыл бұрын
its not, because they re calibrate the dyno to the wheel size. it picks up torque simply because of the rolling resistance and weight differences.
Jordans and a durag... Gary say it with ya chest 🤣🤣. Y'all guys have me rolling, I been a hoonie for about 4 years maybe more. Still great content. RIP ken. Where the hell is danger Dan?
The clips from in the edit are 🔥 keep it up guy
To get out of corners quicker, to have a higher top end, whatever the purpose, gearing is always calculated, and tire size is always taken into consideration.
Look at hert smiling like a proud dad, hahaha he is you did great Gary lamo
Did they switch the trans gear they did the pull in for the different ratio caused by the tire size? Does that matter?
@traviscassidy4717

Underrated question
@AdamWest84
Жыл бұрын
While that doesn't really matter, it does effect the total hp numbers. The dyno doesn't care what speed it's spinning at, it just cares how quickly the roller accelerates during the run in relation to how quickly the engine accelerates. That's why you get funky numbers if the tires spin on the rollers. It should use different algorithms based on the different engine rom vs roller rpm.
great to see Thad! miss hearing him on The Smoking Tire podcast
Goddammit, uncle Gary always has me laughing hahaha I'd touch it that way too unc haha
Glad to see Hert back in the mix.
I love that Hert won on one of the "weirdest" cars after losing all those times!
forget the power, that truck sounds badass!
Depends on the gear you want to run or range of race
Fucking sick powerboard dude, it’s giving me video game cut-scene/loading screen vibes 💯
What a bad ass machine!
"The way I wanna touch I don't think he'd appreciate" LOL fucking Gary. Don't ever change.
Hey bro am from Jamaica 🇯🇲 on this is the best video
Torque would be the number that would change quite a bit, you could tell in accelerated much faster also with small tires. Rotational mass was reduced.
Dang, wish I was there. Not only to hear that beast but I also guessed 410 hp with big wheels lol. 480 with smalls, but we won't talk about that...
Brings me back to playing off-road challenge in the arcade.
I said 415 and 470. Soo close . That first small tire pull had me 🤣🤣
Great show
Oh man shout out to the wild Thad putting in work keeping the competition honest.
Darren is the man. Though, I'm amazed that truck is still alive.
Now let’s start seeing BIG power. 1000+
Thad looking good!
The 90's were awesome!
That thing is a beauty
That rear grear fluid has gotta be like frozen maple syrup x10
Gary got the best off the cuff comments ever this man needs his own shirt.
Big papi Hert finally getting his number system down hahaha
More power because less rotating mass right?
The graphics give off 90’s Troy lee vibes, super dope
"I'm running around Japan with Jordans and a Durag on." Never change Gary. I would pay to see a poorly dubbed kung fu movie staring Gary as a Samarai.
Eugene comin in clutch with his guess-timates
Now ya know how it feels to be me! 🤣
Burnt down and built back up 👍
It's the effective gearing. smaller diameter spins faster and takes less effort to spin, yet doesn't put the same load on both the dyno and the drivetrain, due to less mass. Thats why with the smaller tires it revs faster and hits the limiter faster.
@NBSV1
Жыл бұрын
Rotational mass and drag. The gearing change doesn’t really change the dyno reading much. It’d be like doing a run in 2nd compared to 3rd or 4th. Measured power isn’t higher in the lower gears because the change in speed is quick but small. Like going from 20-50 instead of 30-100.
Good to see 90s represented
Wish we could of had the hoonicorn on the Dyno.
Would’ve loved to see donuts n burnouts with the small tires
I guessed 400 and 450. I think it ran out of gear on the little tires. Good guesses Hert!
Hert is like why stand around all day when you can sit in a camping chair & eat snacks😂
This truck was just in a movie Night Train very cool just watched movie today
413 BABY!!!

I was hoping he would do donuts with the little tires
Those small tires were definitely spinning on the rollers.
Love to see Hert.
This is a great start to bring back Scumbag Labs!!!!
What was that graph on the big wheels
smaller OD = Different final drive = Apples to Oranges = Cool video
God Dam. Crank, pistons, cam, exhaust Still doing the stock 505 at the crank🤣
Burple needs to sponsor this truck.
Ahh shit big Darren parsons in the house
More surface area on tires gives you some advantage,
that big tire prediction curve be looking like the FA20 torque curve. Only in shape tho lmao
Is that Thaddeus Brown!? Long time no internet see. Back from dubizzle
Did you change the tire size in the options on the dyno? I’m not sure if you need to input specifics like that or not.
Having the kb4ever43 at the beginning is hard to see still can't believe Ken's gone
This is why you never give up no matter how many times you've lost.
Different kinds of dynos are affected by tire size differently. The truth is it doesn't actually affect power, it just affects acceleration and some dynos infer power from rate of acceleration. Top speed remains the same though unless they have increased drag because actual power is the same.
Here killed it on this one 😅😅

You guys should reach out to DDE if you haven't they just revealed their Huracan build and see if you can organize a This VS That or a dyno episode. I think you guys would like that car particularly.
Without watching everything yet - I'll come back after Gary teaches me - I assumed that the software calculates outer tire diameter as a function of gear ratio?

Also, the smaller wheels would have increased acceleration at the expense of top speed, but in most cases, in most off-road racing scenarios it's not actually about how fast you can go anyway, but rather how _long_ you can go fast for. But my question is this: why is it more about how long you can go fast for rather than outright speed?
Is it smaller or lighter or both?
Why I won't put big tires on my truck yet
