Do self-checkouts accept $2 bills?

Ойын-сауық

Will self-checkout stations allow you to insert a $2 bill? That's what the director of The Two Dollar Bill Documentary aims to find out in this video. He takes several 2 dollar bills and slides the currency into these automated cashiers... at Walmart, Target and even a local supermarket. See what happens!

My wife is from Thailand and she lived in the US with me since 1980. She has always been fascinated by $2 bills because she gets them so rarely. I doubt she has ever spent one but she’s visited back home with a handful to pass out as souvenirs.

One of my favorites is when the cashier pulls out the counterfeit ink pen to check the $2 bill. Really would anyone ever take the time to fake a $2 bill especially when it’s crisp and uncirculated. Sometimes I think they just truly don’t know what it is so they use the ink pen.

  • @TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary

That's exactly it. It's not just that you might be counterfeiting a $2, it's that you might be making up some new currency and trying to pass it off as legit. They use that ink pen like a security blanket.

Same happened to me once, after buying some decks of playing cards from Walmart. In their defense, the texture was a little different due to moisture (possible exposure to strippers), and I was in a smaller isolated town, that once universally stayed at home to watch the fake Hatfield and McCoy tv show on History. We knew that show was fake, because one of the aggressive guys with a shotgun, was in real life a very friendly man we knew, who helped my father find cheap car insurance when money was tight.

Interesting. I would like to have gone to a few more places for this video, but I think watching $2 bills get inserted into machine a dozen times at different places would have ultimately gotten boring (or redundant). Five times in this video seemed like enough.

I have had the $2 work in every supermarket and pharmacy with self checkout I have tried. (I travel weekly all over the country and always try at well over 60 different in the last decade.) I have even had it work in a few vending machines that only said $1 and $5 on the label (though I have seen a few machines that also list the $2 these days). I use a lot of "golden" dollar coins in vending machines also, though they hardly ever take my half dollars. Nice video as always! Keep up the great work.

Been a numismatist for years; my friends call me Mr. Weird Money. Ironically on my last visit to Japan I used a bunch of 2000 yen notes (worth about $20 bucks normally) as they are kind of Japan's version of the $2. One gets similar responses as in the States with twos.

It's a tracking-$1-bill website, but the $2 has also taken off on it, to the point where the creator made a whole forum for people who love the $2 bill. There's even a list called Top Tom's (Google it) ranking who has posted the most $2 bills for tracking. The top two people were interviewed for the film and also appear in that segment.

I accepted the challenge on using $2.00 bills Today on Friday the 13th! 1st place was an automated car wash in Early, TX sadly the worn out mom and pop vending machine HAD rejected the crisp new $2.00 bill several times.. REFUSED!! 2nd Place San Saba,TX Dairy Queen burger place.. Managers enjoying a break.. I ordered a Hunger Buster with cheese, fries and drink combo. $15+ dollars so, I paid $16.00 dollars in $2.00 bills.. (Results were perplexing because the lady, freaked out, and ran to the back office to get a “cash counterfeit marker” then scrutinized every $2.00 bill I used to pay for the meal to go.. She was rather silently-rude, yet all of the $2.00 bills checked out!! There are towns in Western parts of Texas and Central Texas that scrutinized $2.00 bills. I’m ashamed of my fellow Texans, but that’s ok! The only positive experience was a Kwik Kar oil change place in Brownwood, TX where I brought my own oil and filter. $54.00 oil change and I used my $2.00 bills to pay. The oil-tech-clerk was happy to see me pay with $2.00 bills! I surmise 52% is FOR the use of $2.00 bills and 48% AGAINST the use of $2.00 bills.. State Funded facilities and the vending machines assigned, are Against the use of $2.00 bills due to antiquated regulations and equipment.. Sadly after explaining I wanted to video document my experience at the San Saba, TX Dairy Queen, the manager looked at me alarmed and quietly asked me to leave. My 45 years experience with fellow Texans are simply private people and do not want to be recorded. Unless they usually get paid to advertise and share on KZread Channel. State Facilities are not accepting of being recorded as they can use legal action. Privacy Laws? I dunno. I’m not taking the risk.

I put two $2 bills into a Walmart machine at the same time the first time I filmed for this video; it accepted them as one bill. Had I not been crooked filming it, I probably would have included the shot here. But either way, I wasn't going to put multiple bills in the machine at the same time again. Thus, what you see here is me always putting in one bill at a time!

Exactly, yes! I didn't learn my lesson, I guess. Once the machine takes the first one, it's anticlimactic as to what will happen with the others, but at the same time, I'm not going to insert a cluster of $2s and lose them all because the machine thought it was one bill. The viewers just have to watch me do them one at a time in any and all future similar videos. :)

@@TheTwoDollarBillDocumentary probably for good reason 😆. I can totally see myself paying with pennies or dimes even if they did. Least I could do for all the money they steal from me.

This was made for entertainment/education sake, so you really can't draw conclusions about what I do and don't do. :) I do use cash machines, but not always with $2 bills. I like to spend those with actual humans so I get a reaction.

Products that need to be taxed are taxed regardless of how you pay for them.

Taco bell is at it again. Manager of a local store refused my 2! The kid at the drive up window, broke out in tears. After I told her the manager lied and said the bank would NOT accept them! I said that was a lie since I just got them at the bank! What do I do with this manager. I have no issues anywhere else since the smart phones came out.

Sounds like the best thing to do with this guy is just keep your $2s away from his store. Not worth the hassle. One idea though: you can pay with nickels and dimes instead! When he complains about it, tell him, "you wouldn't accept my $2 bills, so I have to pay with my change. It's all I have!"

I just used cash at a Wal-Mart self-checkout for the first time recently & was surprised at how aggressively it took it in when I was trying to center it. The ATM at my bank takes cash deposits much more gently.
