DO'S & DONT'S! Kitchen Backsplash Tile Ideas | Design Lesson 11

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

One of the most difficult choices when you design your kitchen is your choice of backsplash. There are so many kitchen backsplash tile ideas! The kitchen backsplash is a material finish that transitions from countertop along the wall to upper cabinets and should help you in keeping your kitchen clean and practical. But it also provides an aesthetic backdrop for the overall look of your kitchen.
I believe all aspects of your kitchen should work together as a whole and the backsplash is an integral part of that composition. So I'm going to take you through my thoughts on kitchen backsplash ideas and all the do's and don'ts from an Interior Design perspective.

When we were designing our kitchen, we had rich dark cabinets and soft mid-tone green granite countertops (Costa Esmeralda). I found the perfect glass tile to use as the backsplash, with tan, pale aqua, deep blue, soft green. It was the aha moment for me.

Recently found your channel. You present design concepts in a simple and straightforward manner. This channel needs more subscribers !! Got a question about Wardrobes in the bedroom. : Got a ceiling height of 10 feet. In other rooms I have 7 feet wardrobe and then a 3 feet loft both of them have separate doors one over the other. I want a seamless and minimal look. Should I join both the doors to for a 10 feet door which would look elegant and imposing when we open? The other issue would be how to hide the loft space (since stuff there would be unsightly) when this full height door opens?

Great points! Tying everything together is the biggest challenge. I plan to paint cute birdhouses and butterflies on upper cabinets in my 1940 church turned country home. Bases will be forest green. Salvaging the clear fir floors we hope. Any ideas for backsplash that doesn't want to be a focal point??? Inexpensive and easy to clean is also important.

Super helpful video! I have a design dilemma. We’re building a custom home, currently in the rough electric stage. Our kitchen has 12ft. ceilings. Our plans call for very minimal cabinets. I am not a fan of all the dead space above them. Do you have any videos on how to creat a grand 12ft ceiling kitchen, without breaking the bank with double stacked cabinets through out? Thank you!

I'm trying to save the cabinetry in our untouched mid-century since the wood (they are red gum) can no longer be harvested. I'm going with a very light blue gray crackle porcelain tile for the backsplash, which looks amazing and an original Nelson sputnik design wallpaper. I've opted for white appliances and quartz countertops with the Carrera marble look. My issue is translating the broken sliding doors on the bottom to something usable. Would love your thoughts on "translating" old sliding cabinet doors into hinged doors that would keep the character of the home.

Hi! Great video! Thank you! I have light gray painted wood cabinets, white quartz countertops with light gray specs in it, and I want to pick subway tiles for the backsplash on two walls in my kitchen. I want it to be easy to keep clean and fresh. I love glass tiles, but would be ok with something else if recommended. What color tile would work best? Gray? Lighter, darker, or the same shade as the cabinets?? White? Or add a bit of a color I like such as a shade of green? What thoughts can you share we me?

I’m curious what your thoughts are on this situation. My cabinets are an off white mainly because the have a slight glaze on them. The island is cherry. I want to put beveled subway along the backsplash and all the way to a 10 ft ceiling above the stove. We will add a stainless range hood. My question is about color. White tiles make the cabinets look dingy. The cream colors are a tiny bit too cream. I don’t want a color because I’m going for a timeless look. Should I go with the cream even though they aren’t a perfect match? They do go nicely with the granite counters they are a fairly neutral giallo ornamental. I think they are a bit busy, the classic subway with the beveling seems to compliment the them.

Hi there... sorry for the delay in responding. Not sure why I didn't see this until now!? Backsplash tile should go to the end of the countertop and then use a simple tile edge or a finishing tile to square off the area under the cabinets. The key is the backsplash should always be the same length as your countertop. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching. :)

Hello Design Chickee, I have a kitchen backsplash design question. I live in the cutest 576 sq ft condo. It’s got beautiful vaulted wood ceilings and the main room is the only room besides the bathroom & extra closet. My kitchen is 89” across and it’s on one wall. I’m designing it with a farmhouse theme with a few modern aspects. I intend to get white shaker front wood cabinets, black textured granite and a small farmhouse sink. The Big Chill will release an under counter fridge with a freezer and if it’s right I’m going to purchase one in turquoise. I would like to blend all the colors together in the backsplash. So maybe white tile with a touch of turquoise & maybe black grout or some version of this. My question is since the backsplash is not very large is it best to stick with a small tile or a med-large one for the backsplash? I also intend to add a kitchen island that’s white with a butcher block top. An island that’s movable not stationary but not the full length of the kitchen and it will seat two.

I may do a slab but my countertop has a very subtle design and not sure if it will even look that great, may be too minimal and formal, and too $$$$. I probably prefer subway tile but am trying to assess if it's more important for it to match the countertop (leaning that way so it's as seamless as possible) or the cabinets. Also, if the countertop is honed, should the subway tile also be a matte finish or will everything look too flat. Should there instead be a glossy subway tile to give some shine somewhere? Thanks for your thoughts.

