Do personality tests work? - Merve Emre

Examine how popular personality tests, like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Enneagram, are designed and their inconsistencies.
--
In 1942, a mother-daughter duo named Katherine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers developed a questionnaire that classified people’s personalities into 16 types. Called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, it would go on to become one of the world’s most widely-used personality tests. But do these tests actually reveal truths about personality? Merve Emre examines their design flaws.

The reason why personality tests are unreliable, it because because of confirmation bias, self-serving bias, and overall subjectivity of the questiona that makes even the most honest person answer somewhat incorrectly to what they really are.

I am a practitioner of the MBTI. The official MBTI test is designed to avoid these biases. Unlike what many believe, the results are withheld from you until the practitioner first describes to you the mental preferences and allows you to choose. Then, your results are revealed and compared to your initial hypothesized type. Finally, it is up to you to use both to make the most well-informed decision. Additionally, the MBTI itself has dichotomies which are based on what Jung refers to as "psychological opposites", which do not have any more social desirability than the other. You are not informed on whether a response to a question falls more in line to one side or the other. If facilitated correctly, you should be informed by your practitioner that your results are entirely confidential and you can choose whether or not to reveal it to your superior (which negates any chance of pursuing "desirable" answers which will help lead you into employment), that there are no right or wrong answers, and that you have unlimited time. In order to prevent you from getting a different "type", what happens is that the assessment makes you choose between forced choice answers, to best reflect your temperament over a long period of time. The assessment portion is only reflective of the self-reported portion of the MBTI, and in order to ensure that your questions are most holistic, they also ask you more comprehensive questions that pertain to real life situations rather than commercialized definitions of what extroversion or introversion are. Ethical use of the instrument entails that the assessment is prohibited for use in recruitment (although many companies do admittedly do this), and only in team/ personal development between existing members.

Like it would only show a few of my interests but not all . I never understood why I was trying to seek validation , but I know for a fact that I enjoy doing those things, so much so that I wish to do them all my life , I dont need validation for that kind of thing , especially from a personality test .🙂

The mind is too complex to categorise with language, especially with only 4 traits (MBTI). So the test is good for some and horribly inconsistent for others. For me the test was exceptionally helpful by explaining why I have what I perceive to be bad habits. For one of my friends it always changed as he balanced right in between of several traits. Our mind is too complex to analyse without faults. The test should not be taken as a "set in stone" description of your personality, only as a guide to some prominent features. If you want more accurate analysis use several tests and combine the results to increase the amount of variables tested.

Actually that question is very difficult to answer. There are fierce debates between researchers about this topic. And yes, some would agree with you, that current personality tests are not working.Others would maybe more wisely advise to also look at what does work in personality tests. For example, the lexical approach to personality that resulted in the Big Five was a huge step forward in mapping the landscape of what we currently consider as personality traits. Just throwing this all away seems ill advised to me. Yet the Big Five is not a good test for hiring decisions. Although very problematic, it may still be one of the better tests we have for such decisions. The thing about personality is, that it is not something overt that you can just measure with a stick. It is very difficult to come up with a definition and a procedure to measure what you defined. Not to even mention that such tests need to fulfill a lot of other (in some ways impossible) criteria in certain situations, like gender fairness or measurement invariance across cultures.

Yes! While taking these tests we often have a lot of preconceived notions, we have certain situations we are going through, our moods which are influenced by hormones among other things, our position in life, etc. At least in my case, I've taken the MBTI tests every year for the last 3 years and have gotten different answers each time. Sometimes you feel one thing and the other times something else. There isn't a permanant state of the self.

@@jackieweaver3884 I have taken the MBTI about 8 times over the last 2 years, and got the same result 7/8 times. The thing about MBTI is that the Numbers that it shows you, for example: Introverted - 70/30 - Extraverted People assume that that means that they're 70% introverted and 30% extraverted, but what it actually means is that your chances of being Introverted are 70%, and your chances of being Extraverted are 30%, based on how you answered the questions in the test. You have only 1 personality, ofc there is a Spectrum in each personality, and hormones/ moods effect how you act, and everyone is different, But your Personality Type tells you how your mind works apart from other Personality types. You can use it to predict other peoples behavior if you know their type, not 100% but better than you would without it. Also as a final note, everyone grows and evolves, there is no doubt about that, but you will always prefer to do things a certain way. Iqra Shaikh that’s so interesting. I’ve never gotten a different result once no matter how I was feeling or what the situation was. IMO drastic changes in personality aren’t that common it usually requires quite a dramatic life event. It may be down to differences in objectivity. Even if I’m feeling rlly sad, it doesn’t affect how I answer because I know that state isn’t my default nor is it perpetual so I don’t tend to answer as if it is. It can be pretty hard for ppl to detach tho especially if they go through prolonged episodes of depression for example cos it warps your perception of yourself (or so I’ve found anyway) There may not be a permanent state of self but I’ve found that most ppl have fairly strong proclivities and predispositions but these are of course malleable

