No need to justify Finland joining NATO. Any reasonable country would do that, seeing what's happening to Ukraine. Russia is an aggressive state, always has been. A lot of countries have learnt it the hard way, including Finland. Still, Finland managed to kick their asses before NATO (with a lot smaller forces, just like Ukraine), so with NATO it will be a lot easier, should the situaation require it.

Tbh they don’t really have any reason to feel threatened I’d not now they are in a more risky spot , let’s say a nuclear war broke out now Finland is a target. Not saying Russia is justified for this war (war is always bad) but Ukraine is not this innocent hero , they have done some shady shit , last time I checked Finland does not have a military battalion that committed crimes specifically against Russian ethnic people , the legendary azov battalion which was an unnecessary reason Ukraine gave to Russia for its invasion. Also this war just revealed a lot of truth about the hypocrisy of many countries they all pretend to side with justice or want justice and yet they join an alliance which has done the same crimes committed by the nation they try to escape and suddenly they forget about the crimes committed by one and join them and still preach about justice. Honestly the only nation who get to talk are countries like Switzerland , india etc. India will always abstain from such thing , Switzerland is not perfect as they went completely blind when one committed crimes and sanctioned for another’s crimes. Atleast they didn’t send any weapons to both.

As a Finn, I will give my own perspective on Russia threat. During the Continuation War, Russian partisans carried out dozens of attacks on villages in the Finnish border region, the only purpose was the destruction of civilians. More than 200 civilians were killed in these attacks, and in the worst individual attacks, villages of 20-30 inhabitants were destroyed along with their inhabitants. Women were raped, of course, and even children were not left alive, the youngest victims were babies a few months old. In the worst cases, victims were locked in their houses and burned there alive, or tortured slowly to death. AND THESE WAR CRIMES WERE NOT RANDOM, BUT THE SYSTEMATIC DESTRUCTION OF THE CIVILIAN POPULATION, WHICH WAS ORDERED DIRECTLY FROM THE TOP COMMAND OF THE RED ARMY. The partisans on the Finnish front were "elite soldiers" who had received hard training, somewhat in the same way as the SS troops of Nazi Germany, and they had been taught to destroy all "fascist Finns" including civilians. After all, Finland got away hell of a lot, because our defense held up. But millions of people in Eastern European countries were not so lucky when the Red Army soldiers arrived there to kill, rape and destroy. In Germany, rape was done in revenge, but also the inhabitants of Poland, Ukraine, the Baltic countries and other countries ""liberated"" by the Russians were terrorized, killed and raped without mercy. Millions of people, entire families and villages were killed, tortured or taken to Siberia if they were found to be "fascists" or otherwise enemies of the Soviet Union/Russia. 20,000 Polish prisoners of war were killed in the Katyn massacre alone. In the East Karelia genocide of the 1930s, up to 30,000 Finns and Karelians who immigrated to the Soviet Union and were considered "enemies of the Soviet people" were killed. When we are talking about the war in Ukraine now, I think it would be right time to wake up and look at history in the right light. Far too many people seem to have the naive idea that only "Putin" or "the current Russian goverment" has somehow messed up. But the truth is that it is about at least decades, if not centuries, old Russian culture and national character, which that nation is now just carrying out just like before. A surprising number of people in 2023 also seem to think that the Soviet Union during the Second World War was still somehow "on the right side of history" and "liberated Europe from the Nazis", and that, for example, Finland's military actions in the follow-up war against the Soviet Union would not have been justified. There must be an end to this sick conception of history. In fact, the Russians of the 1940s were exactly the same occupying bastard and imperialist terrorist state as Russia currently invading Ukraine. Russia is the enemy of Finland and Europe. It is the enemy now, it was the enemy in 1939-1944, and it was just as much the enemy during the Cold War, or in 2010, when our president Tarja Halonen shook Putin's hand. This is why Finland joined NATO. Russia can only blame itself.

The reality is Finland and Sweden never saw the need to join NATO before but the actions of Russia in Ukraine have shown them what happens when you have no alliance to ensure military aid in the event of invasion. Often the statement used was that they were like brothers and there was no need for Russia to invade a brother. Even Zelensky was telling the media he didn't believe the western intelligence reports of an impending invasion and that the reports were only hurting the economy. When it happened most Ukrainians were shocked. Prior to this the Ukrainian people would likely not have concerned themselves with being part of NATO because they didn't see Russia as a direct threat. Would Ukraine have joined the EU or one of the other economic partnerships in Europe? Maybe, it would help them modernize and root out corruption. These are a lot different than NATO. As soon as Putin invaded and the Ukrainian people saw their sovereignty threatened they realized the need for something like NATO when there was a neighbor with a strong military and an expansionist leadership nearby. Finns and Swedes see the same thing. They were content to sit back and say Russia will never invade us because there is no reason for it to do so. Now they have to consider what has happened to Ukraine and make sure that Russia will pay a high price for any attempt to invade them.