I am redoing my kitchen. Our countertops are granite darker brown/blacks. I wanted to change to white cabinets on the uppers and navy on the bottoms and island. Our appliances are black. So now I am really worried that white and blue cabinets with black appliances and a dark counter top will be to busy. We have a pretty large kitchen and redoing the countertops and appliances is out. We are also redoing the tile floors to a much lighter color. I wanted to have a very pretty backsplash, but now think a marble herringbone that is very muted would be a better choice. I really want to make it lighter and more current. Just need your opinion.

Try looking for a mosaic tile with a pattern that you love. There's lots of opportunity for colour and pattern to make it a focal point. Good luck!

Was thinking of back painting glass for a backsplash....to make it extra glossy but not tile. I am looking for a non white kitchen....just for me. Is there a computer program or an app that can let me see what my existing kitchen (a 1955 GE Steel) would be with different colors. Right now it is pink....love it but want a change. I refinished it in 2001 using Rustoleum....has held up well. But can afford to have it done professionally this time.

When the cabinet and countertop end at different points, should the backsplash end at the cabinet or countertop? Also, when the cabinets end at a wall, should the backsplash end at the wall or wrap around the inside corner wall. If so, does that end at the cabinet (12 inches) or go all the way to the countertop?

I dont know how to style my kitchen with a 2.4 metre window and 4.2 metre backsplash. The window sits in the centre of the kitchen wall but is only 2.4 metres long by 0.4 metres high.

Curious about your take of using a MIRROR blacksplash (preferably as a single, large piece and not tiled). I'm considering that option for installation.

My worry for a kitchen backsplash is that mirrors reflect what's in front of them.. so if you have lots of "stuff" on your kitchen counters it may look cluttered or busy or packed of "stuff". If you've got very little on your countertops... then it might be a good solution and easy to clean (though, not so easy to keep clean). Hope this helps!

Hi, how do I design my backsplash without cabinets. I want subway tile with a pop of color. My cabinets are blue pantry style for back wall. My kitchen is L shape and open concept. Hood “36”. Range “36”. Each side is different length , so I cannot do a uniform square. What do you suggest? I am at my wits end😬. Also should I go all the way to the ceiling? Should I go all the way on both sides even though it will not be cemetric on each side?

Thank you for the information. We're installing a new kitchen, at one stage I wanted black cabinets, tops and backsplash tiles so I ordered a shiny black mosaic tile that is in a leaf shape. Since then we've decided we're probably going to sell so most likely a black kitchen might not be in a potential buyer's taste? I'm probably going to paint cabinets in an off white / cream / grey colour with solid wood tops. Would you recommend I just go with a completely different tile / use the black as feature behind stove and black chimney extractor / use the black throughout kitchen. The main kitchen is in an l-shape with sides closed off by fridge one side and large grocery cupboard on other end. On the one hand I'm wondering if I should paint cupboards in a darker grey with the wood tops and black tile? If we only use as feature how would we tie it into another tile especially due to shape?

I have a good question. This is bothering me so much! Our home is being built, we chose the standard backsplash which has the backsplash going up only 6 inches but behind the stove, it goes up all the way. What we want to know is what can we put on each side of the stove that will not look out of place with behind the stove going all the way up to the cabinets. Our countertops and backsplash are granite the color is called blizzard. The cabinets are extra tall and deep gray and the floors will be gray vinyl planks. PLEASE HELP WITH IDEAS. Thank you!

I am in process of having off white distressed paint over my oak cabinets. Also plan to have walnut on the counter tops and island areas. Is that too much walnut or should I just do the island in walnut? (presently all counter tops are laminate). The back splash is where I am struggling to bring cabs & walnut together.

Hi , thank you for the amazing tips . I wanted to know if a stainless steel backsplash would be a good idea for practicality and easy cleaning ?

  • @Designchickee

Hi there... thanks for the compliment! Stainless steel is very durable and can be cleaned but it will get messy pretty fast. If you're the kind of person that needs it to be perfect all the time, I would say no to stainless steel (unless you have an endless supply of stainless steel cleaner)! But if you're ok with a restaurant grade/pro kitchen look, then it's a fine choice. Good luck!

I would suggest using one sheet for behind the oven if want some stainless steel. If get tile kind be crazy cleaning going on. Sometimes less grout is better for backsplash if hate cleaning😂

We are remodeling our kitchen, yet we don't want to have to change out the backsplash because my husband worked so hard to put it in about 8 years ago. I like the look of it but not sure how it's going to look with new cabinets and countertop. Is it still possible to put in new cabinets and countertops and leave the backsplash? It is a light colored brick backsplash

Well nothing is impossible but backsplashes are one of the last things installed in a kitchen. And they are usually installed very tight to countertops and cabinets, etc. So installing new components in and around the backsplash might be a bit of a challenge. I'm not sure I would venture down that path. But if you're equal parts meticulous and lucky... it may just work out?! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! Thanks for watching!