Iqra Shaikh Iqra Shaikh for me it wasn’t necessarily depression (I didn’t get diagnosed or anything perhaps it was but idk for sure) but more a perpetual state of sadness and I found in those times it was a lot harder for me to discern the “truth” about myself. Because the my whole identity at the time was ‘sadness’ or ‘depression,’ it clouded my judgment a lot like It’s all I saw even the discernibly good didn’t feel like it so if I answered like that on a personality test it would seem as if I was a rlly different person because I was so hyper focussed on certain aspects- it wasn’t balanced. Part of it may also have also been cos my life didn’t change much in that period it was pretty constant and felt very very long. Out of that state it’s a lot easier for me to answer honestly or as honest as I can make it so the personality type doesn’t change cos I better embrace the full spectrum of life’s emotions and how they appertain to me. That was quite the incoherent ramble but I hope some of it made sense :)

It is such a relief that some hugely important criticisms that are common amongst experts are voiced to the public in such a clear way. If everything people know about our field of research is the MBTI, they rightfully condemn us. If it is a surprise to people, that personality psychologists question the very definition of personality regularly, our communication is in bad shape. That doesn't make personality psychology fruitless or boring. In the contrary, I think that makes matters more interesting.

I definitely agree. mbti especially is one that I've come to learn a good amount about. it's great for self exploration, discovery, or just realizing something about yourself you didn't know before. but they really aren't meant to be boxes, they're meant to explain and provide insight. and there is more to you then your type. so much more. so the second you start generalizing people by types, putting them in suffocating boxes with set in stone labels, and letting this result overule their experience, identity, and individuality, is the second you've misused the MBTI test.

This is why using Jung's psychological types and cognitive functions is my favorite method. It surmises a sort of philosophy of the mind, rather than individual characteristics measured within dichotomies. I tend to disregard the behavioral incorporations of the original model, and use the cognitive aspect and allow for the behavioral part to be determined by individuation. It sounds incredibly lame, and probably is in an objective sense, but I've found it to be a fun and intellectually stimulating hobby :] EDIT: I think the point they had on Jung's characterizations on introversion and extraversion might be a little bit odd. Introversion characterizes subjective focus/preference, and extraversion characterizes objective focus/preference. I hope this is a good way to put it simply, in case any of you ended up being interested or something!

It all comes down to generalization and quantification. As humans, we tend to look at the bigger picture, and we also tend to quantify things that we see as patterns. But the truth is, as cliché as it may sound, everybody is unique and each one has their own personality, their quirks that make them “them” and that is very special. Again, these tests are based on the general assumptions that personality is constant. But even the most violent person can change to be loving and the most loving can change to be violent. Sure, take it for fun but in no way let one test or type define who you are and who you choose to be.

I first took the MBTI test in 2015, and over the years I've taken it around 10+ times and I got ENTP every time My take is, these tests aren't as flawed as most of media makes them to be because well, they're dividing 7.5 billion people in 2, 5, 7 or 16 categories, it should be obvious that even within a category you'll get so much variety that you'll end up questioning it's legibility, but if you think about it, this is as good as it possibly can get. Humans aren't objective, you can't label them at all and it should also be noted that if you live your life strictly by the rules of these tests and change your behaviour as per your given personality then you're just confused so instead of living your life the way a study tells you to, rather just use it to learn about the POSSIBILITIES of what you can do. I use MBTI for memes tbh, they're hilarious. But it doesn't harm to acknowledge that this is far more useful than identifying people as per their zodiac signs or BuzzFeed quizzes.

I wanted to see if I could get a consistent average taking the test at different moods, different times, etc. (esp since as a female, the shift of hormones can swing scores around as well) What I found was that I consistently scored as an INFJ -- with that many repetitions and at all different times, my hypothesis was that I must be INFJ or pretty close to it. And reading the descriptions I definitely recognized ways I thought and was surprised to realized not everyone thought along those lines. BUT the important takeaway that I still repeat to people who get too obsessed on personality tests was: This test does not DEFINE me; it only DESCRIBES me. I am not going to fall into an exact cookie-cutter and some of its strengths/flaws may not be mine, or I may have different ones, or I may be able to rise above or fall below the INFJ expectations. But it does describe me well enough that I can use it to understand myself and my "default" state.

I think to better use the MBTI you need to study its functions instead of taking the test in isolation. The test is not all that bad but when you apply the functions by themselves its a more accurate self assessment in my opinion. You also start to understand that it’s more of a spectrum rather than anything else.

Look into cognitive functions and you'll realize that both types are very different in accordance with the way they process information of the environment. People can't alter between personality types, because an individual's response may change due to certain events altering the way they use their functions, but the functions do not change but develop over time. I mean, you can change your personality on the outside but that's just a way for a person to adapt to certain situations. Look into other personality type systems: they're cool :))

@@user-xc9sz4fc7h Well that's not the conversation here: whether it is pseudoscience or not and which, I agree with you, it definitely is but we should be getting our opinions on this topic anyway, but you would need some elaboration to convince your point. Cognitive functions give a good insight into how people process information, though they may not tell us about how chemicals affect our thinking. It's a rather detailed system that people should do enough research on instead of having a closed mind on the subject :)

I agree , I have always taken these tests to see if i had the "personality " to do what I love , and trust me there are many things , but often times the tests would tell me otherwise . Like it would only show a few of my interests but not all . I never understood why I was trying to seek validation , but I know for a fact that I enjoy doing those things, so much so that I wish to do them all my life , I dont need validation for that kind of thing , especially from a personality test .🙂