@@socket_error1000 it would make sense to make action when there are at least some signs of moves that Russia has an interest in Finland or Sweden. So far there is none and even if Russia would make the next moves Finland is 100% not under the potential threat. You would need years to lay the foundation for threats to appear and that's when it would make sense to go for NATO membership. As for "they could never believe" well most people in Russia as well didn't believe, but believing is one thing, and the ongoing escalation towards Ukraine throughout the year (which was repeated after 2021 similar military build-up). You should focus on such signs, and not on emotional feedback because it will always betray you.

Ukraine has been the one committing mass genocide against the Russian civilian population in Donbas for 8 years… Ukraine has also been the one preparing massive arms at Crimea and Russian mainland despite countless warnings from Putin that there will be serious consequences. The reason why Finland is an added threat to our national security is because #1, They don’t like us for historical reasons and #2 them joining puts NATO right next to us right at the heat of this war conflict in Ukraine and them obviously not supporting us.

And how the Finns have prepared for that one neighbor. Every apartment building has an air raid shelter, as required by law with meticulous building standards. The shelters are designed to withstand shellings and have their own ventilation systems, larger ones are for nuclear attacks and can house the city population. Every apartment building is even required by law to carry iodine capsules in these shelters. The Finnish freeway bridges are designed with easy detonation in mind in case Russians choose to attack. There are relatively few train tracks in the east-west direction of the country so the Russians can't use them for transporting troops. Same applies for larger roads in the vicinity of the border, which run parallel to the border to limit their usability in transporting troops from the eastward direction.

@@turkoositerapsidi it’s chwała not sława. Close enough:) (slawa in Ukrainan means glory which in Polish is chwała, sława in Polish means fame - so not wrong, but a bit strange to wish Poland fame. Or perhaps not, we don’t have that great PR;)

Also when I used dictionary to translate, I did not auto translate whole thing just looked up that what dative word for Poland was in Polish language and I gues how you responded that it was correct grammatically.

i think most people dont understand we fins were not scared, other countries have Armys, Finland is an Army that have a country. NATO tried to get us onboard for 4 years active, Putin made it in 5 minutes, big reasons: 1.They said they cant allow Ukraine join NATO, ah thats the problem, OK now NATO will be your neighbour, no need to fight in Ukraine. 2.A week before special operation started, they said they will not attack Ukraine, so that blow all the trust and respect we had to that goverment specially Putin. 3.Putin said we (Finland) CANT join NATO, wait wooot! hold my beer. 4.Show Putin that actions have consequences, ya know a small tap to head to wake up. I think joining NATO was only way to politically make our opinion clear, i even had small hope, that Putin really dislike it and would retreat from Ukraine if we drop NATO application, i bet it would be lightning fast application drop, worth a shot? yes! Anyways we are part of EU attacking us would wreck EU economy so EU would have really high interest to support us anyway possible in case of attack.

No one requested the Finns and Swedes to join NATO , it’s up to the countries themselves whether they wish to ask to join . Unlike the so-called Russian military alliances where smaller countries are told “join us or we will invade”

The problem is humans cannot handle power for too many years before commencing very poor decision-making. This is why democracies work - they 'FIRE' the leader after a maximum of 2 terms. "There was an election, and you have already served the maximum allowed by law, which is two 4-year terms. So we have a new guy coming in here to lead the country. Get out!" Finland should never have been put in this position to stop being neutral. But if you look anywhere in the world where a single person or group refused to give up power and control, *_VERY BAD THINGS_* happen to the citizens and the country. Stalin, Hitler, Hugo Chavez/Maduro in Venezuela, Fidel Castro in Cuba, the Kim family in North Korea, putin (20+ years!) in russia, and all the kings and queens of old Europe. The People were unable to FIRE those leaders. And much suffering was the result - for the citizens and for neighboring countries. So it's 100% fantastic that NATO is available as a vehicle to insure compliance with the demand for PEACEFUL RELATIONS. But it's sad that some countries do not have "term limits" to eliminate DICTATORS from destroying everything. .
